Racing is one reason there isn't many riverboats left. Part of the Ky Derby is a steamboat race, if you want to see new footage of steamboat racing. Our Belle used to race the Mississippi and Delta Queens. Not sure who she races now, since one was scrapped and the other reduced to a floating hotel/casino. As much as I love the Belle, those two girls were impressive in size and I kinda miss them, even when they did win the golden antlers.

My grandfather was mate on a two funneled tugboat, the Lady Brassey, working for the Dover Harbour Board, in the mid 1900s. The two funnels were a consequence of having two engines, one for propulsion and one for salvage purposes. The salvage engine drove a large pump that could be used either to remove water from a vessel that was floundering, or to serve fire hoses.
@JH-lo9ut
@JH-lo9ut 4 месяца назад
Two funnels usually means two boilers, but there might be a number of boilers that go into the same funnel too. The tug can have several auxiliary engines for winches and windlasses and other functions. Once there in a source of power -steam pressure, that power can be redistributed around the ship in pipes. The museum ship, icebreaker "st. Erik" in Stockholm, has fourteen different Steam engines including powered steering, windlasses, mooring winches, electric generators and of course the main propulsion engine, wich is the world's largest running marine steam engine. Only one funnel though...

So cool seeing our steamer the Belle Of Louisville in the video! That was an old pic of her racing either the Delta or Mississipi Queen. She continues to out live them both, still going on tours. She has about 15,000 horsepower and if you push her, she can do about 15mph. In her early life, before she was ran as Idlewilde, I believe, Belle was a tug. She moved barges on the Missisipi River. One of the oldest steam paddles still working, she was built in the 1800s, or mid/late 1700s as a barge herself.

PS Kingswear Castle is another side-wheel steamer that you should check out. She is a passenger steamer rather than a tug, but shares many features in common with the paddle tugs like John H Amos and Eppleton Hall.

Thank you for the vid, I agree that Willy's paddler was based on a tug. I have gazed upon the _Eppleton Hall_ many times at her moorings. Her story is amazing, I believe there are YT vids detailing it. You should also look at the Alligator Boats / Alligator Tugs used for forestry work in Canada - some of them were also paddlewheel-powered, they are closer in size to Mickey's steamboat, and their extremely rudimentary, boxy superstructure is somewhat more cartoonish than the larger paddlewheel tugs typically carry

Enjoyed this, with the old time pictures - I like paddlesteamers, and have visited the Eppleton Hall. John Amos I'd not heard of, yet I live in England! Sadly, ships are not the easiest of things to preserve - usually they're rather large and awkward! I've only ever seen bits of Steamboat Willie, so nice to see more of it.
@JohnDavies-cn3ro
@JohnDavies-cn3ro 5 месяцев назад
PS. Back in the 1880s there was a famous Thames paddle tug known as 'Three Fingered Jack,' because she had three funnels. At around the same time there was a Liverpool paddle tug named 'Uncle Sam', which had two funnels - so there were a couple of prototypes for Walt's imagination.

Could there be more info to be taken from the short film, like could the short pants no shirt combo tell something about the possible location of where the short is set, and so could that mean the ship might not be american. Rather perhaps mexican or other central or southern american style ships, heck could it be a canadian style if it's set in the north of america in the summer.. knowing in the border regions it is likely that ships are from different countries and so could show different design que's that make then look even closer

@robertskitch
@robertskitch 5 месяцев назад
Huh, I'd assumed it was the name of the boat as that's the story I've heard the most often, though that could just be a case of something becoming true because it's been repeated so much. I guess, it would make sense as a character name given that in lyrics of the original 'Steamboat Bill' song the name referred to the boat's captain. Of course, for all I know, it could be that Iwerks and Disney just decided to name the film 'Steamboat Willie' because of the use of the song and didn't think any further about it than that...
