I have a question regarding dead bees and varroa mites. If the dead bees were collected over a certain amount of time, would it give an idea of the mite count? I'm a newbie and haven't noticed many dead bees but the thought came to me that I should pick them up and have a look. This is an awesome video, I learned so much. It was good to see the difference between a worker cell and a drone cell, something I will keep watch for from now on. All the best! I'm back to tell how my bees are doing. They are busy and enjoying the heat that just arrived. Acivity is good when it's hot but really slows down around 22 degrees or less. We have one hive and placed a queen excluder & honey super on a couple weeks ago. They are just starting to work on the outter frames of the super. Tried to lift the box off but it was too heavy, did not have a spare box to move frames out.... Tomorrow will inspect the brood box and inner super frames, pretty excited since it's my first time. Will be reviewing your video's tonight to refresh what I'm going to be looking for. Hope things are going well and your year will be awesome!

By the time the bees are dead the varroa have moved on to new hosts. I don't believe collecting the dead bees would give you and idea of how many mites you have. Most beekeepers here do sugar shakes or alcohol wash methods to check for varroa. There are resources out there like this article from MSU that will teach you how to conduct a sugar shakes/roll. pollinators.msu.edu/resources/beekeepers/varroa-mite-monitoring1/ And there are apps for your phone that will walk you through the steps beeinformed.org/citizen-science/mitecheck/ We will make a video in the future that covers sugar rolls. Sounds like you're just starting your spring! How exciting and busy! Remember a mentor and local knowledge will be your best resource! Good luck and we look forward to hearing more from you!

Hi, I just found your youtube channel today and i really like your videos. I'm thinking about getting into beekeeping next year and taking this year to prepare and learn what i'm getting into. I have a quick question regarding where to place the hives: On my property i have 2 medium shipping containers used for storage and i'm thinking about placing the hives on top of those. It strikes me as a nice spot for the bees. no one would go up there unless it was to tend to the hives. possible downsides i can see are that it may be more exposed to wind and heat (or cold), and that i would have to bring heavy frames filled with honey down a ladder. ( i live in norway btw) any thoughts on that?

Welcome! Glad you like the videos. I can’t imagine having to climb up there with all the equipment and bring it back down especially when it’s time to harvest. Some other considerations...not sure how windy it gets, but you’d probably have to think about how to strap the hives down if it gets blustery. Boxes can get close to 100 pounds if full of honey so it’s definitely something to consider. Also, I know as often as we have a plan, sometimes we have to run into the honey shed to grab something we inevitably forgot. Hope it works out well for you though. I know there are people that keep hives on roofs so it is doable, just don’t think it’s be our cup of tea.
