Electrical engineering can be broken up into various concentrations. The main one's I discuss in the video are power, electronics, RF, and controls. Students who enter into electrical engineering will all take mostly the same classes up until normally their 3rd or 4th year. By that time they take classes that are specific to these concentrations and subfields. The electrical engineering major can lead to many types of career paths in all these different fields so if you enjoy any of them, then it may be a good major for you. You will learn a little about all the concentrations but later on you should be able to pick which one you like the most. Most engineering majors have concentrations like this so be sure to look into specifically what you want to get out of a given college major and what career path will be best for you.

I am 64 years old and a retired industrial engineer. I am an engineer in title only having a degree in communications and a masters in English/English Literature. It was only in the last 10 years of my professional life that I wished I had sucked it up and gone the Electrical Engineering route. I learned so much from my EE counter parts and found I had a high acuity in the practical side of Electrical Engineering applications. Wish I had your channel in my early days. Keep up the good work. Thinking of going back in my free time and getting an EE degree. I know it's like closing the barn door after the horse got out, but it will give me a sense of completion. I will start referencing your explanations. Thanks again. Cheers.

electronics usually falls into 3 main fields of interest. Digital electronics, analogue electronics, optics and semiconductor technology. the first one is related to computer design and emypded systems engineering more than the others while the last one is more of a sceince major and usually involved in a lot of research.

I was planning to take business management (marketing) in college because when I was doing labs with wires I found it difficult and just decided I won't do engineering. However, I was having second thoughts of me not hating it but I was glad I learned something to give me an idea. This led to me wanting to take electronics engineering technology. I might take it because I still have mixed feelings where I'm passionate to take it and not to take it of how difficult it is and probably might not do well. Thanks for your videos you helped me give an idea on how I can approach my path. Yes I still have one more year to finish high school.

I always thought about being an electrical engineer. I worked in a TV repair shop at 16 yo in 1969. We had an electronics class in high school my junior year with only 5 students and 4 were seniors so there wasn’t a 2nd year. My grades weren’t that hot and the draft was going on so I enlisted in the Navy. I wanted to be a sonar tech on submarines like my brother 10 years older than me that was a Chief doing shore duty teaching in Key West. I got sent to avionics A school for 20 weeks where I finished in the top 10%. I ended up in a patrol squadron working on P-3s stationed out of Maine. At 20 years old I went to 10 different countries of which 4 months was staying in nice hotels in South America. At 21 I was running the night shift avionics shop with about 7-8 guys. I got out, worked hooking up electronics in submarines for a short time. Worked building jet engines for two years, quit and moved to Alaska. I worked in the oil field on the electronics used in oil well logging. We had different radioactive sources and types of detectors. We had tools that pulsed neutrons. We also had acoustic, resistivity, flow meters, temperature and even a listening tool. Did this for 8 years then went into telecommunications working all over Alaska and some overseas work. I worked along the pipeline delivering all types of data with fiber and microwave that had sonet output of 9 OC-3s. The microwave was supported by helicopters to mountains. My last 6 years I worked at a gateway earth station. I used to work closely with engineers figuring out problems. There was one thing I noticed about most of them and it was they sat in an office most of the day and they had a lot of meetings. Even as a tech I made over 100k my last 15 years of work. I had a job where I moved around. Heck I even used to snowshoe or snowmobile into gate valve building along the pipeline in the middle of the winter. I’d carry a fishing pole in the summer. Another thing about engineers is they are salary. My last job was union and with seniority job security was good. I’ve seen lots of engineers come and go because of a company’s changing environment. Technicians always have to fix or turn up circuits where after a big project there is always excess engineers.

Im in my 3rd year of electrical engineering, and never thought id say this, but im starting to have second thoughts. I love my classes and I love learning about new tech, but Im dreading a job where I just sit at a desk. I want to work in the field and do work similar to what youve done. For some reason when I entered school I didnt know that most jobs are in the office. I probably didnt do enough research. I still plan on finishing school because a lot of people are saying that its worth it because itll open many doors. But in the back of my mind I feel like itll be dumb to graduate with an engineering degree and then work a job not requiring education after all my years of schooling. Im just worried this is a "grass greener on the other side" scenario and I dont want to make any dumb decisions
@Chris_at_Home
@Chris_at_Home 7 месяцев назад
@@peterquill6097 I actually went to a technical college for a year. We even learned electron physics and advanced math. All the classes were geared to our field of study. We even had a technical writing class and a technical speech class. I did ok but was married with a son. This was in 76-77. I went in the GI bill after my enlistment. Engineering wasn’t for me. I was a good technician and the go to guy on many communications problems and planning. I didn’t make what an engineer made, but if you add my last 15 years income up it was about $1.7 million. Even in the 1980s I was making about $70k a year. Not bad for a guy that finished in the bottom 10% of his high school class.

Hey, I've watched a couple of your videos, and I've got to say that I really love what you're doing. The graphics, pictures, & animation, along with the priceless information, is definitely a double header. They're really helpful, and are helping me choose & plan my path in life (after highschool). Keep it up, I'm such that some people out there are being affected by it; and I'm sure that you already know that, but I just felt like it had to be mansion. I also wanted to ask if you could do a video on "civil" and/or structural engineering. It'd really be helpful. I'm trying to go into a career of animation & visual effects, so your videos on computer science were really helpful; but I've also had an interest in civil engineering, and things having to deal with it. With today's population growth and industrial growth, I'm sure it's in high demand worldwide, so I've been considering it as a second option. Again, thanks, and keep up the good work.👍👌🤘🖒👏✌

Also I would like to learn more about signals. Which sectors do use it besides GSM companies? It always seemed fun to me back in school but I've never seen anyone in real life dealing with signal processing.

I have always loved to disarm or break apart things to " fix it " when I was younger I used to do it but I ended up messing them up more 😂 But now that I'm little bit older i know a little bit more , like I fix my Ps4 controllers , I replace the joysticks soldering them and all that. And I like working on circuits , Is the electronics carrier something like that? To work with circuits and all that ? Idk if it's the Same but if it is similar or something like that I would switch my path. I hope you help me out Thanks

It's good to hear that these specializations now exist. When I graduated in electrical engineering in 1996, there weren't any sub-field study options. It was just one, amorphous program. Shortly after I graduated, they started offering electronics and power options of specialization. Now, from what I heard, there are additional ones in computer engineering. I can't necessarily speak to which is the best option, but my instincts tell me the computer option will be the most versatile.
@TheWindsofWonder
@TheWindsofWonder 6 лет назад
As a current EE student I can't really say that computer concentration being the most versatile is necessarily true. Computer Engineering has actually put itself outside of the EE world and is starting to become its own thing. They do not they do not take classes in discrete time systems, analog electronics, controls systems, communication systems, electric machines, or electromagnetism. IEEE recently changed their curriculum to have less classes on basic circuits and electronics(ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7344157/). However, they do take substantially more classes related to computer science. As a field, Computer Engineering is definitely starting to become closer to computer science than electrical engineering. Some universities offer computer and electrical engineering as combined programs, but most are starting to separate them. Electrical engineers that do want to work in areas related to computer engineering (at least at my school) like to focus more on embedded systems where they take classes like real-time operating systems, digital signal processing, and advanced digital design. Some of those get really interested in robotics and pursue classes such as digital control systems and mechatronics for their senior electives. For the more software and math oriented EEs, some universities are starting to offer machine learning related courses. Most are graduate courses, but allow undergrads to take them. My university offers Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, and Computational Intelligence for EE's interested in this path and have been starting to see more Senior Projects related to these fields. But we're also starting to see a mix of interests such as those interested in both power and control systems.There's power electronics that is a good mix of (by no surprise) power and electronics. But again, most undergrads with this field of interest take the graduate level power electronics course for their Senior Elective where they learn about the control systems necessary in power electronic applications.

I am already majoring in EE (5 year course , awards a masters degree along with the bachelors) I really enjoy Digital Design , logic gates and the like , and from what i looked , things like microcontrollers or embedded systems are up my alley But i dont enjoy electromagnetism & all the calculus (i think i can pass those , but i dont see myself being in RF/Telecomunications or Power at all) I do enjoy programming , and especially the programming engineers do What should be a genetal direction for someone like me ? As for math , i can do it , but i would prefer a non-math-heavy career after graduation , while things that inspired me to major in EE are VR , CPU/GPU architectures , Spaceflight (the computing & electronic systems inside spaceships or the ISS) I am asking for what should be the general direction i should take , when in the 3rd year of my degree i will need to specialize ... (computer engineering is a subfield in my university actually, the actual name of my major is Electrical & Computer Engineering , there is no "pure" electrical engineering course offered in my country )

Can you tell me something about Avionics Engineering? How different is it from Electronics and Communication engineering and EE?I am interested in working in the Aerospace industry and don't know enough to choose between Avionics or ECE. Should I take ECE with specialization in Avionics? Your guidance will help out a lot.Thank you

I'm really torn between power and RF. I want to develop renewable energy technologies but I also find RF to be fascinating. But also, am I correct in assuming that if I want to be involved in the development and creation of renewable energy technologies, then I should go with power? Or should I go with Mechanical Engineering instead?

I'm still a high school student and I really wanted to a Electrical Engineering so I still have many questions. When you gonna go to a college, you pick a one subfield to focus in your study right? And, do Professor gonna teach all the subfield or only the subfield that you pick?

Is it stupid to master on two or three subfields if you are given the opportunity? Is power better than rf if you love physics ? How is quantum computing connected with rf? I am currently studying electrical computer engineering entering my second year and i am a bit confused as i had a mechanics class ( Newton dynamics vibrations etc) and i am wondering if i picked the right major cause i just loved this class . ( I also was ecstatic about classes like digital design differential equations , semiconductors and calculus 2 and 3 )

Those honestly can both go well with controls. My schools clumps power and controls together as a lot of those classes complement each other well. Here's the electives offered there if you want to take a look. www.ee.calpoly.edu/tech-electives/
