I had my mice in a wire cage we bought when we got them from the pet store. We actually ended up discovering there was a wild mouse in the house; he was small enough to get through the bars and got one of my mice pregnant 😬 Definitely recommend bin cages.
@꧁Elle The Singer꧂ I ended up getting a hamster. For some reason there are no mice to adopt in my area so my dream of having mice isn't going to happen
Molly 333 same! I don’t have hamsters though in my country and everyone’s been getting mice and rats recently I only saw one rat left in the pet shop and no mice 😔
Tha alska hamster cage was my hamsters second cage it really isn't the sturdiest but it's a good size and price for people on a budget just make sure it's very secure :)
I use this as a birthing cage for my rats (I'm a UK breeder (Rala Rattery)). It's not as sturdy as some other cages, but brilliant for what I use it for and I'd imagine, with some minor modifications (personally I think bar spacing is quite large at the rounded points at the top corners, which could be fixed with a bit of garden wire) it would make a good cage for a male mouse or a few females.
robogreifer hi so I have two female mice and I’m trying to make money to get them a bigger tank but I have lots of toys and climbing Things is that okay
God, seeing the price on the tanks freaks me out. How much has society evolved to pay 100 pounds for a frame, a bottom plate, 4 glass panes and a mesh lid thing. Better ask my dad to help me make one. We'd spend way less than even 30 pounds. Oh well... Eat your cereal.
The second to last "cage" she mentioned is bins. That's what I use for my mice. I got two large storage bins, mesh out the sides and connected them with a hamster tunnel. They love it, its huge and it cost 45$ all together. They have 7ftx2ft of running area. Plenty of room for toys
To emiology I am so glad you made this video please if possible and if you haven't can you make another homemade treats video on Easter eggs as I have nothing to do in quarrantine thanks Elouisa
Angel May I have the single critter nation which works great. It has enough room “for up to six rats” but I personally think you should only keep 2-4 rats in there. Hope this helps. The channel “shadow the rat” has good advice on cages as well.
I would also like to say, buy the largest cage you can afford. There's such thing as having a cage that's too small, but not such a thing as having one too large. Considering they'll be spending the majority of their life in the cage, they deserve the largest you can provide them :)
thank you so much for including US links. I am struggling hard to find a more suitable home for my current mice. I have them in a hamster cage but I think they'd like some more floor space
I have a 40 breeder exo terra terrarium for my mice and I love it! I was actually able to hang lots of things from the top mesh using the wire in bread ties!
I can't tell you how helpful this is. I was on a website that was suggesting critter carrier as appropriate habitats and since my rabbits get 50 square feet and my guinea pigs get 10.5 square feet, I knew that had to be wrong.
Im getting rats soon but i really want to get mice too so im doing research on both! Your channel is PERFECT!! i love your channel! Your literally my fricken idol!!!!
My mom hates mice and rats too. But when I was younger I convinced her to let me get a rat. She agreed. I've had a few since then but it's hard when they're not from a good breeder. You usually get rats that don't really like being held so I've had only one good rat from all the ones I've gotten. A few days ago my maintenance worker found a small mouse stuck in a glue trap in one of the other apartments so she asked if I wanted to help get it off. I ended up keeping the little one and I'm hoping it's female so I can buy 1 or 2 more and get a bigger enclosure. My mom isn't thrilled I have it. She wanted me to step on it. 😒 I don't roll that way. I'm currently working on getting it used to me and so far it's not too bad. It has nipped me a few times out of fear but it didn't hurt or leave a mark. (Yes I know the risks) The mouse is fully covered in fur, can run and walk around just fine, has small teeth and I've seen it eat solid foods but I suspect it's still on the mix of formula and solids. It literally looks like a tiny version of an adult house mouse. I suspect it's around 2 or 3 weeks old but can't say for sure because it looks tiny. I can't see any male or female parts so it might not be mature yet so there's still a chance I have a little girl. I was gonna buy some formula but my mother thought that would be a waste since it does eat solid foods here and there and at most it'll be another week till it's weaned. If they came in smaller containers then I would. I've given it water and different foods like Oats, bread, spaghetti noodle, a piece of watermelon, Oats mixed with baby food, which I was told would help but I can't get it to eat it. I've seen it eat cheese in the tank and had it eat cheese from my hands and heard it eat from a dog treat. I wish I knew how old it was exactly though.
I like both Mice and Rats, and I just can’t persuade my mum to let me get rats so I’m settling with mice so now I’m doing very extensive research to make sure my future friend has the best life possible! It won’t be for a while as my room is full, but as my current members start to pass I’m planning on maybe getting a mouse/ mice
my cage for my 3 girls a broken, the lid will not close and it has an easy escape, we covered it with tape but that probably isnt the best option especially since one of them chews everything. but i cant go out and buy a new cage because of the Corona Virus... Do you have any tips?
I made my own bin cage for my pair of females. It is two levels, so they have lots of space. The bin on top is (I'm estimating) about 2 to 3 feet long, and about a foot tall. The bottom bin is a little longer than the top bin, but only about half as tall. There is chicken wire on the side and lid so they have circulation, and they have a hammock, a sputnick, a wheel, a running disk, and lots of cardboard to hide in and chew. Would you say this is a good cage?
i started with a temporary ten gallon for my 5 girls and a week or so later their 30 gallon arrived. now i only yave 3 in the 30 gallon and even so i still want to make an ikea diy cage. 30 gallons are great length and height wise but for wodth theyre awful!!! the absolute minimum I'd recommend would be a 15 gallon for 3 girls.
For my 4 females (hopefully 5 soon 😄) my dad built a custom cage (I needed something for my guinea pig cage to sit on) its 3 SQ. Feet and it has 6 hides,2 8.5 in. wheels, a dig bowl, several hanging toys, and coming up I want to get safe wood to put in the cage for them to climb on if you have any recommendations on how I could improve it I would love to hear them 👍🏻
An enclosure I love is the "pawhut rectangle 115x60cm" one because it is 22" tall, has a mesh lid and see through panels that are held by wood and is quite inexpensive compared to other enclosures of similar sizes and materials (I got it for £53)
I have a ten gallon tank and a tank topper for only one male mouse. So his enclosure is half tank half cage. I’m not too sure if it’s big enough for him but I saved him from being fed to a snake and that’s what he’s in now. So if anyone can answer if it’s an appropriate size please do. The measurements for the tank are - Length: 20.25 IN, Height: 12.625 IN, Width: 10.5 IN. And the measurements for the tank topper is - Length: 19.25 IN, Height : 11.5 IN, Width : 9.75 IN 🙂
Thank you so much for this video! It was really helpful because I am going to get a mouse soon but I don’t know what cage I want and what is good for my pet.
You have some awesome cages on here! I’ve always wanted to build an ikea limmon ( how ever it’s pronounced 😂 ) as its £30 so very cheap and has around 800 square inches of floorspace so that will be the cage I build when my current cage breaks or gets to old , but I feel like most people don’t use the little freinds grosvenor rodent cage from amazon in their videos and the measurements are 78x47x36 so it’s got around 550sq inches of floorspace and it’s a great cage! I use it for my hamster and he loves it, it’s also great for mice and it has a deep base of 4-5 inches for lots of bedding room and plenty of space to add your rodents requirements and more 😁☺️
I have a mouse in a 20 gallon tank. He is a male so im housing him alone. He loves having me make him hideouts with lincon logs! i put a new one in his cage everyday
Not as the main bedding no, its not very absorbent and it will stink. You can give them bits of straw / hay as enrichment they'll enjoy moving it around and making nests with it though
It’s depressing that only the Savic Heaven 80 is available for purchase near me ;; the good news is that there is an ethical rattery and mousery not too far away from me, though. They recommended the largest possible wheel. Thankfully my tank has a mesh lid, though… I promised my sister to put guppies in it.
Hey Em, do you think I can have an other mouse with mine? She has a neurological condition and Used to get bullied at the pet store so I’m not sure how she’d react to another mouse :(
I'm not who you were asking but I thought I might answer anyway. I don't suggest buying/adopting just one more female mice, go for two, because if these two do not get along then you will have the issue of trying to pair the newer one up with a friend. If your female is not showing signs of stress or depression and it's seemingly happy on her own then you can leave her on her own for now. There are quite a few conditions where it is appropriate to leave the house on its own and this may be one, but it is down to your judgement
5:00 please please PLEASEE don’t keep guinea pigs in this cage. I know that emi doesn’t say to keep guinea pigs in this cage but they’re in the picture. This is nowhere enough ventilation as guinea pigs get URI’s really easily like rats and that’s why rats and guinea pigs can’t be kept in tanks
I have a 5 foot long vivarium with 2 strips of mesh on the top of the cage, it has over 1,400 sq inches of floorspace. How many mice do you recommend for it and should I get more ventilation?
I'm not the best at working in sq inches but as it's a similar length to the ikea detolf i'd say you could have a nice large group of about 5-6 females if you wanted to :) It depends on how big the strips of mesh on the top are but if they go all the way along the top it might be okay.
may i suggest a hamster? they're not quite as smart as mice and rats, however they're just as cute and don't have tails. they also have similar requirements to mice! 😊
I wouldn’t go for a super large group as it can be hard to maintain a peaceful dynamic. If you could split it into two detolfs each you could have two groups of females if you wanted, but you could have a large group of females 10+
Awesome video!!! I currently have four mice, three girlies and an intact male. They are currently in a split DCN girls in the top half my boy in the bottom , but I've considered getting a prevue cage for Barry and giving the girls back the full DCN. :3
I really wish there were better, bigger cages available for mice. I'd absolutely splurge on a cage like that. At the moment even the biggest ones commercially available are in my opinion just ridiculously small. And terrariums, even custom made ones, pretty much always look way too poorly ventilated to my taste. I wish there was something like Critternation for mice but with smaller bar spacing. Practical doors, a sturdy frame and the option to combine similar cages into a bigger one would be brilliant. Ferplast's Multipla hamster does seem to attempt something like that but to me it looks like it's on the verge on collapse at any moment. And does not look very escape proof, either. Or practical for handling the animals, or cleaning.
I have a 20 gallon fish tank, is that okay for one mouse? I plan on letting them play in my bathtub with toys and things and it won't be lonely or bored
It's such a shame that most of these cages have been discontinued just 2 years after this video was made. I guess that when you put a £80 proper cage next to a £20 small cage most people still default to the cheap one
I really want to get a rat but in canada the cages are very expensive and me dad always try to do the cheapest way possible but my mom isn’t lol he was to get 3 rats a hamster cage 🤦🏼♀️
Do mice need hight? Because all of this cages are quite low and from reading I understand they are climbers so I was wandering if they're like rats (I used to grow both rats and hamsters) and hight is more important?
In retrospect to their size a lot of these are enough height for mice, and the equivalent of how much height rats get compared to their size. For both species floor space is more important as they are both fossorial, unfortunately most rat cages don't prioritise this so we have to work with what we've got! They will utilise climbing space and its good to provide it but floor space is the most important!
It would be really cool if they started selling parts to make pet enclosures out of their furniture. At least the popular ones, like a mesh top for a detolf or billie.
I really want 1 my bird died a year ago and I feel like something is missing I have a dog and a turtle but i was a mouse but my Mom doesn’t let me but I’ll still try to convince her
Should I keep a mouse that my cat caught in my house. He/she didn’t get any wounds put my cat hurt it’s eye. And I don’t know if its worth keeping. It’s still alive and I’ve been keeping it in a bin cuz I couldn’t bring myself to kill it. I didn’t want to let it go cuz I knew it would get killed if it had a hurt eye. What should I do?
Hi! I was wondering if having rats (3 is how many I could get, males) and 2 very smol (but old) dogs would be fine? I was planing to put off getting rats until we had no animals at our house, but I wanted to see what other people with rats would say. I have plenty of room in my bedroom for a big cage, my dogs rarely go upstairs, and I usually have my doors closed. I want to give my rats the best and most comfy like they could have! ✨💕Thanks💕✨
hi! i need some help! recently my hamster died and I want a pet that has similar care to hamsters. I want to get three female mice but the only thing is the cage. My hamster's old cage was really expensive for me (a 40gal for 150dollars). It's a forty-gallon aquarium and has a full mesh roof. I know mice need a lot of ventilation and this cage does have a mesh roof but the holes are realllllyyy small! i don't know if it will work for mice or not because it might not have enough air flow. Please HELP!
