Probably the 2 most important things when buying a used 335I would be to inspect the motor mounts. Honestly I would just replace them with a solid rubber motor mounts and also make sure that you have no oil eaks especially around the oil filter housing. These 2 little issues will save you from busting power steering pulleys and shredding belts with the possibility of getting pieces of belt sucked into your crank. Also if you can afford it when you have to replace plastic parts especially around the engine go for metal solutions will probably run you little more but totally worth it in the long run.

Have my 335 in the shop for bad water pump right now. Like someone else said, cooling fan will run like hell when the pump is toast. It's a bit late then but if you often do short drives you will be able to tell before it overheats at least. Wastegate rattle taken care of by previous owner and fuel pump is changed to handle more bhp. Owned mine for less than six months now and already eating cash for breakfast but so worth it!! Don't be put off if you want one. They drive and sound amazing!

I've owned my n54 for 1 year now, bought it at 105K miles. I knew what I was getting into. since then my water pump and thermostat went, $1200 fix. next was was the valve cover gasket as well as a cracked head, $400 for parts $270 labor. new front shocks, $300 parts $130 labor. 1 blown injector, I think it was about $80 for the part. 1 full tune up and 3 oil changes later and I am at 122K miles. now I've a turbo leak, it's the 2 small vaccum tubes behind the oil filter housing. easy $5 fix I'll do it myself. still, I love the shit out this car

Roberto Taveras damn bruh, I put 64k miles on my KIA in about a year 3 months and all I had to do was buy some fuel injector cleaner $5 for sumn with my fuel system getting heavily pressurized to where I couldn't pump gas and some ecu sensor or evaporative emission valve messing up.....I'm clueless about stuff under the hood but love the hell out of cars

BMW's are commitment cars, you have to really take care of them. But they're fun to drive so that kind of justifies the cost.

Commitment cars? That's a funny way to spell unreliable garbage. Any car that has this many issues isn't a very well designed car in the long run. The fact of the matter is German cars are meant to be disposable. Leased by people with high incomes for 3-5 years and gotten rid of for another new one. That's the cycle of these cars...they aren't meant to be owned for 100k miles or 160,000km. German engineering my ass.

Cody Shepard ... Good to hear a positive comment. I own a 2010 335i M-Sport coupe and have had absolutely NO issues with it whatsoever. It looks great and drives incredibly well. To all of you who enjoy putting down the 335i or BMW in general, sorry to rain on your parade. I drive my car responsibly, take it in for oil changes and brake maintenance. I’ve made NO mods on it because if you do, you’re looking for trouble. If you’ve made mods, you’ve changed the car’s engineering! So suck it up, pay the price and quit complaining. If you bought your BMW used, there’s a good chance the previous owner neglected it and you’re paying the price. By the way, my car has 144,000 km (90,000 mile) and still going strong. I accidentally fell upon this video and couldn’t believe all the negative comments. Satisfied 335i owners aren’t commenting on this video because we’re all too busy driving and enjoying our 335i.

I was going to buy one. Looked at 3 of them locally. One had broken control arm and the steering wheel was wobbling. One had massive oil leaks all over the engine and turbo charger. Last one stalled on me in the middle of the road while I was taking a left at a light. Shit was scary... I owned a bmw 540i 1998 and it was so damn reliable. Sold it at 300,000kms and the new owner loved it also. I ended up buying a 2012 hfp accord love it.. Has 300hp without turbos.

Just had my waterpump go bad last Sunday, crusing along on a nice wee drive and then it flashed limp mode and then three seconds after that flashed the red warning to stop immediately. Got towed home, ordered a new waterpump and thermostat and replaced it myself yesterday. Cost around $470 for OEM pump and thermostat and took (dont laugh at me lol) around 7 hours to do. Could definitely do it alot quicker the second time around but im really hoping i wont have to do that.

the only thing I hate about BMW is that they don't make or engineer their stuff to last.....that's the common theme. I still miss my X3 they drive amazing but damn man when something goes wrong with it it just breaks , like boom I broke no warning nothing that's what I dislike......with my Lexus if something breaks it's progressive so it warns you it doesn't just one day break

Had my 2009 E92 M sport 6 speed manual in Le Mans blue for 6 1/2 years. The best driving car I have ever owned and the longest too, however valve cover gaskets replaced x2, HPFPx2, AC blower, water pump, 6 injectors, I was done. I bailed before I had any wastegate turbo issues. My previous 325ci and 328 E92 were bullet proof zero issues. The 335i I was constantly worried about what would go wrong. Never again

Hey thanks for the video post man! I took one of these for a test drive a few years back and immediately fell in love. However I have heard all the horror stories about BMW's and decided I should just stick with what I know which is Japanese cars. I have to be honest, after hearing your testimony and many others who own this car and other BMW cars it amazes me how bad German engineering is. This kind of stuff would never happen on a Japanese car! What I conclude is the parts are just no good on European cars , they don't hold up. I'm surprised how people continue to buy their cars when they are proven to not be reliable and extremely expensive to fix.

My 135i (N54) never had any pumps going bad on me. Currently 91k miles and I was lucky enough to have my Piston Rod Bearings go bad and make a horrible knocking noises in my engine. My Crankshaft is damaged and maybe the 4th piston. I already took the engine apart and nearly everything will cost me over $2000. It’s really a rare problem to even get on this beast engine. I’m rebuilding the engine back up and hopefully get forged Crankshaft Bearings. And also add upgraded turbos. Idk if my engine died cause of my tunes? Because my engine died 1 week after I took my 135i to Bmw for airbag recall. Just strange.

Wow, this is quite concerning, and very unfortunate. My e30 (1991 318is) that's been in the family since new, was just destroyed by a big rig. My car was in Perfect condition and ran STRONG, even with 239k miles; just put in a new power steering ($1,500), and other than that, hardly ever had ANY mechanical issues. I'm looking at either a 335i sedan (M Package Estoril Blue), or Ford Focus ST, and was leaning toward the 335 until seeing this video. This car sounds like an expensive nightmare! HUGE bummer!

I have owned a 2007 e90 330i for a year and a half and I am deciding whether to go with a 335i or 650i. The V8 will be smoother with it's auto box and more comfortable and have comparable performance with a better sound). The 335i is far more tunable with initially better economy but more likely to suffer problems.

Replace fuel and water pump with third party performance company. If you replace it with Factory parts, you will be wasting money. Also knock or misfires, burning up plugs and coil packs can be resolved with the car being properly tuned if modified.

By the way, my car has 144,000 km (90,000 miles) and still going strong. I accidentally fell upon this video and couldn’t believe all the negative comments. Satisfied 335i owners aren’t commenting on this video because we’re all too busy driving and enjoying our 335i.

Robert Lemire great to hear that your car has been running well! As much as I hate to say it, prepare for repairs. It’s not a matter of what if with the N54 it’s a matter of when. You’re approaching 100,000 miles so expect the water pump and thermostat to fail, high pressure fuel pump if it wasn’t already replaced, multiple engine and oil cooler related gaskets, as well as hoses and plastic parts to begin cracking.

Simply Car Things ... I’m fully aware nothing lasts forever... that’s especially true of all cars. I found your editorial comments and opinions very fair. You know a lot more about the mechanics of a 335i than I do. I gave you a thumb’s up. Your car looks great and you seem to be having fun with it. That’s what really counts. My comment was aimed at the BMW bashers and backyard mechanics who race and trash their cars then blame the car and/or the manufacturer. I just wanted to put in my two cents worth as a happy BMW 335i owner. Peace and love. And keep up the good work.

To Oolien ... Nine months later and still no issues with my 335i. I bought a 435i cabriolet for summer driving but my 335i is my daily driver and winter driver. And still going strong. I just replaced a brake light bulb, changed the oil and will have to replace the battery (it’s the original battery... going on 9 years). I love my 335i... can you tell?

Everything fails on that engine. coils, spark plugs, injectors, valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, oil pan gasket, turbos, water pump, thermostat, evaporator, high pressure fuel pump, starter, fuel pump, thrust arm bushings leak, brakes rotors get warped, vanos solenoids, dmtl pump, rattle from the muffler, coolant reservoir.

Dimitry M Thankfully the previous owner of my car took care of a lot of the issues. I curently need to replace my valve cover gasket. My upper radiator hose cracked, replaced all six spark plugs, did walnut shell blasting. So far thats it 🙏🏼

Simply Car Things If you have never done it and you do it just go really slow so you don't brake anything. It's easy to do if you know the tricks to get enough clearance without removing too much stuff. I'm in north california I'd help you if you live close by.

My k24 acura tsx doesn't need shit at 180k miles. Ls corvette engines are way more reliable than any bmw engines. I'm a BMW tech I see them everyday. I love BMW but they always brake or leak. Unless you fix everything. I forgot to mention the DMTL pump fails too on these cars or the pressure switch for the cars that have NVLD (these cause check engine light).

I bought an '08 335xi in October 2015 with about 90k miles on it for 13k. Since then I've had to: Replace the turbos (wastegate rattle), upgraded to VTT rebuilt turbos, partially covered by 3rd party warranty. New HPFP, covered under BMW warranty. New plugs and coils, was having misfires (recently got an MHD tune, so I will have to replace them again soon). New oil filter housing gasket and currently needs a new valve cover gasket (smells like burning oil, occasionally smoke coming up from under the hood). The shocks/struts are also shot and need to be replaced. Currently at 116k miles and luckily havent had to replace the water pump yet! Would I buy it again if I had the choice? Probably not honestly, just too much to stay on top of for a daily driver.

What is mentioned in this video damn near affects any BM that you can think of. You can upgrade to a much better water pump in comparison to stock or oe and might as well throw under drive pulleys while you're at it.... BMW is cool asF as long as your head gasket doesn't blow on you which can also be prevented.

you forgot to mention on early model n54 ecu mosfet failure will cause you to have random bank or a single misfire that will drive you nuts and make you throw many at your injectors and spark plugs and ignition coils not knowing its a small mosfet in your ecu that failed to send the spark signal to your coilpack/s

@abelucious
@abelucious 7 лет назад
Bad gaskets, fuel pump, cooling system and hoses, misfires, random leaks, I had many of the same problems years ago when I had an E39 540i , I can't believe after all these years BMW hasn't figured out what type of gaskets to use on their extra hot engines. I've owned 3 Accords in my life and drove them into the high 200 thousands km and none of them had an oil leak,. Hondas are no BMWs when it comes to driving but at least get the gaskets right ,
