Great advice. Scotland and Ireland are both on my list of places to go. I have visited Mexico a couple of times (I was a teacher of Spanish language and Mexican culture in my professional life) and found that when I showed genuine interest and knew a little bit of background, people were thrilled to help me learn more. On those trips, the most fun was to use my meager Spanish skills to communicate.

@@stevenwaldrop7853 I was in France in 2015 and ordered a salad ( can't remember the name but it was delicious ! ) and I tried to say the name and completely stumbled on the pronunciation . The waiter realized my embarrassment and when he came back and served it he looked at me and pronounced the name of the salad in an exaggerated perfect manor with a slight grin to show he appreciated the fact I cared about his language . It was the perfect " you tried " . People give back what you dish out .

according to a friend the worst sin while traveling the UK is to mention the wrong football team in the wrong pub.

We rented a car in Edinburgh and then left, drove around the highlands for three days, hardly spoke to anyone, and hiked. Hardly a chance to offend anyone that way 😅

This is a silly one but annoying just on frequency: don't ask where the Castle is if you're in Edinburgh. The Castle is up the hill, castles are always up. If you ask where the Castle is, I know 9/10 people will send you down the Mile to Holyrood.

It's not cultural appropriation, it's cultural appreciation. O and one of the nicest girls I knew back in high school was from Scotland. So iv always thought Scottish people were super nice because of how her and her dad treated everybody.

+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the pointers this vid.* I's still writing a wishlist for acquisitions; as of 20 January 2023, one 13Z 30"W/36"H/22"L five-yard in German Heritage, one 38"C Tweed kilt vest (wool back), one Windsor tie in Carmichael Ancient, and one day _Sporran_ that can take an escutcheon are down. Still searching for a "spread-eagle" spadroon kilt pin (after the Great Seal of the United States of America, the eagle having an inescutcheoned shield with chief blue and fess red/silver paly, olive branch in dexter talon, arrows in sinister talon). The escutcheon for the day _Sporran_ will probably be a one-off in the manner of pan-German heraldry, with a straight chief "Гcꜧmɛꝛꝁɛꝛ" in Sütterlin, Fess inescutcheoned food plate overlaid with knife and fork saltiry, and semicircular base.

Personally, I don't think I've had one person when in touristy areas approach me. If you're wearing a kilt, unless you're in full dress and playing the bagpipes, more than likely they'll already know you're a tourist before you even open your mouth. They don't wear kilts, for the most part, unless there's a wedding going on and they find our fascination with them strange. At least all the ones I've met, do. Don't ask for the bathroom, ask for the toilet. Don't go on about your heritage unless asked. They also don't seem to be too thrilled with outlander discussions, so please refrain unless the topic comes up by them. They are friendly people, but just don't wear any football shirt in to any pub, just safer that way. It can be hard to identify what pubs are sorted toward certain teams from the outside, and once you're in, you're..... As they would say in Scotland... F*****. The Rangers/Celtic feud is unlike anything you've ever seen. So best to refrain. A Scotland rugby shirt is always welcome, however, I have several. A Scotland football shirt might be okay, just steer clear of the clubs. Just my 2 cents.

Sure that wasn't Kilmarnock? They get rough. Nah, Scotland is fan-bloody-tastic. Black pudding, haggis, the whiskey and the cider, the green fields, bonnie lochs, the isolation and beauty of Glencoe, she's a mighty place for one so small. I love it.

@@stephenlyon1358 Look, dinnae get me wrong, I’m a big fan of the Scotch people. I love Lulu, and if Taggart is on, I’ll tape it. I was very tired that night, and I was pissed off I was in Glasgow. Colleagues of mine have since visited it during the day, and they say they’ve had a cracking time. I’m sorry. I was wrong; I see that now.

What if one is already an Ugly American? Should one just stay at home, hiding under our rock? Perhaps one ought wear a Pretty American mask? Maybe the gov't should only issue passports for those who pass a cosmetic evaluation. 😄

Tourists should avoid wearing sports jerseys other than american jerseys in UK and Ireland, because sport is not just sport here.Man U and liverpool and most english teams not really an issue but i would definitely avoid Celtic and rangers in scotland and ireland and Gaelic football and Hurling(GAA) shirts in NI republic fine but not NI.There was an american tourist kicked out of a pub in NI wearing a Dublin GAA shirt which he bought in the republic and for most of the time that would be Ok in the right pub,but we went into a unionist pub and didn't reallise. This will be confusing to outsiders ,but Gaelic(GAA) sports which are unique to ireland are associated with irish nationalism ,whereas unionists want NI to remain in the UK and they not only associate GAA with nationalism but also extreme terrorism which of course a gross generalisation and not really true none the less its a perseption many of them have.
