What bird is that?
In the leadup to this year’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count, our very own National Public Affairs Manager Sean Dooley is talking us through how to tell the difference between commonly confused backyard birds.
In this video, we’re talking all things wattlebirds - and the easiest ways to tell which one is visiting your garden!

I've always thought the Red Wattlebird sounded like a sticker gun like the ones they use in supermarkets to tag prices, particularly when they do that repetitive whocka-whocka call (maybe a mating call?) I used to wonder what bird it was and people thought I was describing a willie wagtail. Glad I figured out which bird it was.

you are absolutely right I always have a big one chanting at 5AM making me absolutely miserable and deprived but when i occasionally see it around my window to suck on those flowers i have, Im not mad anymore.

Great video. They are amazing birds. I just raised 2 from very young age they fell out the nest their eyes were still closed now they fly around the suburbs to various friends houses for sneaky feeds and cuddles. It's been an absolutely amazing journey seeing these 2 little birds grow up to be healthy big good behaved half wild half tame birds. It was a mission at first but once I found the right food there was no stopping them. If anyone needs any help with raising them reply to this and I'll let you know how it's done. Wish I filmed the progress of them growing up more. I got a bit of footage but not enough 😅 great video mate cheers.

Wattlebirds are just amazing and epic. I had a breeding couple visit daily in my yard from 2004 to 2015. The female would sit on the shed and watch whatever I was doing. The male had a gentle rapport with me as well. They bought every brood in to feed on the bottle brush trees I had. Moving was very sad for me, I still miss them dearly, especially knowing they now would've both passed. However, in my new area, I now have a legion of 20 or so wattlebirds visiting daily for some fruit and a bath. One male in particular, he's quite special and definitely very intelligent. He'll come and hock-a-chock if there's 'trouble' like unknown people outside. Other times he'll just sit with me perched up keeping lookout. Some say they're noisy, but hey, it's time to wake up anyway. Glory and power to the wattlebird!

saw some cool birds at a little neighborhood park on a walk today, loved their shapes and calls so I decided to look them up. am a wattlebird fan for sure now ! they're so neat because I was observing them from under the trees they were flying around in, one of the first things I noticed was the yellow underbelly and stripey chest of the red wattlebird :)

My lifelong dream is to work for BirdLife Australia. I have Red & Little Wattle Birds on my property. I find the Little Wattle birds to be absolutely gorgeous, especially when in flight in the late afternoon, allowing the sun's rays to illuminate the deep orange/copper in their primary and secondary feathers. Honeyeaters are such brilliant birds!

This was a great help - thanks. That's exactly what's waking me at 5:00am each morning, so irritating - little wattle Bird, here in Port Macquarie.

I was told that the two calls I hear (one call in winter, another in spring), are both by wattle birds (here in the Adelaide hills). I did not fully believe the spring call was also a wattle bird. But the mystery has been solved. In the winter (at least), it is the red wattle bird, and in the spring, the little wattle birds arrive (they sound goofy as). Thanks for the info.

Thank you for your informative video. I was wondering what bird was doing this repetitive call every morning at 5 am, and your video gave me the answer; the Little Wattle bird.

My son thought that a bird was in trouble in our backyard, because it sounded like he was choking. You hear and see them all the time in the garden. They come quite close to you and had a nest outside our kitchen window. I told him that it was just a Little Wattle bird and they were quite common in our garden. He was worried that the bird was in trouble.

I just found a baby one who can't fly, have him in a box to calm him down. I don't have a number so I can't call any wildlife professionals to take him away. He has very sharp talons.
