Hygienist here! Tongue scraping is not a trend and necessary for MOST of the population, it is basically like this, if you brush the poop off your teeth, then you brush the poop off of your tongue as well. Maintenance of your mouth is all about wound care. we develop micro ulcerations and we have to keep the wounds clean in order for the mouth to heal. Flossing, waterpiking, brushing and tongue scraping should be a nightly routine for optimal oral health. I love your videos Dr. Dray-Cheers!
Teeth Talk Girl (dental hygienist on youtube) got me onto tongue scraping, and it's awesome! My tongue is a nice healthy-looking colour now. Not that it was terrible before (just to be clear, I didn't have a tongue condition), but it's much more pink now. Just don't over-do it at the start, be somewhat gentle (without babying it), and over a week or so it will cumulate and look much better. Not a "once and done" thing. Another thing that is never mentioned anywhere, is that a healthy visually normal tongue, will almost always still have white on the papilla. Don't over-do the scraping to try and make the tongue PERFECTLY pink with no white, because it's not going to happen. It just greatly improves it. Another thing is you want to get back as far as you can where the real build-up is. This will usually cause one to gag. A really good way to prevent that, is to close the back of your mouth with your tongue, as you stick it out as far as you can. Then the body doesn't freak out as much, thinking something will go down your throat, because it's blocked. After you do it enough times, you don't have to do that anymore (or I don't). I use the metal single-hand one like in this video, from Amazon called the "Basic Concepts". Metal doesn't have to be replaced every ~3 months and scrapes better (be careful). Is tongue scraping MANDATORY? no. Certainly has it's benefits though for oral health, bad breath, and just having a tongue that looks nicer than it did. Like at the end of this video, is tongue scraping always the answer for when you have white on your tongue? definitely not.
I get candida overgrowth when i eat too many floury carbs like bread, pasta & cookies. Immediately clears up when i stop. Tongue scrapers don't help but they're good for general oral health/scraping off the gunk (especially 1st thing in the morning) according to my dental hygienist 🤷
Thanks for this video. A loved one of mine developed sores on her tongue as a SE of her various Cancer treatments. It made it very hard, miserable to consume anything. Very important video. So important to be mindful of how oral health connects to other issues in the body, and mental health.
Metrotrexate has a side effect of causing sores on the mouth. I take it for an auto immune disease but im aware its used in much higher dosage for some cancers. Idk which medication your relative took but yes indeed...mouth sores are a side effect. Vitamin B complex helps.
Thanks!! I’ve had an annoying dermatitis at the corners of my mouth recently, which I had started to recognize as fungal. From your description I immediately realized of course it was oral thrush- I hadn’t realized we could get that at the lip commisures. As I started to think “I wonder why-“ you immediately mentioned oral inhalers! Of course I’m on a high dose steroid inhaler. 🤦♀️ I’ll start washing my perioral skin when I rinse my mouth after inhaler use! Thank you!!
Love this educational and informative video from Dr. Dray! I can’t be the only one, however, who was today years old when they discovered I HATE photos of peoples mouths and tongues!!! Definitely just listened to the audio for this one LOL 😂
Psoriasis is linked to Ankylosing Spondylitis. And if you have AS, many doctors don’t understand how to diagnosis it. Even though it is a common disease, people still end up with calcified spines from doctors not knowing their stuff. I have bad psoriasis on the tongue, perineal area, behind the ears, scalp, elbows. Also, my SI joint is affected. Doctors have taken makes X-rays and missed it. Now, I’m afraid my SI joint has calcified.
And that one person that points out our blemishes seems to be always present in the company when we go out 😅😂❤ for fun (man did it have to be him or her today with us 😅!). Oral hygiene is essential ❤ taking care of our body as a whole is pretty important and slacking comes with consequences. So incorporating healthy habits and making them in a daily basis turning them into a routine help us build a better lifestyle ❤.
I used to have a white film on my tongue, nothing like any of these things in this video, but just a general white coating. But I started using Xylitol gum after eating to help oral health and it's gone now.
Agreed! I typically agree with everything she says, but not this subject. My dentist, and my neuro have suggested daily due to medications and IV therapies. It is very necessary for many people when the symptoms are not related to yeast, etc.
My mom has been dealing with an awful issue on her tongue for over a year. No doctor seems to be able to solve it. Her tongue releases salt like crazy. She gets these gelatinous things on her tongue that release salt. Tried all sorts of antibiotics, antibacterial, mouthwashes, etc. no luck. Any ideas?
My white, severely painful tongue was finally diagnosed as burning tongue syndrome. I still have it after 12 years. It’s a neurotransmitter (nerve) issue. An ENT Dr. finally diagnosed it. Klonopin was a great help. There’s no cure. Now I take Lyrica due to other nerve issues & it also keeps it at a low burn. There are still flare ups so I treat the symptoms with Magic Mouthwash (Soothes & numbs) & liquid Dexamethasone (steroid that I swish & spit) that helps heal the sores & inflammation in my mouth. If all else fails & the pain is too horrible to bear, I take prescription pain medicine. Most drs will gaslight you on treating this painful condition, but there are good drs out there who will help. It takes a lot of searching.
I don't know your age, but this condition is fairly common in peri- and menopause. Body identical hrt helps a lot of people, myself included. I've had this for nearly 4 years. I still have flare ups, especially when getting colds and other infections as that impacts the efficacy of hrt. I'm trying out Alpha Lipoic Acid as of this week. It has been shown to help with nerve pain, and Faculty of Dentistry in Norway has done some trialling of this. It's only about 60% who have had good relief from ALA, though. Too early for me to say one way or the other, but hopeful so far.
I have it too. Years after menopause it came out of the blue. Thought i had thrush. Klonopin helps tremendously and ice water is great also. Stress also brings it out. I had it constantly for quite a while. Now it's off and on. I'm 61 now. Oral hygiene helps. Alot of negative things happen after menopause.
Something that helps that wasn't mentioned is rinsing and gargling with salt water after brushing, lightly brushing the tongue with salt too will get rid of bacteria. then rinse with clean water a few times
Someone with Halitosis kissed me and now I have the same smell in my moth and a white tongue and it doesn’t go away 🥴 Tried everything it’s so disgusting
@@SunandSunflowers I know :( I‘m embarrassed. And angry, it’s not my fault I brush my teeth twice a day and this disgusting man just kissed me out of nowhere.
Dr Dray, could you do a video on the new DermaV laser? I have rosacea and I’m getting the treatment in 4 weeks. I’ve had IPL before (painful) and of course treated with topicals with minimal success. My dermatologist said it’s brand new and is potentially the most powerful treatment for type 1 rosacea. I’ve looked everywhere for a good breakdown on how this laser works but no one is really talking about it yet! Would love to hear your thoughts and the clinical research behind this new tool for vascularity. ❤❤
I’ve had a chronically white tongue for what seems like many decades now, have none of the conditions mentioned here and just can’t figure out how to get rid of it. My excellent dentist had no idea, said I could scrape the tongue if I wanted to. I’m wondering if it could be a food allergy. My diet changed from high carb to keto, now carnivore for 10 months with no change in tongue. Ever hear of someone allergic to toothpaste ingredients, e.g. SLS? Maybe I’m allergic to cheese… so frustrating.
Hi Dr Dray, thank you for your great videos. I’m a younger adult and have had some noticeable candidiasis for as long as I can remember. I also have other skin conditions like eczema. I’ve never had a doctor say I should treat the candidiasis. Is there a reason I should get it treated? Currently I just vigorously brush my tongue with toothpaste which keeps it in check on a day to day basis.
Thank you so much for all the informative videos! I find products contain cetearyl alcohol sting my skin, I've been diagnosed with rosacea but haven't had a break out for over a year. I'm interested in starting including retinol related products as a beginner, but i found that cerave purple and bule retinol, neutrogena retinol cream, Avene RetrinAL all have it. differin and la roche posay adapalene don't contain it, would it be too strong for beginners? Do you know any retinol/retinoid... products with out cetearyl alcohol good for beginner? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks again! You're helping millions ppl out there! It's incredible!
Dr dray reminds me of dr. Drake ramoray from friends..... I love u so much❤ i wish i can meet u some day... I hope to be a successful dermatologist like u one day
I have geographic tongue and I don’t know how we can implant a genetically modified pig kidney into a person but cannot figure out what causes this weird little condition! And it hurts! 😅😂
I just brush my tongue with my toothbrush and toothpaste after my teeth. I don't have these issues listed, but my tongue gets stuff sticking around due to just daily eating and drinking.
After a really terrible wisdom tooth extraction surgery I lost feeling on half my mouth so now it's always like it's burned. It's so hard to explain because it's like burned but also a numb pins and needles feel. Then that also affected saliva production from whatever botchery that oral surgeon did. I can't taste anything on that side either.
Or tonsil stones. A lot go unnoticed. You can ask your dentist to check for you but if you have a gag reflex that isn't too bad you can gently poke the tonsil to see if a little pouch has stones in it. My dad uses a water pick to clear them out and it cleared up his bad breath. They are not due to bad dental care just some people get them.
LPR, Imbalance of good and bad bacterias in small intestine, sinusitis, tonsil stones. But if you have tried everything and still bb is not going then it's 100% from your gut or sinusitis
Greetings Dr Dray hope u r well n 🖐Hello Every1 n Happy Friday😀n what a Wonderful Vid…. thanks n This is Gonna b so Insightful🔥👍n Continued Blessings to All💜….
Do you have any info on a fissured tongue? I developed it after having my tongue pierced in my mid 20’s 🤦🏻♀️ Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I have a geographic tongue and so does most of my kids. It's an inherited genetic gene, and also never goes away as was stated. Plus, there is nothing a doctor can do to get rid of it, a person is born with it period. Plus it absolutely dose not cause pain or burning at all. It however, dose mean that ones taste changes quite often. Plus the look of a geographic toung changes as per the name (geographic). Sometimes they look round and indented like someone droping acid or lines which looks like a zebra. Also none of myself or my kids have type 1 diabetes or diabetes at all. Basically it's just a strange looking tongue that's all. It dose not come and go, it's always there just in different looking patterns. I'm 43 years old and was born with a geographic tongue my whole life, personally I feel quite unique having mine. I have never once heard from any doctor of these kinds of problems as was stated. Personally I feel violated by your video because your statements are inappropriate and inaccurate to say the least.
