The way it is in Pakistan - there seem to be only two things which csn happen - A modern version of the Russian/French revolution- where a lot of elite will lose their heads before things settle down or a Pakistani version of the Iranian religious revolution. The second is more likely. Right now tge political choice for the country is between the Sharifs, Bilawal Bhutto and Imran Khan - all petty men/women with inflated egos incapable of hard decisions or getting their hands dirty. Pakistan always keeps looking for miracle solutions while reality calls for sustained and boring hard work.

Pakistan is a relic of the Great Game. Pakistan and Ukrainistan are opposite sides of the same coin. But Pakistan is the first geopolitical casualty of the Great Game in Ukrainistan. The Anglo-$axons and NATO will try to bail out and prop up Pakistan using western taxpayers' money and call it the Islamic Moneybags Fund (IMF) because the Indus valley is surrounded by countries that are friendly to? You guessed it. Russia! Pakistan is the last piece in the geopolitical jigsaw waiting to fall under Russia's sphere of influence. When that happens a nuclear armed Orthodox Christian power will be able to project military power in the Middle East. In the meantime Pakistani generals and incompetent and corrupt Pakistani politicians and kleptocrats - who squeal and bleat as though they have a divine entitlement to western taxpayers' money - will be laughing all the way to western banks and tax havens. To add to uzair's math at 23:00 1) $2 B deposits by UAE (not fresh ones but existing deposits) 2) $2 B to allow MNCs to remit dividends which are currently blocked (he mentioned it later. 3) Delinquent payments to airlines and shipping companies for services already provided that they are complaining about (a conservative $500 M r Total?) 4) If we take $3 B of already existing Saudi deposits and Chinese deposits into account, why not consider the newly arriving deposits into account.

When you are saddled with an unproductive population, there is very little anyone, let alone the politicians who have deliberately tried to misguide the population to serve their vested interests, can do about it. Where are the industríalists with a big vision? Where are bureaucrats with a strong commitment to the nation? Where are the politicians who can think beyond vote and money? And most importantly, where is the public who can go to any length to protect the interests of their country? It's one thing to talk big and loud about the greatness of your country, and altogether different thing to do things that make your country great. All these discussions have been rendered just their entertainment value. The bottomline is, you cannot make brick without clay.
@bestofsatish

I find these conversations are irrelevant to the problem faced by Pakistan. Every country has debt. Indian, Chinese, other Asian has power, fuel, chemicals, food sector losses. But the difference between other countries and Pakistan is that they borrow on their own currency. Pakistan has $150-200bn US dollar net debt. Every year Pakistan needs $15bn in interest payment. Unless the discussion move towards how Pakistan is going to reduce the debt, they need to go to IMF every six months because Pakistan is repaying maturing debt by getting new debt. Already Pakistan has 6bn in IMF debt. why will IMF give more money when previous money given was wasted. The solution for Pakistan is to run current account surplus of 10% GDP per year for next 10 years. This must be their vision and mission. Unless the discussion moves towards how to achieve 10% current account surplus, Pakistan is headed Lebanon way. Lebanese pound depreciated by 98% in last three years. Pakistan rupee could easily see 10000/dollar within next three years. These are not even exaggeration.

It is clear that the PM has no control on his council of ministers and/or no clue about the economy. His team has come to the table completely unprepared, without any homework. They haven't prepared a worksheet that shows how to produce a surplus budget (which reassures IMF that Pakistan can repay the IMF loan). They haven't defined red lines for this negotiation. So now they just sit there, let the IMF team develop solutions from scratch, and try to stonewall some of IMF's proposals by kicking the can down the road. And they go out and tell the world that Pakistanis suffer because IMF is the arch-villain! Some melodramatic FMs have even declared that they will fight IMF tooth and nail. From the IMF's point of view, this must be the most frustrating experience. BTW no one asks why a broke country wastes 25-30% of its annual budget for defense (and also sponsoring terrorism across the border)!

Quite sensible, as 70-80% money directly or indirectly goes to their army only who runs businesses, buys real estate abroad or eats away money without paying taxes. At the same time this army only was fetching money in form of illegal arms, drgs, smuggles from afg or service to saudis, trade lives of jihadis for money etc. Basically the blood money in name of aid, loans, hawala etc. world needed them just because they don’t want their hands dirty - now situations changed, the one who funded them have other focus than Afghanistan - it’s Russia, south china sea and Iran in Middle East. If they get grant, it will be to fight Iran to stop on nuclear program or worst case mercenaries to fight n die with russia in Ukraine war. So, if they cut their army means they are cutting their earning source since 75 years n changing which may take some time but will be genuinely good for them in education n trade. What they can do - Phased wise cut budget on army Revoke dual citizenship law Stringent laws on corruption n steps as Putin did n eradicated in early 2000s same model Eradicate radicalism n focus education Land law reforms, agri focus Zero tolerance on terror n arms laws Planning commission kind of setup - immediate earning source can be focused agri, textile, tourism, cheap labor work In longer run develop msme, focus industries etc No religion based laws like blasphemy etc or education plan revived to teach them correct things, be secular n get rid of wrong narrative Secure deals with Iran and India which will ease there public, forget kashmir n give up fight with India, talk sensible on global stage than just same thing, which countries are fed up listening.

One additional reason gone unsaid as to why this time may feel different and worse compared to the 20+ other times Pakistan has gone to IMF: India isn't as poor anymore; the "hamsaya mulk" has seemingly managed to change its trajectory so that you can't take solace in the misery of the kufr and say we may be bad but others next door aren't much better, if not worse, than us. India's comprehensive national power has improved in the last 15 years even as Pakistan's has gotten worse. Even Bangladesh outranks Pakistan on many socioeconomic indicators.

Pakistan has had long history of mismanagement, but the country's geography is the worst in terms of economy. Bangladesh grew because it had easy trade with India, India grew cuz it had political stability and huge market, good policies were carried on for years. While in Pakistan political stability is yet a dream after 70 years. Pak can't trade with Central Asia which is a huge market of 100 billion $ cuz of Afghanistan. Iran has sanctions, India is an enemy. Who's left? China? The agreements with China is partially realised cuz of political instability.
