@Emily Rowell Yoga This was great Emily, many thanks. I'm a 54 year old reasonably fit for my age female, going through the menopause. Recently bereaved, I'm looking to try a type of yoga to help me deal my grief, depression and anxiety. Also need a change of direction in my life. Your brief overview of the different types of yoga has been very useful to me. I'm looking forward to seeing your 'Yoga off the mat' series. Best wishes from Lynzi, peace and love to you.👍🏾❤🌻💚

HATHA YOGA Most forms of yoga in the West can be classified as Hatha Yoga. Hatha simply refers to the practice of physical yoga postures, meaning your Ashtanga, vinyasa, Iyengar and Power Yoga classes are all Hatha Yoga. The word “hatha” can be translated two ways: as “willful” or “forceful,” or the yoga of activity, and as “sun” (ha) and “moon” (tha), the yoga of balance. Hatha practices are designed to align and calm your body, mind, and spirit in preparation for meditation. YOGA JOURNAL

Iyengar embraces yin yoga. As you correct your alignment, you stay, relax into the pose What you however observe is the level of resistance in each pose (level of tightness or stiffness), which reveals your emotional state.

Thank you so much for this! I am very new to yoga, and I just started to notice that there were indeed differences. I love to sit in my poses for awhile, because I have a back injury that I started using yoga to manage. The flows were way too fast for me, and I was getting frustrated with myself. Now that I watched your video I will look for Hatha, Iyengar, and Yin classes. Now, I can focus like I need to, relax, and accept my slower journey with yoga!

Yoga is a journey and it is there to heal you. But unfortunately most people have packaged and branded yoga as a commodity all throughout the world. And the whole point of yoga is dharana - one-pointedness/focus and then meditation/dhyana. So just focus and breathe. Pranayama is super effective more than asanas. Go to a good teacher like mine Paul Dallaghan! He is best of both - asana and pranayama. Or to any good Iyengar teacher who will help you fix your problem! But iyengar style focuses more on asana.

If I may make one recommendation, if you like being in poses for a while, really focus on alignment, flexibility, strength etc - def try Iyengar I had tons of lower back probs and bad posture. Iyengar changes all that and gives you the leanest longest muscles unlike any other form. Cat de Rham is single best Iyengar teacher / type in Iyengar and Cat’s name into RU-vid and you’ll see what I mean

Well you still don't unless you understand the essence. Raja, Jyana, Karma, Bhakti are the paths of yoga and actually the essence of yoga! And then there were just two forms or types of yoga - just hatha and ashtanga. Hatha belongs to the Nath tradition with Matsyendranath being the founder, so to speak and Gorakshanath as his chief disciple. There are other prominent pioneers in the Hatha tradition. The credit for asthanga goes to Maharishi Patanjali. Everything else is marketing and branding from different people! Swami Viveknanda who introduced Raja Yoga to the west, the true essence and then Krishnamacharya with main disciples BKS Iyengar and Pathabhi Jois worked on asana. Swami Kuvalyananda on pranayama mainly and asana too. That is the crux. Personally I find yin makes sense but both Hot Yoga and Power Yoga in my eyes is blasphemy! Especially because yoga empowers everyone and any one who follows any yogic path! :)

Ashtanga is great for beginners :-) Usually as a beginner you'll only learn the sun salutations and maybe a few standing poses in the first class. You'll gradually get more poses and each of them is being adapted to your body and its capabilities. It's pretty common that it takes around a year minimum to learn all the poses of the Primary Series. Led classes where the students are talked through the complete Primary Series are rather suitable for practitioners who have a lot of experience with Ashtanga already. Traditionally we practice in so called "Mysore Style", where everybody practices in his own tempo and to his own extent. That's what makes this style so suitable for people of all "levels".

If I may say, yoga being the union of mind-body-soul. As far I understand the five branches of yoga are Dhyan, Raja, Bhakti, Ha-tha, and Karma yoga. Ha-tha is the umbrella under which Mr. Astanga, Mr. Iyengar Mr. Vinyasa Sri Shivanada, Paramahansa taught their own personal style. It's a 10,000-year-old tradition that until the 60s remained in India and other parts of the East. And was always taught, one yogi, one student, There are thousands of possible asanas because it all depends on each student and where their body is at. After the sixties we now have our western approach...I love ha-tha yoga..I also need to remember; bhakti yoga - devotion, Dhyan yoga - meditation, karma yoga- I have so much work to do on myself and Raja yoga, well I won't be doing that . n..not in this life time anyway

Sri Krisnamacharya was teacher of ashatangas Pattabhi Jois and Iyengars BVK Iyengar. Both were his student at young age and took with them shrishti krama and shakti krama of classical yoga taught by Sri Krisnamacharya. Shrishti krama is for formative young years and shakti is to build strength. They gave own names and exported to America. These schools r based on 2 of the many kramas taught by Krisnamacharya based on individual age and stage and need. Classically all movements r done along breath and minimum stay of 6 breaths as one gets readied towards it. Breath is prepared overtime as per rules of breath flow in accordance with yogasutras...dirgha and sukshama...thats is long and subtle with appropriate pause or hold or bandha. Krisnamacharya tradition recognizes uniqueness of each person, each body and each mind. What it brings to the table is totality of the various branches talked abt here. Bikram doesnt deserve name along with yoga. Sri Krisnamacharya refused to leave India or commercialise yoga. His teachings & mind science of yoga r learned by teachers getting trained by Yogavahini Chennai,Hyderabad. To see and treat yoga just as physical activity is disservice to the depth of understanding and healing it carries for human suffering. To look and understand and teach a student the totality as per him or her, takes an extraordinary training

Hi ,I hope you are doing well. There are only two types of yoga Ashtanga yoga and Hatha yoga. Moreover everyone is teaching different styles of asana classes. Its a misconception of saying Hatha yoga, vinyasa yoga. Everyone should learn to differntiate the styles of asana. I would suggest everyone shoud say Hatha yogaasana session, Vinyasa yogasana session, Ashtanga vinyasa yogasana session, Iyengar yogasana session. There is only different styles of asana classes. not many yoga.

How about ‘Gentle’ Yoga or ‘Ananda’ Yoga? I attended a gentle yoga class and I fell in love. Is this technically restorative yoga?
@EmilyRowellYoga
@EmilyRowellYoga 2 года назад
Great question - 'restorative yoga' usually refers to a completely passive practice. So you would use cushions and blankets to support you in different postures and just rest there with zero effort. The focus then is on resting, healing, restoring. Whereas 'Gentle yoga' usually still has some movement, strengthening, balancing etc so it is still a more active practice even if it is very gentle and slow. Hope that makes sense!

@EmilyRowellYoga 2 года назад
Hi, it's really difficult to say as every body is unique. I would say start with 1 or 2 days a week and see how you feel. If you're also lifting weights it's important to give your body adequate time to rest and recover too so a gentler style of yoga on rest days might be a good idea :) Take your time and see what feels best in your body.
