Hey John - Your article this month mentioned this link...great article BTW. This is cool. Slide has been elusive...God Bless Texas is a tune I'm going to be a total slide rookie on in my next rehearsal! Will blow away my band...haha but you gave me some confidence...that's what I needed!
Playing slide really forces one to get a good understanding on the fretboard. Just like John said, you can work with the chord shape to form a melody with the slide. And it does sound more expressive than fingers. In that, I believe slide will make a person a better player with fingers. One begets the other.
Keep up the lessons! Really good stuff! Excited to see what other topics you can help us with! I need inspiration from a tasteful player like you..dig it
With all due respect I don't expect everyone to like the same things. It's just human nature. So if someone wants to press the dislike button, that's fine with me. It's when people are narrow-minded and insulting in their beliefs that is the problem.
Good vid. John. We tend to over complicate blues and rock guitar playing. Simple with feeling is a classic sound. I need to subscribe to PG again. I miss that mag.
Without going the typical old school guitar hero route Johnny B a bad-ass guit player through this internet avenue! Inspiring people to play in a different way.. Hopefully I can do the same in my specific playing way..
Hey Jon. Did you live and gig around Billings, MT during the late eighties?? You look like a Jon Bohlinger I knew back then. If this is you I just wanted to let you know I still have and play the 1982 Les Paul XR-1 tobacco sunburst you sold me in 1988 for $550, It is the only earthly possession I have that is going to have to be pried from my cold, dead hands when they bury me. I prize that guitar and I have kept it in as pristine of condition as is humanly possible after twenty odd years of playing it daily. Oh, and on a more personal note, I quit drinking on December 18th, 1989, except for a one nighter nine years ago when a much beloved cat I had at the time had to be put down because I was being stupid and allowed her to get sick of a liver infection because I was too wrapped up in lust and loneliness and was giving all of my money to women who no sooner intended to come to Montana to marry me than I intend to ever give away, sell, or trade my Les Paul. Hard lessons learned. In any case, I am married now to a God fearing lady who had three teen aged boys. I love my boys as if they were my own flesh and blood and I refer to them as "sons" not "stepsons. Much to my pride the youngest is in the MT National Guard and my middle son is in the Army. Anyway, if you are the Jon Bohlinger I knew, thanks for all the encouragement personally and the teachings on the guitar in the day. I still play most of them, if not all and I take great pleasure in seeing how far you have come professionally over the years. Most of all I take great pride in considering you a friend. even to this day -- Jason Erhart.
The struggle I have is finding a slide that fits my pinky properly. Every slide I try just flops around on my finger. I have average adult sized hands.
Libertarian Atheist I thought I was the one who feels alone, Lol. I play slide on my middle finger. I can only name 2 who plays the same as I do: Joe Walsh & Jeff Beck.
Wunnerful... A single nit: does anybody but me wish various lessons were played much, much cleaner? We all KNOW great guitarists can rock out. But to hear the muting, especially if you're going to go into left-and-right hand muting, all the howl can interfere.
