What’s actually annoying is that it isn’t really .28 as pi is an irrational number and cannot be precisely expressed.

All of this was "explained" to me when I was in the 10th grade. I didn't get it. Explanation lacked something. Then it was explained again in College. I memorized something that got me thru. Then it was explained again by a VERY GOOD math treacher in Grad School. I remembered only what I had previously memorized and got thru with no "picture" in my mind to match what I was doing. This, for the first time in 50 years, makes it utterly clear. Thankfully, I no longer use math everyday in my work...but it will be nice to die knowing that one more mystery has been removed. THANK YOU.

I believe there are 360 degs in a circle because the ancients thought, incorrectly, that the earth circled the sun in 360 days. Each degree represented a day's journey around the sun.
@michaelnaisbitt1639
@michaelnaisbitt1639 5 лет назад
David Henderson Yes I have heard this before as to the derivation of 360 degrees to a circle. Versus the length of what they thought was a year 👍
@cityvisual
@cityvisual 5 лет назад
It does not end there. A nautical mile is 1 second of arc. 60 seconds = 1 minute of arc and 60 minutes = 1 degree and 360 degrees is the circle. A good approximation to the circumference of the geodesic shaped earth. With regards to the 360 day year, a nice proposition. This would have occurred before the current civilisation.
@eagle6769
@eagle6769 5 лет назад
Actually, earth tilted in the days of Noah, and since then the days of a month could not be equal anymore. Before that there were 360 days in a year.
@JarrodFrates
@JarrodFrates 5 лет назад
The 360-day year is a long-standing myth; it's not hard to construct something that produces the same shadow or beam every 365 days (plus a few hours), and a lot of major and minor civilizations did just that. Astronomy was fairly well advanced by the ancients (because it tied into astrology and understanding the gods' intentions for us mortals) such that some could predict lunar eclipses at least by 750 BCE and solar eclipses at least by 585 BCE. Instead, several peoples (possibly starting with the Mesopotamians) had a base-60 number system (compared to our current base-10) as it could be easily divided by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, and 12, the latter important because it's the approximate number of lunar months in a year. This made a lot of calculations easy with fine detail but without over-encumbering the math.
@JarrodFrates
@JarrodFrates 5 лет назад
@@eagle6769 The Earth has always tilted. It has a 23.5 degree tilt now. Earth's tilt has nothing to do with the time it takes to go around the sun, which is what defines the length of a year.

My highschool teacher glossed over this and did a really poor job of explaining it so I never really understood it. My current course is dealing with radians so I decided to check out some online content and 3 minutes later I have a far deeper understanding than I ever had after a unit of study in school.
@Stratelier
@Stratelier 5 лет назад
They still missed an important conceptual point: radians are defined as the *ratio* between a circumferential segment and its radius, which is more practical than merely knowing "1 radian ~ 57.2 deg".

A circle has 360 degrees because 360 is a multiple of 12 and thus easier to divide into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and even twelfths. The same reason a day is divided into 24 hours, an hour into 60 minutes and a minute into 60 seconds. All of these are multiples of 12 and share the property of easy fractions. The Sumerians were the first civilization to realize this iirc. It isn't arbitrary.

I'm 54 years old. I am a Science graduate from India. I read these about 36 years ago. Now, I think I understand better than what I understood at that time. Thanks. You are awesome and doing a wonderful service by uploading such videos.

A very convincing explanation regarding radians and degrees. I have been going through various explanations on this topic , never did l come across such a lucid and clear explanation as mentioned here.

This is the way they should teach in all schools in India. That was fantastic demonstration of your understanding of the subject. Thank you and may the good Lord bless you. Joseph
