Friends, Vatican II speaks of "the universal call to holiness." Imagine what would happen if, overnight, every Catholic commenced to live in accordance with this call. What would this look like for the laity?

Bishop Barron, Great reflection. Alas, many lay people prefer to leave struggling for deep holiness to the ordained and consecrated religious sisters and brothers. Too many of us are comfortable with 45 minutes a week for Mass and the occasional fast and easy Sacrament of Reconciliation.

As a Protestant Christian, I had no concept or value for personal chastity inside marriage. Having come into the fullness of faith, I have found it deeply nurturing to approach married sexuality from the point of view of chastity, that our sexual lives are holy and can be rightly ordered around unity and procreation. What a gift!

Thanks so much Bishop Baron. Of course you already know it, but this idea of universal vocation to holiness is already in the message that God wanted Saint Josemaria Escriva to spread back in the 1928. Totally new, as well as old, while it is evangelical. Somehow, it was forgotten in the passing of the history of the church. Second Vatican reclaims it. And yet there is a long way to ride until this great news arrives to all. Thank you!

I like that comment about potential (when talking about sexuality). I've realized that many things in this life are not good or bad in themselves but have potential for both. Nuclear energy, for example, has a lot of potential and can power a city or destroy one. Things with a lot of potential, like sex, can be turned into good or bad things with our free will and choices. That fact makes marvel so much about life and the universe.

Dear Bishop Barron, your words are good, but the Laity also needs examples from courageous leaders. In addition to saying that you wish the Laity did something to be more holy, you should make a video to document to them how you lead your flock to do such things and be more holy. Honestly, the Laity, especially the deeply faithful one, is growing more and more tired of words and wants examples to follow. Jesus didn't just say he was going to die and resurrect. He actually died and resurrect. Examples are more powerful than words.

I always appreciate your insights, Bishop Baron. But as a Protestant, I must admit, this one surprised me. Let me explain. At a time I was suffering from an undiagnosed sarcoma, God gave what I call my morning SOPs (Standard Operating Prayers). Among them is the following: Who is like unto You, O God, Glorious in holiness, fearful in praise, doing wonders? Therefore I offer You the most precious of all my possessions: The next 24 hours that You give to me, I offer back to You. I pray that you sanctify them: The good, the bad, Their sorrows and joys, That through them, I may come to learn You better. Be more open to the leading of Your Holy Spirit, And may find a greater will, knowledge and power To obey You Today than yesterday. My surprise (read shock) is discovering that I was praying to follow Roman Catholic Evangelical Councils!

Inspiration for aspiration, if thar makes sense. With 70% of the population claiming to be Christian, it's astonishing that we as a society are so off the rails. I know it became a cliché, but the WWJD concept is solid. As you so eloquently described, if we stop being in-name-only Christians, we truly would change the world. It's something I take very seriously, sometimes to the point of overthinking things. And it saddens me when I see those close to me acting in unchristian ways while dropping Bible verses. Even in the depths of depression, and even when God seems so far away, I still give it my best shot. And right now He seems very far away from me. I know He's not; that's my failure. It will get better...

Obedience is the tricky one. Obedience to God and obedience to church. If you listen to different Christian pastors/priests you may be instructed in many different ways. Even popes can differ in important ways. In political ways for instance. It would be helpful to go into more detail on obedience to God v obedience to church (pastors, priests, etc.). Bring out the microscope on obedience.

Bishop Barron, I love your videos and I've found them very helpful but one point continues to be a struggle for me: we are unable to live up to the vision God has for us due to the Fall (which none of us directly participated in) and even with Baptism we are not perfectly restored to union with God, that is to say we are still inclined to sin. How then ought we to take responsibility for our sin if it is not possible by our own power to avoid it perfectly? Does taking responsibility mean beating ourselves up over every little mistake (something a lot of the saints seem to have done, sometimes literally) or does it mean something else? Thank you.

To chip in my opinion. As long we wear the flesh, the flesh will demand its satisfaction and that is why we are tempted and sometimes fail. Maybe Read Romans 7 and 8. I took me a while to realize that its not the fall that is the problem, its the getting up. Our redemption on the cross and the unction of the spirit transforms our desire to sin gradually to a desire not to, so that when we fail we get up and keep trying. To be more practical. I find that after a while instead of fighting a desire to watch porn for example, I am finding it harder to allow myself watch it and to the point when it hurts and feels awful to watch it. I am still tempted and sometimes fail but the pull is easier to resist and transformation did not happen over night and you grow on what you feed on. Feed on the word of God and sorround yourself with it and keep asking yourself whose standard am I conforming to when there's a decision to be made. I think we are all a work in progress and hope that helps.

Bishop Barron, I enjoy your commentaries and have used them in the past in RCIA programs. (I was a DRE and Adult Ed Director for 27 years.) My only question on this particular video is why you didn't include homosexuality as wrong in the call to chastity. With the government and schools openly promoting all of these gender issues as mandatory acceptance, our youth are being led down the wrong path and it will now be impossible to reverse. Don't we need to use every opportunity to teach against this corruption of morals?
@nicksibly526
@nicksibly526 2 года назад
Hello Elizabeth. I would say that Bishop Barron's explanation of the life giving (procreation) aspect of sex was enough. It is a desire for life (and the ability to bring it about) that sets the chaste person apart from those who simply desire sexual union.
@elizabethedens8393
@elizabethedens8393 2 года назад
@@nicksibly526 I understand where you are coming from. But the younger population will not understand or believe such things. Most Catholics today use birth control and have small families. Procreation is not a priority. We must teach our adults and children the hard truth without sifting it if we are to counter what they are learning at school, on TV and in social media. Even students at Catholic schools are demanding acceptance of this behavior. Because it implies God made a mistake, it lessons His role as creator of all things and respect for Him. We can't be vague or "woke" because they are bombarded with false information. I see many young parents - Catholic parents who support this whole movement as well. The Church can't afford to be quiet or complacent on this if the goal is bringing people to Christ. True love is wanting everyone to achieve eternal salvation. And remember, we will all be held accountable for what we do and for what we fail to do.
@nicksibly526
@nicksibly526 2 года назад
@@elizabethedens8393 so it's a problem of consensus. I don't think a tick box of sinful behaviours is useful. I would argue that firmly placing sexual behaviour within the confines of God's perfect plan of creation is a better way to get people to assent to Church teaching. We need bold teachers to present God's magnificent plan and the shadows will fade into obscurity.
@elizabethedens8393
@elizabethedens8393 2 года назад
To date, that certainly hasn't worked. People don't even know what sin is anymore. No, it's not effective to merely list them. Explaining why they are wrong and engaging is conversation is a vital component of changing minds.

Proverbs 22:3 “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” Take heed to this truth, or if you reject it as "conspiracy" or "craziness" you will suffer the consequences. "Popery Puseyism Jesuitism" By Luigi Desanctis Page 140: At what, then, do the Jesuits aim? According to them, they only seek the greater glory of God; but if you examine the facts you will find that they aim at universal dominion alone. They have rendered themselves indispensable to the Pope, who, without them, could not exist, because Catholicism is identified with them. They have rendered themselves indispensable to governors and hold revolutions in their hands; and in this way, either under one name or another, it is they who rule the world, who have reduced it to such perversion of ideas, that he can neither be a good citizen nor a good Catholic who is not a Jesuit. Page 139: He who thinks he knows the Jesuits by having read all the books that were written in the past century to unmask them, would be grossly deceived. The Jesuitism of that day was an open war against the Gospel and society; the Jesuitism of the present day is a slow but contagious and deadly disease, which secretly insinuates itself; it is a poison taken under the name of medicine. "History of the Jesuits: their origin, progress, doctrines, and designs" 1854 By Nicolini, G. B. (Giovanni Battista) Page 39: take the Jesuit for what he ought or appears to be, and you commit the greatest of blunders. Draw the character after what the Jesuit seems to be in London, and you will not recognize your portrait in the Jesuit of Rome. The Jesuit is the man of circumstances. Despotic in Spain, constitutional in England, republican in Paraguay, bigot in Rome, idolater in India, he shall assume and act out in his own person, with admirable flexibility, all those different features by which men are usually to be distinguished from each other. He will accompany the gay woman of the world to the theatre, and will share in the excesses of the debauchee. With solemn countenance, he will take his place by the side of the religious man at church, and he will revel in the tavern with the glutton and the sot. He dresses, in all garbs, speaks all languages, knows all customs, is present everywhere though nowhere recognized-and all this, it should seem (O monstrous blasphemy!), for the greater glory of God Page 82: [Jesuit] Father Francis Pelhco... candidly confesses that " the many illustrious friends of the Society, prelates, orators, learned and distinguished men of every description, the supporters of the Society, remain occult, and obliged to be silent.'' "The Jesuits in History" by Hector MacPherson Page 148: Danger lies in the fact that since the Vatican Council the interests of both are identical. Jesuitism is the power behind the Papal throne. “The presence of the Jesuits in any country, Romanist or Protestant,” once remarked Lord Palmerston, “ is likely to breed social disturbance.” So hurtful was the Jesuit Order found to be that, up to 1860, it was expelled no fewer than seventy times from countries which has suffered from its machinations... In spite of Continental warnings, England, in the name of a spurious toleration, has become a Jesuit dumping-ground. Those whom other countries have found from sad experience to be enemies, Britain allows to land on her shores, and to carry on unmolested their work of iniquity. We are carrying toleration to excess, and unless there is a change of policy, this nation will one day pay a heavy penalty. If we wish to escape the penalty, we must come to realize that a system which enslaves the individual, fosters superstition, is at war with patriotism and destroys morality, will, if allowed to flourish unchecked, sooner or later destroy society. "The Jesuits in History" 1914 by Hector MacPherson Page 122: In order to clearness of thought in dealing with this subject, it is well to note the distinction between Roman Catholicism and the Papacy. The former has to do mainly with religion. It rests upon the theological doctrines which Protestants believe to be erroneous. There are Roman Catholics who take their religion but not their politics from the Pope. Had the Roman Catholic Church remained a purely religious organisation like any other sect, the world would have been spared centuries of evil. But in the course of its development the Romish Church, through its Popes, entered the civil sphere and aspired to universal monarchy. "The Vatican Against Europe" 1993 by Edmond Paris Page 308: In the future, as in the past, she (The Catholic Church) will inexorably move towards the end she has set herself, without the slightest thought for the ruins and the catastrophes that her unwearying pursuit might be causing. "The end justifies the means". "No political event or circumstance can be evaluated without the knowledge of the Vatican's part in it. And no significant world situation exists in which the Vatican does not play an important explicit or implicit role. "The Secret History Of The Jesuits" 1975 by Edmond Paris Page 7: The public is practically unaware of the overwhelming responsibility carried by the Vatican and its Jesuits in the start of the two world wars-a situation which may be explained in part by the gigantic finances at the disposition of the Vatican and its Jesuits, giving them power in so many spheres, especially since the last conflict. Page -163-164: But let us see, first, how an especially "authorized" personality, Franco, Knight of the Order of Christ, expressly confirmed the collusion between the Vatican and the nazis. According to "Reforme", this is what the press of the Spanish dictator (Franco) published on the 3rd of May 1945, the day of Hitler's death: ... "I learned much from the Order of the Jesuits", said Hitler... "Until now, there has never been anything more grandiose, on the earth, than the hierarchical organisation of the Catholic Church. I transferred much of this organisation into my own party... I am going to let you in on a secret... I am founding an Order... In my "Burgs" of the Order, we will raise up a youth which will make the world tremble... No, no, friend: come on. That's so simplistic. I've been speaking out against the desecration of our statues and churches for years. And I organized and participated in a defense of Serra statues in both Ventura and Santa Ines out here in California. My point is that the long-term addressing of this matter should be of deep concern to the laity, for they are the main actors in the cultural and political arenas. Vatican II teaches that the clergy instruct and sanctify, but that the laity are charged with the task of making the secular arena holy. And just by the way, I'd be pleased if you stopped listening to the distortions offered by internet provocateurs and attend to what I actually say and write.

@@BishopBarron Bishop Barron, I am a foolish man becoming a orthodox christian in Japan 🇯🇵. I honestly make a frank confess that I do not like your some lectures, attitudes, and silence, however I sincerely would like to ask you significant questions because I understand that you do not tell a lie. Please please give me a response, if it cannot be an answer for everyone. As a Christian who love Saint Peter, although I have doubted the monarchism of Roman Pope is right or not, I beg you. I have watched the memorial site of Serra vandalized by left wing mobs in a video. As well as most of Christians would be sad when Virgin Mary is insulted, what the mobs had done to Serra is cruel, horrible and insane. However, My country is Japan 🇯🇵, and I had been proud of a lot of shrines and temples, golden statues of bhuddha, sacred sites of Shinto, traditional cultures strongly connected to paganism. Saint Ambrose probably advised Theodosius to ban all Roman citizens and slaves from worshipping gods and being engaged in pagan rituals at the temples, then temples became closed or destroyed. This is one of the holy traditions of Catholic and Orthodox, I cannot be ignorant. How should I deal with the freedom of religion that include every religions except dangerous ones that attempt to kill civilians? Freedom of religion does not belong to the holy tradition of Catholic or Orthodox, but the secularism fabricated by French atheist in 18th century. How should I react to the destruction of statues of GODS, sacred sites of animism, festivals in rural area? If it were possible to ban all Japanese citizens from participating in paganism events, should I agree with that? Sometimes the destructions of pagan statues, buildings, holy sites are serious difficulties for a certain people who believe in paganism, but Saint Ambrose would do it for their souls. He never cares about “freedom of religion”. The statue of Serra reminded us of excellent era of Christianity, as well as Japanese bhuddists are impressed when they watch the biggest bhuddha statue at Todai-Ji(東大寺) in Nara. Ideally, I have to destroy the statue by any available ways I can use, not considering about the feelings of Bhuddists of Nara for their souls. Every cultures connected to paganism or bhuddism, all spiritual cultures in Japan except the way of Christ should be banned, forgotten…is this right? If it is possible, I (based on the governmental authority)should ban Japanese citizens from worshipping pagan gods, not considering their free wills. That sounds like disgusting, but according to Holy tradition, these ways are right, aren’t they? I am afraid that you feel bored by reading my silly comment and sorry for your precious time taken by my questions. God’s celebration on you, I wish.

Laity are supposed to be involved in the election of Bishops, as per the patristic method. St. Cyprian was clear that the entire community, including the laity, should be involved in selecting Bishops, and this was the way Bishops were selected in the early Church. Of course this does not mean the laity are at all on the same level with the Bishops - you have an indelible mark on your souls and resemble Christ in that unique and beautiful way - but it does reflect the sort of genuine involvement the laity should have in the Church, and is a counterpoint to the type of "involvement" that in reality involves a watering down of the priesthood in order to make all believers into pseudo-priests.

Why can’t the Latin Mass advocates be obedient to the rulings of the Church and accept restrictions now placed on it in the liturgical life of the Church. In our countries English is the norm or ‘ordinary’ as the Church is calling it. We want unity of worship but they seem to want things their own way.
@jerome8950
@jerome8950 2 года назад
Well, I believe that there is only ONE Sacrifice of the Mass in the church. So the fact that some Catholics desire to celebrate the Tridentine Mass while others desire to celebrate the Novous Ordo Mass (Mass of Paul VI) is NOT a sign of DISUNITY because BOTH liturgies should be seen as visible expressions of the SAME Sacrifice of the Mass. Or is the Mass of Paul VI a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT Mass from the Mass that the church had celebrated for centuries up until Vatican II ? It is not theologically IMPOSSIBLE to have TWO completely different Sacrifice of the Mass in the church because Christ left ONE Eucharistic Sacrifice to His Church, not two. Therefore the continued offering of the Mass in the church according to missal of 1962 (i.e the Latin Mass) in our present day should NOT be seen as a threat to unity or a sign of DISUNITY.
@markmoriarty7760
@markmoriarty7760 2 года назад
@@jerome8950 The disunity that I speak of is not in the liturgical rites of the Mass as they both celebrate the sacrifice of Jesus but from the hard-line TLM advocates who refuse to obey the authoritative teachings of the Catholic Church. For example, check out OnePeterFive or The CatholicThing. It is worth noting that the Church of today is following the tradition of the Council of Trent in wanting one rite of Mass for the Latin Church (as we are called). The Council of Trent formulated the celebration of Mass into one rite as there were many at the time. They commanded that this one rite be held throughout the whole Catholic world (though they had to make a few minor exceptions). So, is the Church of today being any different? No, it isn’t, it is commanding one rite for the celebration of Mass. It is the refusal to follow the authority of the Church that is the cause of disunity. I must point out that I speak from personal experience, my own parish has been decimated by the influx of traditionalists Catholics and the refusal of our parish priest to follow directives of the Bishop on certain parts of the liturgy. A considerable number of long-time parishioners have left. In defence of my parish priests, they are still very good priests, I just wish they would follow the Bishop a bit more obediently.
@TruthSeeker-333
@TruthSeeker-333 2 года назад
@@markmoriarty7760 Sounds like your Church improved. The Pope did not tell anyone to stop attending or wanting the TLM, he restricted its use, there is no disobedience to want it or attend it. Why is the Mass that reaches back to the 4th century now no longer good? What about the eastern Catholics and their equally ancient rites? Are they being divisive? The TLM was codified, not created, by Pius V to put a stop to new rites that were constantly popping up (like the Novus Ordo) and to protect the TLM into eternity. Quo Primum protects it from ever being abrogated which is why Rome cannot cancel it, they can only restrict it. Traditional Catholics are by and large the most obedient to the infallible teachings of the church as well as the first to defend the role of the papacy. The cafeteria Catholics are the ones who discard teachings and authority. Why so much hatred towards fellow Catholics?
@markmoriarty7760
@markmoriarty7760 2 года назад
@@TruthSeeker-333 I have absolutely no hatred towards those who prefer the TLM. I get it. But to presume that the TLM is the authoritative form of the liturgy implies the Catholic Church cannot change and in my belief, improve the celebration of the Liturgy. If you go back to the 4th century for your argument then be aware that Latin was probably the vernacular of its time. It no longer is. I understand the reverence of the TLM but it doesn’t engage most parishioners in the way Vatican II wanted. Pope Francis is seeking unity in the Liturgy he has the right to do so. The TLM is not dogma or doctrine it is a liturgical rite which the Church can change and has done so for centuries. To state that you are obedient to the Church, more so than others is a presumption I wouldn’t make. That being said why can’t you be obedient and humble in accepting what Pope Francis, the Vicar of Christ on earth, has demanded. By disobeying the Pope are you not disobeying Christ?
@TruthSeeker-333
@TruthSeeker-333 2 года назад
@@markmoriarty7760 The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is not about us! This is error most people have. The parts that are for you are in vernacular, the rest of the Mass is for God. In fact every word, gesture (including you following along in the missal and offering your own sacrifice) is a sacrificial offering to God, and the proper form of worship we owe Him - according to the Church fathers. Latin was used in the Roman rite throughout the world, as it spread far and wide and mostly in countries that did not speak it. If you read Gueranger, Bellarmine, or pretty much any pre Vatican 2 work that talks about the Mass you will see that it was centered on the crucifixion and incarnation, the renewal of Christ’s sacrifice and His merits applied as a propitiatory offering to God, in expiation of sin, for us and those in Purgatory. The dogma of Purgatory came out of the Latin Mass. The most sacred part, the cannon, goes back in part to the apostles, and is done in a low tone or whisper - in secret. This symbolism comes from the age of Martyrs when they had Mass in Martyrs tombs, and caves, to protect the Eucharist. There is so much symbolism and history packed into each prayer and gesture that will amaze you, and will change the way you look at the faith. It bothers me that so much of what was built on the blood of Martyrs and saints is treated like a problem now. V2 was a pastoral council, as both Popes expressed, and contains no binding and infallible doctrine. The N.O. is a horrific slaughter of the True Mass, but still valid….usually. Many protestant - man centered - elements were introduced. No Catholic is bound to abandon the form of worship in place 1600 plus years. The TLM can never be abrogated. The Pope cannot force this, he can only express his desire, but like you said it is not doctrinal. We are free to choose the TLM, eastern rites, or the man centered rite. FYI the Church is not something that changes to meet the times. The Church, as all the fathers and doctors state, stands against the world, the natural enemy of external governments, the rock, in an ever changing world trying to destroy it. The Church has developed from its beginning, but always an addition, or more defined truth. The fathers used to embrace what the heathens called us - Hostis Humani Generis “enemies of mankind”

Jesus taught his disciples, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven"... "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its strength, what shall it be salted with? It is no longer of any use but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men. "You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Neither do men light a lamp and put it under a measure, but upon the lamp-stand, so as to give light to all in the house. Even so let your light shine before men, in order that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5 : 3, 13-16) John Chrysostom wrote: as the Apostles and priests are, through the example of their virtue, the salt which seasons the people, so are they, by their doctrine, the light which enlightens the ignorant. They are compared to a city situated on a mountain, because they are founded on Jesus Christ, and cannot remain hidden, even though they might want to, because Jesus Christ himself makes them known before the eyes of all men.

Because of the low expectations of lay people a ton of people told me that due to my striving to live according to the three evangelical goals I'm certainly called to religious life. This caused mayor issues in my relationship with God as I now thought that being very committed to him only brought me further away from my hearts desire: a husband with whom I can do some projects which will be a blessing for society as a whole. As an Atheist, I completely agree with Bishop Barron that if the Catholic Laity actually commenced to live and follow Catholic Teaching then it would be extremely impressive and it would definitely be evidence for Theism/Catholicism that would cause me to investigate the matter (or even take part as part of a Pascalian Wager). However the fact that many Catholids don't follow the Universal call to Holiness should then be seen as evidence against Theism, specifically that the Church, Holy Spirit, and the Sacraments don't move people in the ways that we'd expect.
