What are the most overrated pinball machines of all time? | Is Addams family really that good? 

As someone who loves Medieval Madness and would love to own one one day I'm more than happy for everyone to hate on it to hopefully drive the price down 😂

Here’s the thing about Iron Maiden, it’s a music pin. So refer back to what you stated in the beginning of your video regarding music pins. Don’t take the following as me trying to convince you to like it, just en explanation from a fan of the band. The theme represents various albums from a band whose career has spanned almost 50 years now. In that time they’ve released multiple albums with different themes which were incorporated into one game. Additionally, Eddie is the band’s mascot and appears on the cover of every Iron Maiden album. So for a fan it’s a lot of fun. If you’re not a fan, which, based on your comments, you obviously are not. I can see why people find it mediocre. I personally can say the same regarding Rush, Elton John, and a couple other music pins, which I find absolutely dreadful because of the music. The best part of every Beatles song is when it’s over!! God forbid they ever make a U2 pin.

LoL. Eddie is the mascot, and IM have used many ‘themes’ over the years for albums and tours. The pro without the ball lock is better IMHO. Spell ‘Eddie’ and play modes - simples! Each to their own though! JP and MM def over rated I reckon. TZ and AF I walked past when both were on free play 😂 For your next video - under rated - Stranger Things! Got one in Nov - like AFM but with a good theme and good synth music 😎💣

Walking dead is my insanely overrated.

It's interesting I find Attack on Mars the more boring pin and much prefer Medieval Madness. I find the jumping aliens ridiculous and tacky and prefer the Medievall theme and its hilarious callouts. So it is to each his or her own whatever floats your boat!! Is it a North America into MM while Europe is more into AOM.

Adam's Family.... I really don't understand why people think it's such great game.

I think lot of the sega games are underrated. I really really enjoyed batman forever. It has a nice ruleset. Lots of shots and for a widebody it has a nice flow. And a bat wing that shoots the ball across the playfield.

TRON is over rated. Played it many times and think the play field is too open with limited toys.

For me… Jurassic Park. It’s ranked number 2 all time and I just don’t love it.

I honestly think Godzilla is also overrated.. It's good but not the holy grail everyone makes it out to be (to me).

It' very funny how we think about pinnball. I have rented about 10 maschines. First was x-men. My love when straight away. I tried a second one. Scarred Stiff. I really really liked it. Had it for a year. You say its easy. You had almost scared stiff the first time. But almost is easy 😅. Lord of the rings ! I asked to take it back within a week :(. I hated it. I hated the call outs. I hated the playfield i'm sorry😊.

Addams Family is to pinball what Mario 64 is to 3D platforming. Revolutionary for the time and set the benchmark for everything that came after it, but has been long outdone since. But that by no means makes it a “bad game” by today’s standards, nor does it invalidate its role in history.

I agree with EVERY overrated machine suggested...except STTNG & LoTR (of course). Maiden stinks for all the reasons you mention. TAF/TZ/TPhantom -- all the same, dislike all of them. TNA is one of the most boring games ever created. Stern Jurassic Park is worse than the original. Other overrated games I'd add: Avengers/Dead Pool/Godzilla -- childish themes, complex, grindy/very poor flow.

Fish Tales: Not a terrible game really, just gets way too much praise that isn’t really deserving of it. Also, way too difficult than it needs to be. TNA: No comment. Everything that has been said about the game still rings true. Beatles: Ripping off Seawitch almost 100% absolutely disappointed me. No original playfield immediately disqualifies is from being good. Same goes for PBR, Woah Nellie and Primus. Bond: I understand the code is there now, but that’s one of the worst playfields in pinball history. Code can’t alter the playfield. I could go on, but those are just a few off the top of my head that piss me off. 😂

Godzilla for most overrated!!

Indiana Jones, it is a mediocre fan layout. The great theme (IJ) and fun path-of-adventure toy carry it way too much, considering the praise it gets. Any other B/W around that price-range is, gameplay wise, way better. Heck, most B/W titles that costs less than half of an IJ are more fun (NF, WCS94).

Love TOTAN, Love Cirquis Volatair. LOVE TNA. Addams is over rated for sure. Its fun but not the best. My top favorite underrated pin is Pin-Bot. Cactus Canyon is way over rated.

Huh...Iron Maiden is one of my top five...and my top five isn't in any particular order. I like my top five all equally.

I have to go with Ghostbusters, difficult is different from poorly made. Walking Dead is difficult, Iron Maiden is difficult, Jurassic Park is difficult, but you can learn and master them. Ghostbusters though, you can try but you’ll just get drained thanks to every shot being a danger shot

Adam's Family "NOW YOU'VE DONE IT..." is a kino multiball sequence.

Stern's Jurassic Park is COLOSSALLY overrated in my opinion. The playfield and shots aren't fun and the balance of scoring is ASS. What are people smoking to call that game the #2 game on the Pinside Top 100!? I understand how you can't get into Iron Maiden, even if I love it personally.

I own an Iron Maiden Pro pinball machine. And I love the band, and their music. But I agree with you 100%. It's extremely overrated. I've played it hundreds of times, and it's just not a good pinball machine. There's just way too much horizontal movement of the ball because of the way it's designed. It's completely inconsistent in the way it plays. You can be great at it, and you will still have the occasional shit game on it because of a wild bounce that sends the ball down the out lane, regardless of how good at nudging you are. I think people just overate it because it's Keith Elwin's first table design. His other designs however, are much better. Take Godzilla for example, it's a much better machine.

Adams is a reasonable game but it HAS personality and humour, which goes a long way in my book. It is a little overrated, but there are thousands out there that don’t change hands very often, so it must be popular? Something makes people keep them. Kris has already chosen Iron Maiden. I have to throw that one out of my list because he has already chosen it, which means I don’t have to (thank’s Kris, Iron Maiden is a stinker!) Twighlight Zone is an OK game. It delivers what you would expect. Same goes for Medieval Madness. I am going to limit myself to something in the top 20… Avengers Infinity Quest is my choice. Never a more tedious combination of plywood, plastic, copper and steel has ever been praised so highly. 😁

Appreciate you don't like Maiden and that's absolutely fair enough, if we all liked the same things, what a boring turd the world would be. But, going by your own metrics of what makes a pinball good or not, I think you're wrong for the following reasons; 1) Is it approachable - Hell yeah, you know it's an Iron Maiden pinball so it's gonna be a rock pin, with rock music and theme and if you're into that, then it's approachable. 2) Shots and positions - It's Elwin. Can't speak for the Prem as I've got the Pro, but boy has it got flow. If you can get the 6 way combo completed then it's got flow, no doubt about it (only managed 5 way combo myself but I'll crack the 6 way one day). Dial in the outer orbit shot with the upper right flipper and the ball flies round, 8 orbits one after the other is my best so far (mine doesn't rattle) Get the right flipper to left ramp, left flipper to right ramp on repeat, WOW (you should be getting a little moist at this point!) 3) Rules - As @robinfell1219 stated, they really couldn't be simpler, I'll add to that, light EDDIES - Battle The Beast wizard mode (takes about 4 seconds to explain the rules) 4) Humour - It has some, not the best probably, takes the piss out of you when you're s**t in a humorous way 5) Achievable goals - The better you get at playing it, the more achievable the goals become. Locking balls for multiball (first time anyway) EASY, starting a mode/battle - EASY, completing all the modes to start 2 Minutes To Midnight - not so easy but achievable, and when you do achieve it, BOOM! It's the epitome of what this game is all about - missiles and mushroom clouds racking up points, rock music, shaker motor going crazy - if your hearts not racing after that, your probably dead! Number of the Beast wizard mode - hard to achieve (for me anyway - haven't managed it yet. If it's as good as 2MTM then it'll be awesome) 6) Addictive - Absolutely, I'm gonna get to that Number of the Beast wizard mode eventually 7) Rewarding/Frustrating - more rewarding than frustrating because of 5) above. Frustrating like many pinballs can be when you get close to achieving a goal but f**k it up and that's what makes it 6) above. 8) Toys/Mechs - Pro, none, all the better without 9) Regret it leaving - I loaned it out for a while to @doggard, got a bit tearful when it returned. If you absolutely hate flow and want a game that shoots like a shitter get yourself a Godzilla. Jurassic park is a bit better but still far from fun. Overrated to me. I love flow and speed and these layouts do nothing for me but slow things down and make pinball as tedious as possible. For others it might be „challenging“ instead. To each their own.

Ouch hahaha TZ is the only game I have in my company supplied house and I'm currently pumping a lot of money into it to get it perfect. But can't really disagree. I love it. But just like Addams, it is overrated.

Underrated would be The Shadow and Bram Stokers Dracula. Overrated would be Total Nuclear Annihilation and Attack from Mars.

For me "overrated" pins are the ones where you don't get your bang for the buck. That means the top 10 aside, I think overrated pins are more related to the pricing. I really like MM, but is overrated. same goes for all this 90's games that are more expensive that some NIB premiums. My list: MM, Indy, TZ, TOTAN, Data East Guns N Roses, TAF. Arabian nights is something I would really want, but not at 10K. Honorable mentions: DE Jurassic park. I HATE this game. wouldn't buy it for 2.5k and it's going for what, 5k?

AIQ is over rated. Way to frustrating and dumb rules.

I understand that you hate playing iron maiden pinball but i guess your aversion for their music style is a tad blurring your judgement on some aspects of the game. You state Eddie is nothing linked with the group while it has always been their mascot from day 1 and is represented in all of their albums covers (as well as merchendise). Then you complain about the theme being all over the place on the playfield mixing egypt with other futuristic elements and once again your lack of interest/knowledge in the band is leading you to that conclusion otherwise you would have known that the playfield art mixes the themes of various iron maiden famous albums. And if you wanna summarize the goal of the game for someone who doesn't know the band then it could go like that : You play as Eddie, Iron Maiden's mascot, who must take on alternate versions of himself through various missions and steal their soul shards before taking on the Beast. When Spooky Pinball released Halloween pinball, i re-watched the movie before playing the pin just to refresh my mind about characters and theme (even though i can't say it's my favourite movie and/or theme). When Barrels of fun recently released Labyrinth, i did the same even though i hated this movie when i first watched it in the 80s, just to make sure i understood better the assets of the game before playing it. Maybe at least reading the wikipedia page about iron maiden band would have helped you understand some of the assets in the game and have a better balanced judgement. Who knows... :=)))

As far as overrated I really don't like wonka. A friend of mine had one and no one in our group really liked it. As for underrated I would say JP home pin is underrated since many never get a chance to try it out and there are a bunch of people who think its crap because its a home pin.

Most overrated: 1.Twilight Zone 2. Black Knight Swords Of Rage 3. Jurassic Park 4. Attack From Mars 5. The Addams Family. You are so utterly wrong about Iron Maiden, by the way. Just the flow of the shots alone makes it great. The ramps are a bit difficult, but still. Also.... the music is great, so please get an update in your taste😊.

I first got into the hobby in 2019. Was so excited to play The Adams Family because I saw how much it was going for. Very overrated game.

Still allot of games I haven’t played, some I have that are supposed to be great I didn’t enjoy like white water. Didn’t get it. But might be because I didn’t have a good game on it the 10 times I played it.

Iron maiden is the worst

Agree on Iron Maiden! I never understood the mad love. I think it is fun to play once in awhile, but #5? Mine is JJP Pirates. I can't believe it is top 15. I just think people paid a lot of money and they rank it high out of pure indignation. Medieval Madness = Attack from Mars = Cactus Canyon. Own one, you own them all. Nice game play for sure, but all similar shots, awesome and funny call outs, lots of fun, great personalities, but 1 is plenty and I guarantee you WILL get tired of it if you play it too much. They all get repetitive and none are very challenging.

AC/DC, The Simpsons Pinball Party. Should like them both themewise but just don't like the 'flow', lay-out...

Maybe I can agree (somewhat) with Medieval Madness, because it was rated through the roof for so long. Not bad, but I prefer some others. I actually also never got into the Lord of the Rings machine despite being hugely into the books.

Top underrated or popular pin that you personally don't like?

First game to come to mind for me is Stern Jurassic Park! I just find it tedious collecting all the dinosaurs and multiballs don't give me a big payoff feeling when playing. Funny iron maiden was mentioned though, that's the only music pin I like, haha

Great subject - subjective, indeed! I think the impact The Addams Family pin had at the time should be considered. It was highly innovative, gave pinball a shot in the arm and (I think) is the biggest solid-state seller ever? I know, none of that necessarily makes the game good now! My most overrated? Twilight Zone for me. Intriguing, beautiful, complex... to its detriment. Never found it fun, just confusing. Maybe it needs loads of plays to get in to...

Batman 66'. It's ok, way more interesting games out there, with better themes.

Twilight zone does leave something to be desired… I wasn’t a fan of Adam’s family until recently but now I’ve watched the films and started getting into the rules of the table and adjusting to the lack of ball save. I think having a good time on the table revolves a lot around not using the thing flipper and it’s paying cautiously. Twilight zone has cool mecs but all my drains feel unfair and out of player control. A lot of straight down the middle returns or pops that send the ball out. This could be how the game is set up as well and maybe I need to invest more games. Whatever it is hasn’t clicked with me yet. I find it can be easy to overlook certain games especially somewhere with a lot of choice. I walked past dead pool for months because the theme and aesthetic doesn’t appeal to me but after playing in competition I’ve found the shots and game to be quite satisfying. Hard to kind of pick one because I could make a case for any popular game to be overrated even the games I like and it really is a preference opinion at the end of the day

I found a red and teds road show near me for sale, I really think I'm gonna pull the trigger on. Very fun game and there's a stern mustang le near me for sale that I really like as a ford master mechanic

Would love an episode about worst pinball machines for themes you love, and best machines for themes you don’t like. For example, I like the Deadpool and Stranger Things machines but not a fan of the Star Wars or The Godfather machines.

I think there are many different ways to describe overrated. You can dislike Addams Family all you want but it the sales figures (number 1 of all time) say it's not overrated. Also, you need to take into account long term or short term. You can love a game short term and hate it long term and vice versa.

I think a middling-to-poor shooting table, combined with a divisive theme, makes for a classic ‘overrated’ table. I would never call “Twilight Zone” overrated because I grew up with the show and it still has a soft spot in my heart. I think you nailed it with music-themed games … if you don’t care for the band, probably doesn’t even matter how good the table might be. For me, I would say literally any Jurassic Park machine is overrated because I just don’t care that much about dinosaurs or that franchise. I agree with you about Iron Maiden … don’t care for the band so I’d never choose the play it, no matter how good it is. Jaws is another for me, just don’t care how good it looks or shoots, I’m not a fan of the movie. That guy that said Star Trek TNG was overrated is out of his damned mind, though. 😂

Honestly, I think the main reason people like this game is simply nostalgia. There’s so many of them and everyone’s played one at some point in their lives (including non pinball enthusiasts). I think this pin just brings people back to their younger years and the fond memories associated with that time. Which is awesome and just fine. However, I just don’t think it’s a fun game (all those damn pop bumpers on the left) and once you’ve toured the mansion that’s it. I’m also not a huge fan of the theme.

I have never played Addams Family, but I've never understood why it is so highly thought of. Either, there must be a lot of fans of the film/TV series, or the game play has to be top draw. One game I would say, could be overrated is Attack from Mars. Nothing wrong with the theme, but the scoring is so insane. A million points for hitting a pop bumper? Ridiculous! I can't say that I'm a fan of any music based pins, even though I like some of the bands, so I can understand why you would say Iron Maiden is overrated. At the end of the day, it's a case of one man's poison... I'd have a Twilight Zone, if I could afford it. Very clever machine and packed full of interesting features. Plus, I like the theme.

ST:TNG, AFM, and any super hero themed pinball.

I think scooby doo is underrated. And toy story. I wish there was a crane in it and the skill shot is dumb but i like the modes and the layout.

Have a EHOH I wouldn't think twice about evicting to make room for the PF once it gets here. But then again she might be here awhile if I know CGC. Speaking of which CC is totally overrated.

To me, overrated is any game that doesn't give you toys, mechs, sculpts in line to what you are paying. Many recent Stern games fall into this category but they are definitely not alone. On the one side, you have the tournament player who mostly looks for flow and speed, on the other side you have the 'world under glass' and theme guys (myself included in that group). This is what leads to the divided opinions on what 'overrated' is. As an example, I love 'Champion's Pub', most people think the game sucks. My favorite game of all time is 'Dialed In'. Again, all I ever hear about is what a crappy and confusing 'theme' it is. So as to not be a complete 'Negative Nancy', I'll nominate 'Bram Stoker's Dracula'. As a person who loves horror themes, I have tried to like that game many times and every time I play it somewhere, I walk away thinking that the game sucks. It's ranking isn't so high that it can be 'way overrated' but I think it's a little overrated. More importantly, everyone knows that playing a different machine of the same title plays very differently and can drastically alter one's opinion of a game.

Are some of these games over rated or over priced? I think the price of some games drive expectation which makes it hard to judge evenly against a cheaper game. I'm gonna start work on that tash now I know how it'll look btw!

I hated avengers after being recommended one and problem is price factor and expectation There is some great bang for bucks out there in classic titles Obviously they are not coded anywhere deep as modern titles but in a small collection there's a place for these especially system 11 ones And sometimes a quick 5 mins is enough and something very organic about these older ones

I love Mando pro not premium. Havent played premium enough to judge but i think the pro is underrated. The rules and theme integration are great. The challenge mode is soooo much fun. If you have a shaker motor and the audio turned up that is a beautiful game.

If what we are hearing about Pedretti Gaming getting ready to release a bunch of old Bally/Williams title. This is going to test the opinions of people on which games are truly popular and which are overrated. As an aside, Cary Hardy has confirmed, even though he has a non-disclosure agreement, that this is happening. He said on his channel to just take any 5 games that you wish would be remade and chances are that at least 1 or 2 of them are in the works.

Overrated and over Priced.

I know I'm going to get slated for this but how about doing a review on a 11K Vr pinball machine. Not quite the same but Zen Studios do some amazing work on Williams table. If I had the choice between one real one or a top of the range VR one with thousands of table I know what I would choose.

When my kid was growing up, the arcade we frequented had 3 pinballs: Attack From Mars, NBA Fastbreak and Addam's Family. We loved the former two, and 20 years later we'll still play them when the opportunity presents. The latter never resonated at all, and we never found it to be the least bit of fun. (Fastbreak definitely belongs in the underrated list)

I really appreciate your posting new pinball videos, especially because your viewpoint is from someone who enjoys pinball but has to manage purchasing on budget (like most of us). I don't know if the overrated comparison of a SS pin to a DMD pin to a LCD pin (like Stern Godzilla) is really an equal playing field. Maybe you can revisit the overrated and underrated pins by era to see if the results are different.
