Excellent video, exactly right on the key characteristics. When domestic DNA is present in a RJF they loose their grey legs, and the roosters crowing picks up the trailing note indicative of the domestic rooster.
Red jungle fowl are originally from western Indonesia, mainly Java island, the people that tame them into consumption fowl thousand years ago and then they become trade commodities as a source of food and then spread to the entire world to form domestic varieties of many breeds. And the "bantam" (miniature chicken) got their names after one of the area in the westernmost part of Java from where this domestic breed originated and were founded. Red junglefowl is the ancestor of all domestic breeds of chicken around the world,
Thanks for the video! I have 2 alleged male junglefowl of my own (not fully grown yet) and I was wondering if they were crossed or not. Great tips! So far my boys do not seem crossed. Although they are not crowing yet, so I have yet to make sure the crow matches up
Not much u can do except give them there own pen , or if you had a very large pen so that they can each have there own space with in it , but you shouldn't keep them with domestic chickens they will inter- breed and then you would have pure birds any more
@@medinafarm931 I’ve got a red jungle crossed rooster now and he’s very calm , I was more worried about the jungle chickens killing him or bad fighting breaking out. I v e seen a few nice pairs at the local swap meet. Whats a fair price to pay for a hen and cockerel?
@carbonEYE007 truly pure Jungle fowl are hard to find, personally I d pay a lot for them if I thought they were truly pure , if they're cheap like under $100 for adult sized bird s I d worry that they are not pure and the seller doesn't t know what he has
Just like dogs are domesticated wolves chickens are domesticated Red Jungle Fowl. So domestic chickens are much closer to wild Red Jungle Fowl than any other “pheasant”. Wild Red Jungle Fowl are Gallus gallus and domestic chickens are Gallus gallus domesticus.

Question : Do you keep yours confined, or do you let them forage freely? My sense is that you keep them confined, since, given how valuable they are, you wouldn’t want to take a chance with predators. Question : Do they set several times a year? If so, how many times? On how many eggs do they set? How many, on average, do they hatch out and raise? Question: How long have you been raising them? Is there quite a demand for them? We had quite a bit of snow yesterday. Hey Larry how's it going , great questions , so I do keep mine confined they have both an indoor and out door pen .they are pretty hard to catch even at night the chick's are even hard to catch so keeping them confined makes easier to catch and sell there offspring I think they can avoid predators much better than chickens but they are not invincible if even you lost a half dozen or so every year one hen can easy produce 20 to 30 chick's a year I d say they sit 2wice a year but if they loose the chick's they would sit again if it's not to cold they usually have anywhere from 2 to 15 chick's I ve been raising these birds for about 10 to 15 years they were very hard to get I had to order them a year in advance day old chick's were just under $20 each !! And there was a minimum order of 15!!!! That first batch of chick's i got were all rooster s except for 1!! So I built up my flock from that hennkver the years , they don't sell super well , most people have never heard of them, mainly Asian s buy them from me, something to remind them of home I think, Family is doing well my neice just had a baby!! We didn't get much snow but we did have a bad ice storm and freezing rain first part n of the week

They will lay on the ground as well if you have a lot of bedding, or you could nail a bucket on the wall and put straw in it.. they probably wouldn't lay till spring now tho
if you raised these, they're not that pure.. you can tell from their tail feather, pure red jungle fowl regardless from anywhere should only have 4 sickles and 2 long sickles tail shpuld be in a fan shape... if you like red jungle fowl, get the laos strain way better . pure red jungle doesn't survive in captivity, plus they will never let you get close to them like that.. i been raising red jungle fowl from laos
How do you breed a specific Jungle Fowl Rooster and a hen -Do you pen them up in breeding cage? Will the hen start laying eggs when penned up with Rooster? What is your method for breeding a pair?
they breed well in a large pen the nest boxes are mounted 4-6ft off the ground. Each hen picks her own nest and she lays egg in it. And eventually sitts on the eggs, if I want to breed a specific pair yes I have a smaller pen just for 2
@user-zt1pq7hq6y sometimes they do but it will not hurt them at all , usually if I go in there and some of chick's have fallen out it take the rest out and put them on the floor
Is it hard to keep red junglefowl from flying away? Being that they are a wild bird and can fly so far and high, I would think they would want to leave.
I have a large pen with mesh netting on the top to keep them from flying away, I have had them get out before they flew into window and broke thru the glass but it was in the middle of winter and about 4 days later there showed up in the laying chicken barn eating breakfast with them lol 😆 😀 I guess the got hungry out there
Hi Medina Farm, I guy is selling so called pure bred jungle fowl. Apparently they lay up to 200 eggs per year from what he says. Im not sure how true that is because from what ive learnt, they are only supposed to lay 15 to 20 a year! I asked him if they were croas bred in anyway, he told me that the guy he bought them from said they were pure. Im not sure how true these claims are. Is there any way I could email you the pictures of these jungle fowl so that you can inspect their physical characteristics to see if there are any signs of cross breeding ?
Do u live in a cool climate? Make sure no there are no drafts getting n in no cracks or broken windows to let cold air in , also bleach your containers if your having a problem with sickness and separate the sick birds so they don't make the others sick

those are zoo stock. They are all hybrid mixed. wild females combs are not even close to a comb it's just 1 or 2 point sometimes not even a point. the male wattles are too big. definitely not rjf those are chickens. look nice though. only pure ones in the United state are Gallus Gallus Murghi subspecies. There are high percentage Gallus Gallus jabouillei in the United states because some were brought here before the banned. Only a very limited amount of Murghi were brought to the united states which is the Richardson gene (indian red jungle fowl). Charly has them but cost an arm and a leg for it and they are super wild just like pheasant. Zoo stock are from Richardson hybrid red jungle fowls mixed so it's all hybrid.
