What are Sacramentals in the Catholic Church? 

This is a fair question but I have personally given up sola scriptura “arguments” because they can be contentious and are not productive. The irony of your statement is that the Division didnt start until the "Reformation". You have the Great Schism between the East and West but Orthodox and Catholics have legitimate claims to being Apostolic. So if anyone started division among the Church it's the protestants. The early church was very much indeed organized and had traditions. Until the mid 300s there was no Bible or organized Canon until the Catholic Church compiled what we know as the Bible today. It's not enough to "Be a follower of Christ" Because to a protestant that literally means just walking around with a Bible with a very vague belief in the man Jesus. Jesus gave us a Church. He didnt give us churches or a bunch of scattered communities. he gave us One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. There's so much I can go on but to answer the crux of your question, you NEED a Church and governing authority to not only interpret scripture and administer the Sacraments but also be a visible sign of unity and holding to fundamental dogmas and doctrines.

The bible consists of the Old Testament and the New Testament. Even the Old Testament shows the many tribes of Israel and their schisms and differences in the era of time known as BC (Before Christ). Jesus walked the earth in early AD (Anno Domini, Latin for year of Our Lord). For the 1st 300 years, Christians were basically an underground sect just telling each other stories passed down from the Apostles. During this 300 years, there was only the Apostles Creed which unified a belief system based on faith passed on by oral tradition. During the 1st 300 years, saying the Apostles Creed was the only way to identify other Christians as it was a death sentence to declare such beliefs to Roman pagans. In addition to these oral traditions were Marian apparitions. The 1st Marian apparition was in Spain while Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was still alive. She appeared to one of the Apostles who was having a hard time spreading the Good News (while she was still somewhere in the Middle East). The true Church that Jesus built was based on his Apostles. The only Scriptures they had were Jewish, so they spread the word with stories and miracles like speaking in tongues. The Church that Jesus built is people of faith, not a building. This Church also has a line of succession of Roman bishops. The 1st bishop of Rome was St Peter. Sometime around 300 AD, the Roman Emperor Constantine acknowledged Catholicism and declared it not only legal but mandatory for Roman citizens. There were always heretics (people who selected to believe only parts of the beliefs of the Apostles). Coptics Christians, etc. Then the Eastern Orthodox, Greek Orthodox. The roots of Christianity is Judaism. The trunk is Catholicism. When Emperor Constantine made it safe for Catholics to come out of hiding, the bishops held the Council of Nicea. During the Nicene Council, the Nicene Creed was written. Also, the New Testament was written. The bible was transcribed by hand, and eventually Old Testament Hebrew, Greek, etc were translated into Latin. The Protestant sects of Christianity ALWAYS skip over explaining the Apostles Creed as Oral Tradition upon which many martyrs died (during the 300 years without a written Scripture.) Protestant sects prefer to just call the martyrs of the first 300 years "early Christians" whereas Catholics know their names and stories via oral tradition. Because Catholics venerate these Saints, they were able to reinforce their faith by venerating their bravery in following the examples of the Apostles. The 1st Protestant sects started with Father Martin Luther who founded the Lutheran Church. After the printing press made the bible easy to mass produce, he had the bible translated from Latin into German. He was a Catholic priest, then he dropped the sacrament of confession and all oral traditions and became a heretic. This is why Lutherans confess their sins "directly to God" instead of to an intermediary priest. Luther dropped confession because he knew he was unworthy of representing Jesus when it came to forgiving sins. However, Luther DID feel like he was worthy to represent Jesus when it came to consecrating the host and wine for the sacrament of communion. He was a devout Marian believer, but could not endorse praying the Hail Mary or to God through Mary as a mediatrix, because he taught "Sola Fide" and "Sola Scriptura". Latin for "only faith" and "only the written word". TLDR: Rather than acknowledge their heresy to Catholicism and the Church that Jesus built upon St Peter the Apostle (Peter is Latin for Rock), and acknowledge papal succession, many Christian sects like to proclaim which parts of the faith they like and which parts they deny by proclaiming their "Protestations". Each sect has some criticism of the dogma, the language, the practices, or the governing body. Jesus founded the Catholic Church. He is King. Most other Christian sects are younger than the printing press and they will proclaim a different founder of their church, like the guy who founded the Church of Latter Day Saints and wrote a 3rd Testament; or Jehovah's Witnesses, who distribute an ongoing monthly publication. The current leader of the Church of England is Queen Elizabeth.
