because air and water can both have techniques that can stop you from bending. earth benders especially need thier stances to bend. while blood bending and taking the air out of your body does need any set up. everyone always look at the most op types and not the one with the most uses.
If you go into the lore the reason why avatar Keoshi was able to live so long was using a type of earth bending on her bones that slowed her aging to a crawl

The more I think about Avatar, the more I don’t understand how the fire nation is wining against the 2 other elements that literally counter it (I did not watch the show but heard bits and pieces of it)
and, technically, 3!! like, yeah, water is pretty obvious; earth is op as all hell; but fire also needs oxygen to catch on and stay, so technically, air should have been enough to stop them also 🤷♂️

Pretty easy to explain, Fire Nation have a monopoly on Metals and advanced technology, they have tanks and air ships when every other nation is pretty much stuck with wagons and horses. Especially when their bending complement their machine incredibly well. In a head to head fight, they might have a slight disadvantage due to the element mismatch, but when you add literal war machine as the factor to it, you can see how they are winning.
Correction, metal bending was NOT unheard of, Guru Pathik mentioned that metal bending was more than possible to do and he sounded very causal about it
Because it was theoretically possible and guru was casual about everything. Toph was the first bemder ever to metal bend (that we know of) but guru saying it's possible doesn't prove that someone before toph did it

It's really crazy how broken lava bending is. First of all, as you said, Ghazan was able to do in moments what the fire nation couldn't even come close to doing, and there's also the fact that he only died because he chose to try and take Bolin down with him.
I'm pretty sure if the fire nation had some earth benders they could have done the same, but in either scenario earth benders can just come in and patch up the hole after it is created.
1. Still an impressive feat but Gazan destroyed the inner wall which was just meant for division, not the outer wall designed for protection. 2. While not confirmed, the fact that there only exists two lava benders and the only one whose parentage is confirmed is half fire nation, it's possible normal earth benders are incapable of ever learning the art.

Since he didn’t enter the avatar state fully during that event, he didn’t have access to lavabending, and considering how not even ten minutes later, he ended up dying, probably for the best that he didn’t go into the avatar state and use lavabending.
Earth benders really said “I want fire bending AND water bending at the same time” lava bending is crazy like that since it’s literally three elements at the same time. You get the fluidity of water and heat of fire while still being earth. It’s like some shit an avatar OC would have like “he’s not an avatar, but he can still manipulate liquid rock and fire at the same time while JUST being an earth bender”

This is why Lava bending should've had a certain requirement. What I mean is in order for one to become or awaken their lava bending is for their parent being an Earth and Fire bender. This would make sense on how and why an earth bender can heat up rocks to become molten. I genuinely don't think they thought that through to its fullest.
Magma/lava is really slow tho, imagine if plastic bending existed, I believe it would be closest to earth bending, still, if you could plastic bend, you would basically be a GOD in this modern era

Ever heard of Bone Bending? It’s allows the user control of others in the same way as blood bending. But lets you move them more fluently and can be more or less painful. It’s also Earth bending and gives you insane durability and regeneration.
Sand stepping is crazy as well. I don't believe it was in kyoshi books but iirc it was also confirmed that Kyoshi lived for 200 years due to an earthbending technique that slows aging to a crawl. Only reason she died is because she chose to reincarnate for another avatar.
I would disagree. Fire is the most abundant after air, with earth being next. My reason being, is because the fire comes from themselves, not from other sources, while with earthbenders, they can't bend if they don't have access to earth, or metals, we can see this in the episode when Katara tries to free the earth benders they can't/don't have the resources at the time to fight back. Another example is when the lavabender in Korra is trapped on a wooden boat in the middle of the ocean with no access to any earth. He is basically powerless.
I would make the point that a skilled waterbender can even take water from humid air, from the plant life around them, use it to manipulate plants (and animals and people) like swampbenders. But you gotta be skilled and taught
Honestly, I still think lavabending should've been a firebending subset. In the original series, we only ever see firebenders use it. Roku, Sozin, that one Fire Nation Avatar that looks like Jafar, and possibly Kyoshi. At the very least, it should have been exclusive to Avatars.
The only thing stopping earth bending from being the most deadly is the Nickelodeon logo. They hit you with that wall and shatter combo, you’re Swiss cheese. They hit you with that wall corridor squish combo. Dead. Metal bending and bullets? Dead. Metal bending with their little disks flying at you with velocity? Dead. There was a reason why Kurvira was bloody terrifying and able to piece up the Avatar with Zero diff! Earth benders are menaces.
air benders will always be the most op. earth is held back because they are stance heavy to do everything they do. air bending master with flight and mastering the art of dodging with great speed and agility. then they can also suck the air out of you as well. an air bender just ahs to create strong winds and knock the earth bender off balance and they would have too much trouble bending to do anything. only thing that holds back air benders were they were pacifists.
While it's dead, blood bending will never truly die, that's something I love about the avatar universe, a little thought and creativity leads to new bending.

One problem. Any sub bending that is "lost" can be rediscovered at any point. Someone has to invent these bendings in the first place, so people can just do it again.
Plantbending was pretty OP, given Huu was casually wrecking tanks in broad daylight with just kelp. He could also keep track of things across the entire swamp and taught Aang to do the same thing, which he never did again. That was basically the seismic sense just through living material. Hell, we never saw him at full power under a full moon.
Earthbenders for real have some of the most hard core sub bending types. From bending FUCKING LAVA to bring able to bend glass. Like BROOOOOO no one standing a chance against that shit lol
air is objectively the most op. can unlock flight. and air masters master the art of dodging. just combining those two things make them hard to kill. then take that they can suck the air out of you. and earth benders need to use stances for all their abilities while air benders dont need stances to use a lot of thier air bending so keeping them, from being able to stand and launch earth attacks neuters them. only thing holding air benders from defeating everything casually is thier pacifism.
Personally I don’t think blood bending dying anytime soon. Even if katara takes it to her grave. Cause she and Hama were supposed to be the only users, yet some random guy figured it out and he and his bloodline surpassed them by miles. All it takes is a little imagination and practice and someone else is bound to crack it. Only a select few earth bender used to be capable of metal bending. Now there’s a whole damn city filled with them
It’s still incredibly situational because normally it requires the full moon to trigger this. And that’s assuming you don’t get caught and be snuffed out by the populace.

Only 1 out of 100 eartbenders can’t metalbend which is a crazy number, so practically all earthbenders can learn to metalbend, but lavabending might be tied to earthbenders who have a Firebender parent like Bolin
Right, each one has really cool techniques and aspects to it It's the accessibility part that's probably the hardest part, Fire is what I would say would come after Earth because Lightning bending seems to be pretty common now and it's still a bolt of lightning that can damage most people Things like Blood bending or True Flight are arts almost no one but certain individuals know
@@Eking-su3tr Not quite. It's primarily lightning, but the fire sages were able to help Korra with some spiritual healing in something of a sister technique to the healing waterbenders can do. Firebending has a form of healing to it, and you could argue that something like smokebending or ashbending can also be fire subsets, something like cloudbending or steambending.
not how it works, they bend the earth in the iron, not the iron in the earth. also, humans are 70% water, but I'll be surprised if we have more than 0.1% of iron in the body.

One aspect of bending in the show. I wish they had at least experiment in a bit more on was numbered bending like what if large groups of benders made earthquakes or tidal waves massive storms, mountains it would be cool to think they could reshape the land to their will.
We got to see that in the form of technology and building. Fire benders powering their machines was one. The walls of the northern water tribe was 2. And ba sing along with republic city buildings were likely created by earth benders

Tecnilicy you could kinda "bloodbend" as a earth bender because you have iron in your blood, so you could kill somebody by bending their metal inside them to stop blood flow to places and place enough of it together to cut through them and cause internal bleeding also
There are some comics that say a subset of earth bending was Bone Blending and if you mastered it it can make you immortal manipulating the minerals in your blood.

The thing is that whenever someone brings up Blood-bending they never mention how the Hama only discovered it because she was a prisoner in a fire nation camp and was was put in a position where she had to resort to extreme methods to be able to be free.
I mean it's really irrelevant, the fact everyone goes oh no blood bending it's so eviiiiil is really dumb. If I'm using it to keep your blood in you because you're bleeding out, it isn't evil. And you can't even go, oh, it leads people to evil, since that's dumb too. You could be just as horrifying if not more with every other element. Flamethrower, giving people the Benz or embolisms with air, or just suffocation, and if earth bending moves minerals, an argument could be made bones are made of minerals. Time to break em.
Metal bending is cool, because even before Toph was able to learn it, it was stated to be impossible to bend such a thing that when she escaped from that metal box, they still couldn’t comprehend metal could be able to bend.
Metal bending is bending the particles of earth combined or contained in the metal , pure metal itself can't be bent..well unless ur magneto or sum shii
In the novels of Kyoshi, there was a man who could bend his own molecules with earth, bending and stay immortal which is thought on the reason why Kyoshi lives so long implying you can turn it off
I really like the earth bending subsets. Only one problem with lava bending is the fact that they wouldn't use it to it's full potential on screen because there's no way they're going to really show the full power of Lava bending on a kids show.
Lest we forget Kyoshi apparently invented glass bending. Not even sure if that's just combining certain elements or if that's just her earthbending, but that's just an amazing sub category if it would be included.
What I like about the bending of this series is that the subsets somewhat let benders use other elements to some capacity, like bloodbending somewhat being related to earthbending because of the iron in peoples' blood, and of course lavabending since it's just earth + fire together.
God, the thought of Lava bending is so scary. Like you could legit just make the ground turn molten and collapse an entire building. Earth bending in general is so frightening.
Now that I think about it metal bending could also be used for blood bending because there’s iron in blood, and if you want to take it to the extreme, toph could bend a meteorite so in my head cannon she can bring meteors down from space.
I talked about all the subbing you could see, but it’s actually talked about. There wasn’t enough to actually blood bend but he found out you could bend bones. That look at the terrifying ways of the dark arts. You have water blood bending you become a puppet, bone bending just shatters your bones or strengthens them if you do it to yourself properly, but it’s extremely painful air bending literally takes the air out of your lungs, fire bending can remove the heat from your body. And I still think burning to death would be worse than that.

Hot take: its air bending. Tbh I dont really care for the destructive capabilities when thats only for destruction but metal bending is really nice for creation. Air benders get a lot of passive buffs which I imagine would count for sub bending including awareness of their surroundings, temperature control around them, no worry for gravity, natural increase in speed, light on their feet, and probably other stuff I'm forgetting. Its a lot of stuff not often directly mentioned but seen.
@@AstroSully agreed. I don't think people realize how strong winds at just 40mph and I think it's fair to say an above average air bender breaks that with ease.
The question was specifically about subsets of the element though. And the only real subtype of airbending is flight-which is impossible for like 99% of people because we all like our earthly attachments. Even most air nomads had a few things they couldn't give up which is likely why we only hear about Guru Laghima knowing flight.

Indeed but honestly I think air could very well be the most strongest or at least one of the most dangerous elements by technical means since with enough air pressure you can cut through anything plus there’s… Pushing so much air into someone’s lugs they explode way… so you know plenty of options
Something that doesnt get talked about a lot is "flying" with earth bending. Using sand or dirt or whole chunks of earth to walk through the air. Free flight through air bending is rare, thats why they used their gliders and now their wing suits after Korra. Propulsion with fire bending was limited mostly by the benders not having the power for long (if they did, then thered be no worry of Azula being able to save herself after the fight with Zuko at the air temple) and only fully unlocked during the comet. Water benders can only jet themselves around for as long as they have water beneath them. But if an earthbender had a good control of sand they could keep going until they got tired
I swear people sleep hard on the earth element as a whole. They keep saying how fire, lighting, water, ice, and air elements are the best but they completely move over the element that can make you literally move planets like weapons or even use stuff like the full on asteroid belt as a cosmic whip
I think an interesting one could be fine tuning lightning bending to the point of controlling or messing with the nervous system. Imagine just stopping someone's heart, or changing a memory

Idk water bending seems like the subtypes that get slept on. You have plant bending, pulling moisture from the air, cloud bending, healing, ice bending, steam bending, the subset of blood bending that can remove someone elses bending, & im sure mud bending is more than possible for them as well but probably not what they'd be used to. Honestly if a water bender trained in all elements styles they'd basically be the avatar without Rama.
True Earthbender master are just very powerful. Imagine someone who could Lava Bend, Metal Bend and Bone Bend, you would have an close to Avatar level Bender that could nearly Fire Bend (Lava), Air Bend (Sand), Water Bend (Mud), Earth Bend and Metal Bend plus slowed aging due to Bone Bending.
I give it to earth as well, not only can they function pretty much anywhere, they got more than one move they can hit you with earth has so many things to worry about: you can get blinded, broken bones, dislocated joints, burns, read like a book, trapped, and damn the list goes on and on
When I was a kid, I always said I would pick Firebending as my starting point if I were an Avatar. As an adult, I would pick Earthbending in a heartbeat
Literally everyone has the potential to access the spriit realm. Do you recall the metal bender who worked with Zaheer as a spy ? He entered the spirit world the same way Zaheer did. That's not special. Astral projection is likely not unique to airbenders either
I have a fun story to tell about the avatar rpg. (This just reminded me about it.) I was playing a metal bender. And I made use of these metal wires on my arms for to find an amulet. Using them as like a sixth sense. Me and the party went to a story which sold it. And I asked them for a badgermole amulet. But they only had dragon stuff. So that was a fun back and forth.
Plus there’s the fact that in the last airbender, it was the Dai Li agents under Azula’s employ that actually took down the wall to let the fire nation in.
Okay considering the whole "the best benders take techniques from other elements to round out their weaknesses" thing, I feel like It'd be super cool for a firebender to copy ice bending style and counter lava bending by just draining all the heat out of it.
Id love to see someone take lightning bending to the extremes though, like imagine of instead of the the evil avatar spirit we got azulas grand daughter being a pure lightning bender throwing out lightning whips and shit.
Minor correction: Blood bending can be done at all times of day, and it wasn’t only known to one family. It was banned by the United Republic of Nations, probably for its unethical use of the opponent’s body instead of outside elements that can be blocked. It’s like using mind control or biological warfare, it’s just too powerful and cruel. However, that’s also its biggest weakness. You can’t practically use it without lawful repercussions, and you’ll certainly get tired of fighting before you run out of opponents who oppose its use.
Not to mention the possibilities for creation just as much as destruction with earth bending. You could sculpt metal like clay, extract things from ores nearly perfectly, and raise clay houses from the earth in a matter of hours.
Lightning bending if my favourite. People also forget but with lightning you can electrify water that water benders are controlling to electructe them. Or do the same thing against Metal benders
One point, katara was able to blood bend without a full moon in that one episode where she tracks down her mom's killer. So with enough training a water bender could blood bend at any time they wish 😁
I'm pretty sure blood bending can be done after a skill level. Katara uses it on the southern raider leader to get the info about the previous one. Kara uses it in her show
yeah I kind of agree with you on earthbending especially glass pending but I think there's a subset of firebending that would be very powerful plasma bending
With mudbending being able to be used in substitution of waterbending, lavabending being able to be used in substitution of firebending, & sandbending being able to be used in substitution of airbending (not even mentioning metalbending, crystalbending, or seismic sense), earthbending is really op.
Even if small the fact that any airbender can learn on any day they want how to pull the air out of lungs is still a smidge scarier. Thought smushed by metal or melted by lava still sucks.
Not to mention Bone Bending. It can break others bones or strengthen your own. It was theorized that Kyohi used this to live so long and Toph may have it
The only issue I have with the seismic sense is that it went from an ability that was essentially passive, but could be focused in. To the bender having to strike a specific pose for it to work. Not to mention how ridiculous the pose looks as well as it informs your opponent what you are doing.
Lava bending was originally fire and earth mixed together so only the avatar could do it until korra’s show came in Nickelodeon decided to change things
Something that I think of sometimes is that Bolin and Mako, two brothers, with different bending elements, but Bolin, ha can lava bend, because his brother is a firebender, meaning parentage has gotta do with your bending and it's subbending.
Earthbending is like picking Squirtle in Gen 1 Pokemon, you going easy mode. And as a Squirtle fan, I'm all for it if that's what I'm doing, even if it means I don’t choose my fav bending type of water.
Wind is surgical destruction, the scalpel of the bending combat world. Fire is the classic machine gun of bending combat. Water is kinda like boxing because while there may be pads covering those hands they can still rain down some serious damage. And then there is earth bending, which is basically like living with the perspective of "everything looks like a nail with a hammer in your hand", and then pulling out a giant fuck off hammer to erase shit from the face of the earth while also throwing smaller hammers at whatever gets away.
