I know it’s gouachey, modern and very illustrateish, but I love it! I love the flat fern over the shimmery background. The mushrooms are a deadly delight. This reminds me of vintage German children’s book illustrations. Very lovely!
Thanks for putting so much effort into creating all this content for your viewers and the art community. Can’t imagine how busy you must be. Another great fun SatChat. Hope you got out for that scenic drive and wishing you a great week. Have fun with your pottery.
Thank you for sharing this tutorial with us. I always enjoy watching your videos. You seem to always not be too afraid of experimentation and go with the flow. Pun unintended lol. That is something that I have learned from you. It's just a piece paper and some paint. I know it sounds simple but I feel a lot of people including myself that I'm scared to "ruin" my paints, paper and other supplies. I need to just use what I have and be happy with it and if I make crappy art I can put it aside fore to look at later or throw it out. I've tried to keep myself from tearing up my "art" and throwing it out because I have kept some of my pieces that I thought were just terrible and found them days or weeks or longer later and realized wow it wasn't as bad as I thought. That then gives me more hope that I'm doing better and then I want to continue working with that medium. So thank you for all you do. Have a great day! Also, tell the girls Happy Birthday ( I know that it's now belated but Happy Birthday at anytime is always appreciated). Hope your doing as well as you can with all the kiddies off doing adult stuff. I'm not sure how I'm going to handle mine going off. Right now my youngest aka the baby is in 5th grade like...... whaaat? She was just 1 a week ago! Ok I'm going to stop lol have a great day
I love how you artists can see what your paints want to be when they grow up... I just see a pretty shelf collection/dust collector but I still buy them! 😂😂 And imagine being able to draw whatever you want to paint too.... **le sigh** oh, well.....one day... maybe when “I” grow up! 😂😂😂
What a fabulous video, and a beautiful card. I enjoy watching your videos, though I don't comment much. Just wanted you to know your videos are always very uplifting, positive and very easy to follow along. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.
Lo e these mushrooms! I would also have a hard time finding use for these hues. Schmincke Akademie launched a 12/24 set of tubes, all pastel colours (and neons, for contrast, I guess 😂) White Nights also launched a whole series a couple of years ago. Maybe these turbulent times call for "chilled out" colours to help us relax a bit? I think these colours would be great for cartoons or Kawaii kind of illustrations. As always, fun to watch. Thanks Lindsay!
I love bright and bold colors but you did a great job making these pastels shine! The color shift in the mica paints was fun to see, it's similar to what the Rockwell Magic paints are supposed to do. BTW having an awesome time playing with your brush set, it's the perfect assortment of shapes and sizes.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you for this information! I did more research on Rockwell and found very little...they state they are a 'supplier' of art supplies which implies they don't manufacture their own. I noticed the similarity between their Magic line and the supervision but hoped it might be a bit better (based on some reviews I've seen on supervision). Long story short, thank you for saving me $$$, I've changed my mind about buying rockwell. Now, can you talk me out of A. Gallo? 🙂
@@patriciadickerson6628 😆 I have not tried those. They are expensive beacuse they are handmade and can't keep up with demand so the price will stay high. Im sure they are good but I don't want to fall in love with such a pricey paint (and also I don't want to buy it and be dissapopinted cuz it us so spend.)
That turned out so pretty! I like mixing muted colours but I'm not a big fan of these muted palettes, but I can see how they could be of use now. Happy birthday to the twins!
21:30 I love the atmosphere of the image. It is lovely. I'd probably stopped just around there, using a heat tool to dry this corner and added the last missing leaf in the lower right corner. I'm sitting on the edge of my seat now and wonder if you manage to add more umpfh or overwork it at this point. To me, this is like watching a crime show. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜〽🎨
Love it! I have bought A6 blocks of watercolour paper 300g/m At the moment I am experimenting with the stash I have! AND I have loads! As it is autumn I am drawing/painting autumn ! Autumn is a beautiful time ! Summer colours are short lived but autumn really is my favourite time with regards to being arty! and appreciating colour!
These colors are so pretty and you made such a lovely painting with them 😍 I’m really into pastels and granulating colors right now but not as much with the metallics. Though I’m sure in several months I’ll be back to metallics 🤣 their “high grade grey colors” are very tempting
Wow! This is such a cute and quick work of art! I am a sucker for pastels, mushrooms, and grungy textured backgrounds so this was going to be a winner for me. I love it.
I enjoy your pastel take on watercolor mushrooms….I think I will get out a favorite WC pallet, grab a titanium white, and work on color matching your pallet here. Time to work on my mixing skills. Thanks 😊
What interesting paints. I love the granulation of the background juxtaposed with the almost flat pastel colors. I think if they had used about half as much mica, the paints wouldn't be so psychedelic, as you said. There is a TON of mica! The pastel palate does have very specific colors. Almost as if it's for interior design use. That plum/maroon is to DIE FOR. I have a palate of pastels from Prima that I want to use now. Thanks for the inspiration!
I think going outside our comfort zone sometimes does us good.It makes you look at things differently..This has turned out beautifully.I think because the paints are so rich and creamy you mixing them as you went along worked perfectly.. I found the same type of problem with my metallic type paints too. It’s easier to blend when wet to get a better result. But the other paints you used for the mushrooms was lifting too.It must be something in how they are made. They are not typical watercolours they covered almost like a gouache. But I thought they look absolutely beautiful ,and you certainly got your story across perfectly..I love this ,but myself like you.I do prefer brighter and normal watercolours. Not much of a fan of pastel colours either….Love n Light 🥰
I'm loving how your painting turned out! The muted colors are so beautiful! Sorry too many comments, I need to learn to wait until the end of your video lol
Kim Crick's got a devastating review up on that Amazon page. Click into the 3-star reviews to check it out. Poor lightfastness due to unstable dyes, binder separation, tubes tend to explode if not used up within 12 months, and more bad news - but with ideas on how to mix your own versions that will perform better. That said, as always Lindsay, you worked in so many painting techniques while making a lovely little piece that I'm very glad I watched ever single minute here!
29:35 Ahhh shoot! My budget for art supply is maxed out. I love the way you use your new brush collection here and the contrast now is much, much better than at 21:30. I clearly would have stopped before the image was finished.
This palette of muted pastels reminds me of the art philosophy Vintage Pastels. I’ve had fun with those! I went into two trendy boutiques in downtown Littleton, CO the other day and every single thing in both shops was in this muted pastel palette! One was clothing & accessories, the other was stationery and a small array of journaling and watercolor, ink & gouache paint by number sets. Sadly the mica effect was nowhere to be found but in accents I do like it. Works perfectly on your mushrooms!
Oh, I just had to buy these paints, and I can’t wait to try your tutorial! Is there any way to tell what specific number paints you used in the background?
Hullo Lindsay, I did enjoy watching you create some lovely mushrooms. I am not sure these are watercolors? In spite of the name, It seems like just another way to market gouache! I believe any watercolor can be turned into a pastel paint and adding white makes it a gouache! If I am creating a pastel version of my watercolor paints I use more water and let the white of the paper come through to give a lighter brighter tone or color value. I know that if I want a wide range of gouache I will purchase Turners Design gouache, These were the paints I found time and time again when I was hired to do temporary work in different design firms. I did try the Turner Acryl Gouache and I found it to be just flat acrylic paint just like the expensive Golden So-FLAT paints! I have found if you want flat acrylic paint use matte medium you can mix it into the paint or just coat the finished painting! I have used it to protect my acrylic paintings. I have used it rather than varnish. Well somehow my string got pulled, I hope your doing well and not to bothered by my longish missive. Please take care and have a lovely day! OH Happy Birthday to you and your twins.
The big difference between gauche and the newly marketed "opaque watercolors" is the ability to dry down without cracking in a palette. I worked from these dry and they remind me of gansai tambi. But honestly, in use and final project they look the same
what a cool painting! I love the Chameleon Super Vision that you used on the background how cool are they!!? I hope I can find them on sale sometime soon! Thanks Lindsey!
I enjoy the muted colors here for the most part. I just can't spending the money on these sets and because I'm trying to be frugal decided here to challenge myself to create my own pallet of them. I'm keeping notes on colors used too, so I can more or less recreate them. I really like how restful the painting turned out.
So I am getting ready to move, and housing prices are just unbearable, 😔 so my budget is about to get tight, but I've been very fortunate to have what I do have. So I'm going on a no buy, except for paper. I can't stop buying paper. It's essential. However, I am experimenting with making my own mixtures, and its turning out really well. Titanium white watercolor from a more unique SAA pallette, mixed with whatever color to get my pastels. They look and react perfectly.
Happy birthday Lila and Maisy 🥳. Love the way the painting turned out 💛. I have a question for you Lindsay - have you ever tried adding powdered gum arabic to mica powder to make perfect pearls? 🙂 Briana
39:57 Depending on the angle I find this picture utterly ugly with a far too dominant honey brown left upper corner and way to busy brush with blue berries (I know you intended them to be flowers) and a complete failure or a lovely wood scene with a turquoise and slight ocker background who doesn't dominate the focal point, the mushrooms and even the blue flowers and those light wiggly branches don't overwhelm and distract as much from those lovely mushrooms, though I'm not exactly happy with the light mint and white highlights, they should get a soft beige/brown wash on top to have them less stand out and less alien to the mushrooms as something spilled onto the mushroom instead of intended as light reflections at least I think you meant this to be light reflections. Thank you for sharing. I loved watching it. It didn't disappoint. It had everything, delight and tragedy. 🥰 🖖✌
No matter how many times I read this comment of Silke it still comes across as utter gibberish leaning heavily towards rude. Some people 🙄…Lindsay, I absolutely love your sweet creative spirit and thank you for taking us out of the box with this one. I love it :)
@@cynthiaborden8333 Look at it at minute 35:46 to see what I mean. My guess the shimmer in the color is responsible for the color shift on camera. As for the white. It is too dominant, in my opinion. Though it might not be in real life, It wasn't when I saw it in the background on sat chat. As for rude. I'll take it. So I'm rude. I prefer an honest opinion to cryptic reading between the lines any day. And my opinions always come from the heart, regardless as they are perceived.
I saw "pastel" and thought, she's expanding to Wednesdays! in addition to pastel Tuesdays and Thursdays. But no, just pastel paints. I'm not sure if I'm disappointed though ;-). Pretty.
I like soft colors (as well as brights and earthies), and have art philosophy's decadent pies set, which I love, and would probably prefer their vintage pastels over this set. It's just too chalky for me. Thanks for the try out!
Caption for the card: "I feel like a 'shroom in the dark when you're not around!" Or: "You're such a fun guy!" (Go ahead groan, you know you wanna.) 🙈🤭
Thank you for your video. September is pastel month. Great. I did chalk pastels, oil pastels and now pastel watercolour, but will you be using pastel pencils and when you do please highlight what sharpener you are using. I am clumsy with a blade and all the sharpeners i have which is a lot dont sharpened chalk pastel pencil without breaking the point. Happy birthday to your girls. Thanks again
Lmao, so I tried this while watching you do it and.... it didn't quite turn out like I wanted it to... but I was using my prima vintage pastels and some hand made shimmering paints I bought from etsy so I knew it wouldn't turn out exactly like yours. I really need to work on my water control tho cuz I had alot of hard edges...
I agree. More for reproduction i think. Then again they are way cheaper than DS or Schminke granulation colors. I think they would be cheaper in China. Shipping has gone way up for them over the past 2 years.
I own and quite like these pastel colors (their colors are weak compared to other brands with pastels like White Nights or Holbein), however the metallic doesn't go well with it. Background needed to be subtle, using only the pastel colors, as the metallic overpowers the mushrooms when the paper is moved around.
