I am an electrical engineer. Graduated in 1996. I have two cars: a 2012 Acura TL and a 2016 Corvette Z06. For the record, the two things I promised myself when I graduated engineering was that I would have a nice house and I would eventually have a Corvette. Dream achieved. :-) By the way, I am not attempting to brag. How you succeed in life is often more about how smart you are with your money. The sacrifices you make earlier in life pay dividends later in life. To drive the point home, the guy who owns the biggest air conditioning installation and repair outfit in my area never went to college, but is likely the wealthiest guy around here.

@jasminee6330
@jasminee6330 3 года назад
@@lou8047 If a house is one mil, you have to do the calculations and figure out what your regular expenses are per month. The usual rule of thumb is that you should be able to afford your one month mortage with one paycheck (assuming you get paid twice a month). Also have 10% in cash to maintain the house. so a 1mil$ house would be roughly 4500-4800 a month with a 30 yr fixed mortgage. ( assumijg you dont put anything down on the house) 20% is usually the norm. And a 100,000 savings... to be comfortable. So you would need 300k+ in savings, making at least 10k or so a month and managing expenses. This is all to afford a 1mil house comfortably

This video conveys the absolute worst message to people in their 20's. The last thing you should do in your 20's is straddle yourself with this kind of debt in a severely depreciating asset. I'm a software engineer and I'm proud when I pull up with the worst car in the parking lot. You will always be chasing money, never getting ahead of it with this sort of advice. Not to mention you suggest they can pay repairs and maintenance with any sort of raises they get. This is the wrong financial mindset.
@jorgemunoz4986

Deven Swiergiel straight up. People like this seek validation in objects and people’s view of them. Buying a new car is one of the worst things you can do. It’s better to buy a used car cash and use your money smarter. You pay so much for a car instead of investing in your own home or real estate? I don’t understand. I’m 22, I’m an engineer in the Air Force and I can afford almost any car I want yet I have my Toyota Corolla 2007 that I bought in college. I just don’t understand the way people my age think.
@torvasdh

@@jorgemunoz4986 Or, get this. They love cars and having a high end, performance oriented masterpiece is something they've wanted since they were 10 years old. God forbid someone buys a nice car. "It's depreciating you're stupid for buying it" Shut up. For a lot of people the depreciation doesn't mean shit because when you're finally driving it, you don't care. The experience is well worth the cost. It's fun and exciting to finally be able to say you have the thing you've wanted for over a decade. I'm 19 and have a 2016 Mustang right now. It's losing value. Do I care? Fucking no. I walk away from it every day with a smile on my face. I'm looking forward to my next sports car :) Some people my age spend their money on nice clothes, some on technology, some instruments, what ever. I don't judge them and neither should they judge me. I don't understand how it's acceptable to look down on people who buy expensive cars, but mean and insensitive when done to other things like houses or clothing. Feels more of jealousy than anything else.

@@torvasdh listen dumbass, no one said people are stupid for getting a luxury car. Please go and educate yourself on the concept of "context". If you think thats okay, by all means go get that stupid car that you cant seem to be happy without. I grew up around lots of upper middle class people who were stupid with their finances. If you are getting a car loan for 6 years that is a huge mistake. The maximum car loan should be no longer than 3 1/2 years. They will maximize interest after that on your total payments.
@nicetoeveryonedontpushit3090
@nicetoeveryonedontpushit3090 7 лет назад
ThingsToDo Yeah, but you do not necessarily have to give the minimum each month. I would use 6 years as a safety feature because if employment ends or comes to a halt due to health issues I would rather have a $200 payment per month due than $500-$900/ month required MINIMUM. It depends on who will actually have the initiative to give more than the required minimum payment I guess. Otherwise I would agree--3-4 years max is the way to go. I would personally purchase a home with a $1,500 mortgage payment plus utilities a month than a car with those similar expenses if I already have a reliable car. As long as it is in the right spot because the $1,050 going to rent already would also go to the mortgage so technically it would be $500-$800 a month for mortgage and I'd still get to purchase a car if I needed it or wanted it.

Car loans can make sense if you consider opportunity costs. If you qualify for a loan at 5% but you think you can yield 10% from investments, it makes sense to finance the car. Taking out a loan could give someone enough breathing room to contribute to a Roth IRA which has annual maximums -- if you skip a year, you don't get that opportunity to contribute back.

paying in cash should be if you plan on keeping the car for many many years. I bought a car last November and am already thinking of trading or selling it. hasn't even been a year yet. thought about paying it in cash at the time but I was convinced by my shopping partner who was with me to finance instead. still might end up keeping the car but I have tons of money saved up that I didn't use to buy the whole thing in cash.

Skip the video. An engineer would buy the least expensive set of wheels which does the job. This person doesnt take into account Insurance, Registration, Fuel (Premium for premium cars), etc. You know this if you know an engineer - we are some of the cheapest people on the planet. Will calculate optimal caloric intake for the price when standing in line at McDonald's. Give me a break with 80k car. Only the Execs would do this. These calculations make me laugh so hard. How about spend $200 on a car payment for a used car and save 1900 every month? Retire early or invest. All things an actual engineer would do.

Based on his monthly gross, this guy makes a little over $80k/year before deductions and he is talking about getting an $81k car? I am an entry level engineer as well and on track to make $75k in my first calendar year which ends in December 2017. I currently also spend $1100/month on rent and based on his zip code, we both live in southern California. I would say we are close to being in the same boot. However, I definitely will not buy a $75k car on this salary though. I got a $20k car (a Mazda Mazda3) and comfortably spend $700 on car note. Anything more and you won't be able to save (I save $300+/month) or comfortably pay back any student loans you may have (I pay $500/month in student loans, although minimum required is $200). Buying a high priced car, even if you have monthly income to pay it now, will only mean you will keep paying for your debts much longer. I would love to be 100% debt free in 2-3 years so I can start focusing on buying a house and does not make any since to buy a car equal to my salary.

@imastudd
@imastudd 6 лет назад
This is for the people trying to decide their major. Before you pick engineering, here’s something to think about: if you finance one of the cars listed here, the rest of your lifestyle will be absolute bare minimum. Good work on the video brotha but there was no calculation for utilities, phone bill, STUDENT LOANS from getting the engineering degree, money going into savings and misc items like toilet paper, shampoo, hair cuts. Also, $1050 for housing in LA means you’re living a small room in an apartment with a few other people. Living in a shared apartment but driving around a $80K 5 year financed car with no income going into savings? Doesn’t make a lot of sense.
@RelearnMath
@RelearnMath 6 лет назад
I addressed your concerns in another one of my videos. In a nutshell, utilities are included in my rent, phone is payed by my company, student loans is $200 per month(yes forgot about these), 10% of my gross income goes to savings, misc items are very cheap since they’re shared among House mates. I’m no advisor, so I’m not recommending to do this, what I’m saying is that if someone really wanted to they could do it.

This video is showing what you CAN afford. Emphasis on "CAN", meaning able to or having the ability to. Not necessarily what you will get. You can completely settle for a car worth less than that. & On top of that, this is what you can afford AFTER budgeting for necessities like tax and rent AND budgeting for hobbies and things you don't necessarily need to buy, but things you just want. It's not like these are the cars you can afford if you scrap every last penny of every check for the next 5 years. These are the cars you can afford post budgeting for a simple, comfortable life of your choosing. & I can't emphasize enough that this is just what you CAN afford. Like the top of the top of what is possible with this budgeting. You can get any car you want up to this peak price whilst budgeting for a comfortable life spending on other things.

You realize that this is a recipe for living paycheck to paycheck, right? That $600 you're using to pay "retirement" and "benefits" is a completely unrealistic amount. Plus you aren't taking into account the maintenance costs for cars in the $60k+ price range -- expensive cars tend to have equivalently expensive maintenance costs, so that monthly payment is nowhere near a realistic approximation of the true costs. And have you seen what insurance costs for cars at that level for drivers of your age? Be a real engineer. Analyze the real problem, not the one you think you have. Have a plan for when things go bad, like the car broke down, or, say, the economy tanked and now you don't have that entry-level engineering job anymore.

You could buy a base model 2014 s-class for less than $40k at this point. The best part is that they are virtually the same as the 2020 models since they are the same generation.

Plenty of fun could be had in much more affordable cars like Miatas, Mustangs or even a used Corvette. If you want a luxury car go buy a gently used 4 year old BMW 5 series or something. They depreciate fast and will still be nice cars.

How did you manage to make 450k in savings after 6 years of working? And also, where did the 0.1*(net worth) = max price of the car came from?
@kingayvaz

> 10% or less of my net worth. That seems reasonable for economical safety. Also having a large sum at your bank account would earn you a good interest. You would be earning money, by having money.

Isn't better to buy a car outright instead of using a loan?
@RelearnMath
@RelearnMath 6 лет назад
Patrick Z Yes but building credit is also important. What do you think?
@amit.verghese
@amit.verghese 6 лет назад
There are other cheaper ways to build credit score to that level. The cost of the interest paid for the 6-year car loan is vast vast higher than the cost of paying up front coupled with a credit-card way of building credit score. Better yet, wise rich people do NOT buy car on loans or buy upfront. They invest that upfront money, and the interest generated from the investment is what's used towards paying the monthly car payment. Ultimately, you didn't spend a single dime on that car - all that upfront money is still yours

Im an Entry Level Machine Learning Engineer working in DC and I'm only 22, dropped out of school to teach myself how to code and fortunately it worked out. In june I bought myself a 2017 fully loaded Focus RS which was 44K with a 6k dealership markup. You make good money, Im excited for the years to come and hop into the mid-level and senior positions. 😉

To clarify I dropped out of the University not High School, i'd say the answer is creating real world applications. Proving to a potential employeer that you have exactly what it takes to work there. Find your market and then the best tools(Languages, Frameworks) used at that moment and learn them as quickly as possible. Stay up to date and keep creating applications you know potential employeers will be interested in. I sucked at math, I was so scared to start ML because everyone was talking about understanding linear algebra and calculus, but it really is just repetition. If i can do it, literally anybody can do it.

Over the course of my career, I have been able to buy 4 Corvettes, a Porsche Turbo, and 3 years ago, my first exotic car (Lamborghini Diablo Roadster) cash......and have $100k set aside for another exotic.....I hope your message gets through all the idiot commentors that Engineering is a great field....good luck in your career.

I’m a computer engineer that recently graduated. I’m making around the same. Lol I can assure you, at this age what I can afford vs what I should see 2 different things. I use that extra money to save, invest and pay off loans. Life is bound to happen, it’s important we learn financial responsibility. Very good video tho👌🏾. I just want to make sure people have a full understanding of reality vs expectations.

I’m a software engineering contractor in the UK and I can tell you, that even though I’m on the highest bracket in terms of earnings I would never be able to save up for a super car, not to mention a house where this car would be appropriate. It all comes down to how you start in life, I started with nothing and £7k of debt after taking my studies. If I could live with my parents for a few years and my grand parents would’ve left me a house or a flat it would’ve been a different story, but if you need to build your life from nothing you’ll spend first 10 years just sorting out your basics properly and than you can start thinking about cars etc. I was able to afford and maintain an e46 m3 but for example a few years old GTR would be way out of my reach. But at least I really like my job :)

I make only $9000 a year, being arthritic. That's what the government wants to pay me to do. Capitalism is an absolute failure, and communism and socialism have their faults, too, but at least they TRY hard to logically optimize an economy, whereas capitalism is just an insane free for all random chaos. Capitalism assumes everybody agrees on what is, on cause and effect, on whether one person can cause something positive to happen. People cannot even agree on whether the earth is flat or not (it is obviously an oblate spheroid) or whether evolution is true (it is) or the moonlandings were real (they were) or whether oil/coal/gas resources are finite or not (they are) or how serious Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) is (it is mankind's #1 survival issue) or whether slamming bullets through people's skulls at 700kph has any negative effect on the proteins in their bodies, or whether weighing 500kg is positive or negative for a human, etc Reality has taught me to be as nihilistic and justified to do ANYTHING at all because of the stupidity of people. There is no such thing even as "illegality" or "crime". People cannot even prove THAT.
