Today we're tackling the best cards to put into your Volo, Guide to Monsters EDH deck. Commander is a wild place, it's best to bring your Magic the Gathering A Game! Music: Animal Beast - SefChol • Video
Indeed. Kind of a hodge podge token commander, but there's a ton of "well I drew this busted card so, I guess I win now". I wouldn't say he's easy mode, but holy crap. I would kill him on sight!
Man oh man, keep em coming 👏🏽👏🏽 I came here for the Sefris vid and wound up getting these great recommendations for the Volo deck I want to chef up 💪🏽✌🏽
I should point out that for Apex Devastator, the copy of the spell does not cascade 4 times, since it wasn't cast. It's still a great card for volo, but just in case anyone gets it wrong.
Volo is such a awesome commander. But a couple of things to note from this video: 1) You said in this video that when Keiga, the Tide Star resolves, you'd sacrifice the token and keep the original. Howerver, I would rather instead keep the token and sacrifice the original for the following two reasons. a) When you send the original to the graveyard, you can still cast it from the graveyard later. Granted, simic doesn't have a ton of graveyard recursion. But hey. b) You could use the token creature for "populate" activations later on. These don't have to be the Populate keyword per-say, but rather function similarly. Cards like Second Harvest, Druid's Deliverance or even Full Flowering can make a big impact. 2) Nyxbloom Ancient is a slam dunk for sure. But it does have competition from Roil Elemental.
Those are solid reasons, especially populate. I think reasonably, you can play a handful of duplicate creature types with Volo. I think board wipe is common enough to make two of them being in play a non issue. I could certainly be wrong though
Temur Sabertooth can save spot removal or protect you partially from a board wipe. Also your playing peregrine Drake in this deck so the go infinite as long as you just have 1 volo on the field
There is Auspicious Starrix which is interesting. Basically without any other beasts, you mutate it and it gets doubled on cast, now Starrix 1 enters and you get a permanent from the top. Then Starrix 2 enters and you get 2 permanents from Starrix Nr1 and 2 again from Starrix Nr2 for a total of 5 permanents. Now it won’t be a “cast” so no doubling there but if you’re on budget and the Hydra is too much, well the Starrix isn’t expensive
Clarification if needed: The starrix would both be mutated on the original creature so it’s only ever to juice out some permanents from the top, those of course, being put into play don’t benefit from doubling on cast
also shapeshifter clones in general, (except glasspool mimic because it gives the creature shapeshifter and rogue types, and not moritte either because she has and grants changeling), are a house, because on the stack they'll be shapeshifters, but on the field they're whatever type of the creature you copied, so if you already have one clone out there, the next one you play will still get 2 copies because there "isn't" a shapeshifter on the field already (as long as there's not one in your graveyard, that is, but you can either recur with some green spell/ability, or just target exile it from your graveyard with lantern or something) i smell a very easy biovisionary wincon in the works, even though he's the exact same types as volo 😏
like the list! keep them coming Just since it was not discussed: you will not get double cascade triggers from apex devastator since cascade is a cast trigger and the copy never gets casted.
Ha! Yes yes, ridiculously good. I personally don't typically include cards that are over $100. I started this channel with a budget focus and still want to kind of stick to that. However, since you mention Drake, he's freaking ridiculous in Volo. Play em if you got em!
@@aktirimagic4405 No worries, great vido man! Ooh ja because 1/3th of volo players are putting guardian project, a friendly shout-out. Guardian project does not work with volo! you will get the token first which will not trigger volo and then when the original comes into play, you already have something with the same name
Cascade finds a non land spell and you may cast it without paying its mana cost. Volo says whe you cast a creature with a different creature type. Volo would make copies of creatures cast off the cascade casted creatures.
@@aktirimagic4405 I mean cascade is a cast trigger you will get it from your devastator but not the cascade from the token. Cause the token was not cast.
You are wrong with Nixbloom Acient. It only produces 3 mana because it is a replacement effect. Plus I'm not really sure about the token "touching the graveyard". If a token dies it is removed from play....
Hmm...I believe that even WOTC has confirmed that Nyxbloom Ancient stacks. The ruling is on their website. gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=476441#:~:text=Nyxbloom%20Ancient%20doesn't%20produce%20any%20mana%20itself.&text=The%20effects%20of%20multiple%20Nyxbloom,amount%20and%20type%20of%20mana.
Similarly, tokens do go to graveyards. They disappear as state based actions when the player receives priority again. magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/saturday-school-2-2002-11-02#:~:text=A%3A%20Tokens%20go%20to%20the,Aerie%2C%20before%20they%20are%20removed.
Any source that makes mana will definitely make 9 with 2 copies. If you use spark double on volo then cast nyxbloom to make 3 copies I believe you make 27 mana.
Do you mean Elemental Bond? I do agree that it's excellent. I think being the stubborn person I am sometimes, I'd run both to ensure I had card draw. Both being in play would be just be pure gasoline!
@@aktirimagic4405 Yes, elemental bond. I can see the use for both, but in volo I feel kiora falls short where in other simic decks kiora has far more utility. Anyways, still a good recommendation and a good vid.
Thank you for clarifying the Apex trigger. You're right, you'll only get the cascade triggers from the first Apex Predator...but each creature spell that gets cast off the cascade will create new copys with Volo. And according to Wizards, two Nyxbloom Ancients causes a mana source to tap for 9 times as much mana. 1 forest will tap for 9 green. 1 sol ring will tap for 18 colorless. Here's the ruling. gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=nyxbloom%20ancient
