What Are Social Security Spousal Benefits?

Social Security provides several types of benefits, and not all are tied to your earnings. Spousal benefits are based on your partner's lifetime earnings, designed to bridge income gaps between spouses.
So how do you qualify? If your spouse is already receiving retirement or disability benefits, you've been married for over a year, and you're 62 or older, chances are you're eligible.
The amount you receive depends on your age when filing, typically ranging from 32 to 50 percent of your spouse’s full monthly retirement payment. However, there are a few important things to note.
First, collecting spousal benefits will not affect how much your spouse receives, so do not worry about their payments.
Second, if you are eligible for your own Social Security retirement benefit, you will receive the higher of the two, not both.
Finally, if you are divorced, you could still qualify for spousal benefits under certain conditions, as long as you are 62 or older and the marriage lasted at least 10 years. For further information, visit www.aarp.org/retirement/socia...

pensions allow a survivor benefit, social security should allow the same. Should not matter what your own benefit is.

They call it "Double Dipping" and act like it's a crime of some sort! But they do give you $255 for burial expense! How generous, huh?

It’s definitely something to plan for because when one of you dies, the lower SS payment goes away. That’s a major part and consideration of a married couple’s retirement plan.

I pray that you get to the right person to help you out. You most definitely do NOT need to wait until he dies. The woman in this clip had all the info you need. Must be his first wife for at least 10 years. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been since you’ve been divorced. If his death is a factor, I’m almost positive you should get the social security payments that you should have collected, retroactively. In other words if you were eligible for 20 years, they would owe you the total amount owed to you each month for the entire 20 years. Now if you were not his first wife or you were his first wife, it must be that marriage lasted at least 10 yrs. Not positive of whether he has passed away and you worked and put money into your own social security account if you would be eligible for payment under his social security rather than yours. If you never worked, you would receive social security benefits under his social security account. That’s a fact. I had an aunt that never worked a day in her life and she most definitely received social security payments under her deceased husband’s social security for many years after his passing. Please contact an attorney who is well educated in this area. Praying the right people are out in your path so you can collect all of the years that rightly belonged to you!

Im 3 months short of the 10 year mark. I put my career on hold for that man, so i could care for his 2 children and it has really cut my own benefits way down. We are divorced now. Wish there were exceptions for women like me.😢

I married more than 30 years he had his social securty we divorced my social security was 800 per month I filed for some of his they gave me 79.00 so I had to go back to work and we divorced ten years ago. The money from his investments court said half I never saw a dime in words this works for some but not all

That this is available at all to anyone who is divorced, and anyone who is not. The married person can also collect on their spouse’s social security if they earned more! Even though you paid in according to your income, but you can collect according to your spouse’s income if it was higher! And if you were married for 10 years and got divorced, you can collect on your exes social security! And we wonder why social security is going broke!

@carolinedunphy2763
@carolinedunphy2763 2 дня назад
What is not clear is if your spouse passes away, you will have a choice of taking his social security or your own, whichever is higher. What is not made clear is the fact that you will no longer receive the lesser check.
@tmusa2002
@tmusa2002 2 дня назад
@@carolinedunphy2763 I’m aware of that because I’ve had family deal with that. You are correct, when one dies, only the greater amount is kept, but it’s not always that simple. You can start collecting survivor benefits at 60. And, if the surviving spouse’s benefit is higher, you can switch to that at a later date. My friend is planning to do this (and she cannot remarry until 60). Lots of reasons to talk to a pro about SS!

My wife of 32 years passed away only a year after retiring. This led me to be forced into relocating to a different state. Where did all her benefits go to? Irresponsible politicians giving her hard earned benefit to illegal trespassers that have not contributed a single penny. Shame.

@pbinnj3250

Your wife’s benefits aren’t given away to “trespassers”. Politicians have made social security more complicated than necessary. Those who receive donations from insurance companies created “Advantage” plans that return medical benefits to private companies who can deny you care or medication if they want. Social security itself has certain penalties if you make too much money, even though you paid in that money. Scream at politicians, but trespasser are a different, and real, problem. Don’t confuse them.
