If the Putin nukes Ukraine, what stops them from nuking anything else they want? This is literally how World War II started - namely, the European powers appeased the Nazis by letting them control the Rhineland and the Sudetenland, but the Nazis said “okay, well they aren’t going to stop us, let’s take Poland”. No, sacrificing humanity for Russia is a foolish proposition. Putin wants to reform the Soviet Union, meaning he wants all of Eastern Europe. Ukraine is the first step. Hitler didn’t stop at Poland, and Putin won’t stop with Ukraine. The only solution is to keep helping Ukraine fight back. So far, Russian nuclear doctrine limits them to using nukes for self defense, namely a credible threat to Russian control and command. So far, there isn’t a threat to Russian C&C, so Russia using nukes at any stage will be seen as a gross overstep and alienate them from China and India, Russia’s biggest remaining allies
I was a kid when the USSR fell, only learned about in fully sone 7 years later. When I learned about it, it was in the framework that peace will reign for all time. But then I also learned the USA/Russia were still armed to the teeth, it was then I realized the Cold War is only on a break and we're all still in peril. Here we are.

The truth is that Russia did not fall. The truth is that it let go of its satellites willingly. Why then, in the name of sanity, has the west and NATO continued with its obsession about Russia being the enemy? NATO broke its promise not to spread eastwards and continued to prod the great bear as if it were clever. I 100% blame the west and NATO for this mess. We could have had neutral countries between NATO and Russia and that would have avoided this situation. Do you seriously believe the USA would tolerate missiles provided by China in Cuba, Canada or Mexico? Of course not! So, why do people think it is reasonable that Russia should be treated differently?
I’m convinced that with all the billions of galaxies out there, not many planets with intelligent life have made it as far as we have without discovering nuclear weapons and annihilating themselves. I’d bet billions of planets have ended this way already. We have repeatedly gotten lucky and barely made it past certain events that should have triggered the end. I hope we can continue to limp along.

I heard his speech, he never said he would be using nukes, he did say he would protect Russia with all the means at his disposal. The western media is taking this and running. Maybe the same enthusiasm should be used to stop that war and save some lives.
It’s called an implication, of course he wouldn’t directly say he would use nukes. That would invite a preemptive strike that would be justified since he literally said he would do it.
It reminds me of the ending to the 1983 film “War Games”. The WOPR (War Operation Planned Response) computer nicknamed “Joshua”, in spite of constantly running WW III nuclear war scenarios, finally learned the most important move of all through the simplistic game of checkers: “A strange game. I never understood why we go through all this trouble with Ukraine. This is a place that nobody in the West cared about a year ago. Yet here we are now, contemplating Nuclear War with Russia over a country that is not even a part of NATO. I'm just gonna go all out and be politically incorrect and selfish when I say, I don't want the rest of us to suffer the consequences for a conflict that is no different than any other conflict happening in other places. I'm tired of these headlines, and I'm tired of seeing Biden, Putin, & Zelensky's face every time I turn on the news.
If you don't do anything then it allows other countries to commit war crimes, invade sovereign nations, and believe that there are no consequences for their actions.
Been following the Maidan Revolution in Ukraine and the subsequent Annexation of Crimea since 2014. What I'm insinuating is we stop escalating the situation further each time Putin makes a threat just to feel good about ourselves. By all means, give the Ukrainians the tools they need, but no more than that.

Then there's option 5. End the war now, along the current battle lines, and accept that those regions voted to leave, by all accounts. Those who fled the area to western Ukraine, they should stay there, to repopulate the portions of the devastated rubble which still remain inhabitable, in spite of 8 years of war in the heart of Europe. It's a wonder we went this long without getting nuked, really. We should consider ourselves rather fortunate (so far, anyway). It would be real easy to mess that up though, and decide we want to declare war on the only country with more nukes than us, over Ukraine, when Russian doctrine would call for an immediate nuclear response, even if it were just conventional strikes, if they came from NATO forces, as Russia would then be at war with all of NATO, and they would know exactly what their remaining options would be, and which they would choose. They will take us with them. They are not bluffing.
But if we let them keep the false voted regions they will jump to the next country and take over next places. And putin will always get what he want. He must be stopped in some way and thats now
He's given the Ukrainians more weapons than the rest of the world combined. It's been enough to destroy a decent chunk of the Russian military. He's doing better than most western leaders.

The Problem with a fight ...Between two fully grown Lions...is that..One on them eventually looses it's Life... Although the rest of the entire jungle..& the world ..still survives... But ...In this case... Well if you and Putin think that by in invading Ukraine , driving the Ukrainians out, holding a sham referendum, declaring that this part of Ukraine is now part of Russia (even though the rest of the world doesn’t agree to it and that colored the Budapest accord that Russia signed ) , and then thinking Ukraine taking back its territory regardless if what Russia is calling jt , is a problem. Putin didn’t threaten nukes. He said if NATO or the U.S. threatens the use of nukes just remember that we too are a super power with nuclear capability in that way of saying it.
Old people have a dispute, young people die. In other words people who have survived things like ww2 end up in power and start ww3 and the innocent die for their ego. "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain"
What about a non-conventional response. For example, a cyber war targetting infrastructure in some very serious way. This is strangely not on the list. But can be very, very devastating IF this option has been developed.
The problem is that the last three options result in the United States getting nuked immediately (or at least our bases in Europe, if we only launch a conventional attack on Russian forces). Any US conventional attack on any Russian forces produces a Russian tactical strike on US assets, on Rammstein air base, the Carrier in the Med, etc. You need to get that in your heads right now, Bloomberg. The latter two options result in an immediate full strategic nuclear exchange. Option 1 looks weak, and will indeed lead to more tactical nuclear strikes, until Ukraine surrenders, but that is our best option left, which is why the Maidan was such a bad idea, which is why Nuland needs to be held accountable for leading Western Civilization down the primrose path, in the words of Dr. Mearsheimer, who is suddenly looking a whole lot more right, isn't he?
Russia is huge their bombs are on average over 40 Megaton compared to our 2 Megaton. Systems like SARMAT can carry over 16 of those warheads. The Russian could turn us all in radioactive dust.
The danger is essentially the difference in mindset between the west and Russia. The west has a lot to lose. Putin is being pushed into a corner where me may feel he has nothing to lose. He did once say, some years back that although a nuclear war would be catastrophic for humanity, and must be avoided, what is the value of humanity if there is no Russia.

There is only one option here - the First one. Let me explain: 1. Option 1: NON-MILITARY RESPONSE: (The only viable option): Try to rally the world against Putin. Very hard to do because 80% of the world is tacitly supporting Russia, and whatever means to victory they may pursue will likely be blamed on NATO. 2. Option 2: CONVENTIONAL MILITARY RESPONSE: Any conventional military response will end up going NUCLEAR. Putin has made it clear that Russia cannot fight against 30 countries (aka NATO). Putin: "We will all be martyrs in Heaven." 3. Option 3: NUCLEAR RESPONSE: Biden is not drunk enough to put Washington, NY, CA and the rest of the U.S. on the chopping block. We have so much going for us to invite our total destruction. This is settled since the 60s. 4. Option 4: REGIME CHANGE: Russia is not Iraq. And wishful thinking is not necessarily reality. How do you start regime change after Putin would have demonstrated his willingness to use WMD. Mind you after he uses one, he will continue to do it until Ukraine surrenders. And Russian forces will be in Europe (on the border with Poland et al). Besides, every country in Europe, especially the Baltic nations, will then know that Washington is not going to defend them with nuclear attack on Russia. This will diminish U.S. coercive power in Europe. EU countries will likely start trying to be on the good side of Russia, lest they be next. ----------------------------- KGeeB Putin knows all of this better than you and I. With all the warnings, and nuclear blackmail against Russia, Putin knows where the U.S. will stop. Even if Ukraine uses nuclear weapons, God forbid, Putin will hold the U.S. responsible and retaliate. So there is no way the U.S. will introduce WMDs in this theater. We'll do exactly what we've been doing - Sanction. We'll probably sanction every pet owner in Russia and their pet.
We a delusional when we put too much emphasis on Putin using nukes to save his own life. We discount the fact Russians voted him to be president because they knew he was and is the only one that could confront the West in its quest to destroy Russian power. After the Soviet Union collapse we could have helped Russia economically, but we chose to look the other way when they came to us seeking help. We continuously expanded NATO a military organization after the Warsaw Pact dissolved. Who did NATO led by the United States think they needed to fight? In 1963 when the Soviet Union put nukes in Cuba 90 miles from the United States we did not tolerate it. Nuclear war was adverted after Kennedy and Krushchev agreed we would take our missiles out of Turkey and they would take their missiles out of Cuba.
