Anming, I have a question for Katie- "I am bi-racial (black Hispanic/Anglo mix), which is fairly common in the US. But in Japan, are bi-racial people less common to find? Has being bi-racial caused any issues with acceptance from others?"

I speak 3 languages, 2 perfectly because those are my 2 native languages and the 3rd is english. I'm also fluent in English now but I still have an accent so that's it

I guess it really depends on where you live when you grow up. I'm Dutch, and I'm fluent in Dutch, English and German. However I have family living in Switzerland and my nieces speak about 6 languages fluently.

@fjf sjdnx you have to remember that Japan is mostly homogenous so they don't have to deal with this problem much, and is heavily based on the honor system. Most people take this "suggestion" to mean they have to choose (eg. The covid "lockdown" in Japan was also done like this, and they had no enforcing power other than to keep making announcements to stay home as much as possible), and I'd say most people do end up letting go of one of their citizenships. However, to reiterate, there is no set penalty, and they cannot legally force you to choose. Several of my family members as well as friends have dual citizenship. We pay taxes in both countries so there really is no point for the govt to pressure you to choose. I mean they may lose a citizen if they do. To elaborate on my example, Japan was forced to make a statement regarding Naomi Osaka playing for Japan, and the govt made a public statement "allowing" her to keep her dual citizenship status. In the end, she gave up her American citizenship for other financial reasons, but the point is, even as a public figure, she was able to keep her dual citizenship if she so pleased.

Japan may be developed, but their politics and laws are not even close.

@@SMISpride the US also makes it extremely hard to renounce your citizenship and they try to "punish" you if you do. I can't remember the youtubers name but he lives in the UK and made a very educational video about it.

So as long as you pay taxes in both countries you can retain your dual citizenship, without repercussions, and say that you’re thinking about which one you’d like to keep. That’s how I’m understanding it

Well, its pretty hard to make it as a dancer in US, even to be teaching and she probably have more opportunities in Japan. Plus its a better place to live in to be brutally honest. If I had to choose between US passport and Japanese, I'd chose the latter in an instant. You can still go to US with it and not as limited as the opposite.

You should check out the channel black experience in Japan. They’ve done a few videos on the subject. Yuta did too.

Japlish is common (nobody says Japaglish) but countries with an official language body like France and Spain strongly discourage it among the educated class. I’m a basic white guy, American; and my wife, now a US citizen, is a native born Mexican and polyglot Spanish teacher. But Spanglish is strictly verboten! (Especially in my house! My kids better not mix both languages in one sentence if she’s around!) It drives her nuts and all the other Spanish teachers I know as well. They speak Spanglish in the streets, but it’s actively discouraged in the classroom. The Japanese will borrow just about anything from any language or culture that suits them, and don’t give a lick if you borrow from them-whether language or style or clothes… there’s no whiney cultural appropriation Tik-Tok police there!

They weren’t just “stolen” from, they were wholesale plundered by the Spanish, French, the US sort-of, AND their own people. And my wife is absolutely pan-cultural. And a truly elite level teacher who staunchly loves her craft and her students, as well as her adopted country where she’s been a citizen for almost 20 years. (so you better not let her catch you disrespecting her as a teacher, ‘cause she’ll give you a good ol’ American red, white, and blue historical punch-in-the-nose.) Just no Spanglish in the house.

I wonder which country pays more taxes and benefit contribution (retirement, health, nuclear survivor fund etc). But Japan would have better health benefits for sure.

So even keeping the US passport as a second one might not be so great in the end. " This should be clarified, it isn't just holding a US passport, it's holding US CITZENSHIP. It's the same exact thing that the UKs' Boris Johnson had to sort out in the last few years... where he had to pay the US substantial back-taxes. To truly get out of the obligation you need to submit forms to the US gov, and be paid up on what the IRS thinks you owe in tax. Otherwise the IRS will continue to treat (ie TAX) you as a US citizen, regardless of whether you hold a passport or not.

This is so true. All the American expats that I've meet in China complain about paying taxes. It takes a good chunk of their salaries.

Raspberry Biscuit thats not really true, yes you have to still file a US tax return each year with all your world wide income, but there is a Foreign Earned Income Exclusion - that means you don’t actually pay any double tax on the first $105,900 you make each year... so really there is no actual double taxing for almost anyone. Its just an extra paper to fill out, but it’s also in your favor to do it, because otherwise expats get screwed once you retire and they count how many years you worked and how much you earned, to figure out your social security payments. The more income and the longer you report you worked, the higher your retirement will be. On the flip side, if you work two years in one country and three years in another, and six months in the next etc, you end up getting screwed on retirement because no other government is responsible for you. So you’d end up with some tiny minimum amount or nothing at all, and you really dont want that

Of for the love of god, unless people are being referred to in a continental sense, no other county in the America's has "America" in its name. As well, usually the name for you in the country sense is based on the only or last word of the countries name. Calling people from the USA "American" when referring to nationality makes perfect sense and has nothing to do with American thinking they are special. Also - if we are speaking in the continental sense, then you are their North American or South American.

People who live in the USA can be from anywhere, only citizens can be called citizens...but you are mostly correct.

I am half american half spanish (spain) and the thing is you never feel like you belong to either but at the same time you belong to both. You don't feel more of one thing because that would be exluding the other part of you and your culture.
