i actually really like this style. we follow one primary character while also seeing how the others play along in the plot alongside them.

Your Character Alignment for the KFP series really gets onto a point that other video essays either don't grasp or just skim over: Kung Fu/Wushu, as a philosophy, is ultimately about the excellence of self. It is not trying to make a person the best warrior or hero who ever existed, it is trying to make them into the best version of themselves that they can. After this the practitioner just tries to make the world a better place in some way, be that trying to make the next generation better than this one or some other more tangible goal. It really takes the idea that you can't really affect and change the world if you do not understand and "master" yourself first. The KFP series has its plot and themes based on this philosophy. That is why (good) teachers in the series don't try to force a student into being X (insert result of your choice for X), they just help them better themselves. And failure is an important thing to experience to reach that goal. It's also why the true masters of the franchise don't really change who they are at their core over the course of the films. Po does become a warrior of legendary skill and a teacher over time, but he is still a person who fanboys over Kung Fu, likes to better himself, indulges in simple pleasures, and wants others to also better themselves. Oogway has changed a lot from his time as a warlord, but as a master he is most definitely not an omniscient being of zen. He is honestly quite goofy all the way through, and this in no way detracts from his skill in Kung Fu. Honestly, knowing and accepting his personality is probably part of how he came to be a legendary master in the first place. Quiet a few people don't expect such a deep perspective and philosophy to be communicated in the KFP franchise, either because "its a kids movie" or because they just don't expect any "big budget" film to be so deep. This is a shame, as they are missing out on the actually really deep themes with their viewpoint. The KFP franchise as a whole really deserves to be more highly regarded in its storytelling and cinematography. I think that this format of Character Alignment videos, with a focus character and summaries of other characters as they become important, works very well, and would be a good way to make these going forward. And remember that at the end, you and your physical/mental health are more important than making entertainment for us. Take as long as you need. And if you are ready to come back full-time, then we are here to support you.

I like how its implyed that Kai didn't lost because Po's chi was "too much" but rather because Po gave it willingly. Kai had only taken it by force, and it is established that giving chi have some healing/purifying properties, so he kinda purified Kais evil spirit? Its just my take.

I'm suprised you didn't at least mention Kai's theme which is the best out of the three villains themes.

I like how, that Poe is Chaotic-Netral to Chaotic-Good by nature, but his training is trying to pull him towards True-Netral.

I still consider Po to be Chaotic Good personally, yes he is impulsive and all but that's the chaotic part, in general he hates evil and will go out of his way to help people and as I believe the PHB states good means helping others according to their needs, and Po would never work for or cooperate with pure evil so I would land him at CG. Don't get me wrong love this series but there are some flaws in taking it scene by scene to land at the conclusion of alignment. Just my thoughts on the matter. in more brief terms: Given his general attitude and outlook on life I would call Po between neutral good and chaotic good. The rest I say are pretty spot on however in my humble opinion

My hot take on Tai Lung - Lawful Evil Tai Lung has dedicated his life to self improvement and self mastery; to be the best. This puts him as Lawful for the exact same reason Monks had to be in earlier editions of D&D. Evil isn't a question. His devotion to his pride regardless of what cost he exacts on others is quite clear.

Depression, dude it hits hard well done for caring for yourself.

Woah, okay. That's a bit more than I was expecting. Well instead of my usual comments that give long explanations for why I think something I'm just gonna list them, also I'm only gonna guess my favorites. Po, Neutral Good. Ti Lung, Chaotic Evil Uh, Bird Villain from second movie, Lawful Evil Shifu, Lawful Good Goose Dad, Neutral Good Bad Guy from 3rd Movie, Neutral Evil Note that it has been awhile since I actually watched any of these movies (and I've only watched some episodes of the show) so the only guesses I feel confident about are Po, and the big bads from the movies.

The 3rd movie made me laugh so hard, It was during the scene with Po and his dad in the relic chamber. That was so funny I was riding that high for the rest of the movie. That was a nat 20 scene to me for its sheer comedic brilliance. That being said, I agree that KAI was was not as good a villain as the others. That's not to say he wasn't a great villain, he really was. He fulfilled his purpose, And did it well. He just followed Shen… who followed Ty lung… that's not easy to live up to. I saw the 1st movie just before the 2nd movie came out on video. I didn't see the 1st movie initially because somebody I was close to told me it wasn't worth it. (Needless to say I take their opinion with a large grain of salt now...) When I saw the movie, I was really impressed. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, and then I asked my friend who had seen the 2nd movie who the villain was. She told me it was a peacock. I wasn't impressed. Boy did I realize how wrong I was…

Thanks to your videos I've been working on a homebrew rule to turn alignments into an achievement system. I've made grids based on your chart on a magnetic board, use colored pieces to track player progressions & am still working on tieing feats & other rewards to it. This would be so much easier if I actually DM'd or my party & DM were even slightly interested

I honestly like Kai in that he is the only villain to take Po’s ridiculous and silly nature in stride. That one scene where Po recites all his titles and Kai is , genuinely, appreciative of it always gets me. Like “I put a LOT of effort into getting these titles. I would like at least ONE PERSON to say them, please.” Later on, when the village is fighting back, yes, Kai is irritated, but he is also amused and intrigued. Like “seriously, he expects this to work?”, which then transforms into “WHY IS THIS WORKING?!”. Also he is an interesting villain in that, unlike Tai Lung or Shen, there was no lesson to try and impart on him. He is not someone to be taught anything. He is evil. There was not going to be ANY negotiation with him in the first place.

Fitting role for po. "The black and white being that leads to balance" while I probably butchered that quote it does fit, he's a embodiment of Ying-yang by seeing the balance of everything, even being goofy as fuck in a serious moment and knowing when to flip that script.

When the 3rd movie came out I was in a Martial Arts Gym(Muai Thai specifically) and we all went to the local cinema and even performed to promote the gym and the movie(I think that was the reason I was like 11 there). At that age I wasn’t really a fan of the franchise because most of the jokes didn’t work for me but appreciate it now a lot.

the reason why kung fu panda 3 works where others don't is because the story had a clear plan and direction and they stuck with it as they told the story they wanted to tell, and not the production nightmare that was starwars that shall not be named.

I'm gonna start him off at chaotic neutral leaning true neutral because that's just what I think he is. At the end of the first movie, he is easily Neutral leaning Chaotic Good, and same with the second, and I got Neutral leaning Neutral Good at the very end. Po's character arc is one that is quite interesting, and I definitely relate with his character (both of us being ENxPs and eating our feelings away). Mad props for Po, I love him, Nat 20 character.

my biggest issue with KFP3 is that implies that oogway took an interest in Po because he knew about the panda's natural prowess in chi. This is in direct opposition to the core theme of the first film, "there is no secret ingredient". Po was chosen by blind luck, and became the dragon warrior through personal and internal growth. Oogway "going with the flow" and making the choice that the universe has clearly made for him rather than impose his will on the universe is clearly aligned with his philosophy.

I’m a major fan of Kung Fu Panda, it’s my favorite Dreamworks movie series, Po, Tigress, and Crane are some of my favorite fictional characters, and Ping and Oogway are just plain funny.

They could of made Mei Mei more serious considering her skills with the ribbons but she was made into another joke with the other pandas

I REALLY hate to wade into this. Because arguments about alignments are silly, not least because most younger players of D&D don't really understand alignment. Alignment isn't about personality. Alignment isn't about feelings. Alignment isn't about isolated actions. Alignment is about what side you are on. Gary Gygax took the D&D alignment system from Poul Anderson's 1953 novel Three Hearts and Three Lions, and Michael Moorcock borrowed Anderson's concept of alignment as well for his Elric series of stories. Read the description in Basic D&D or 1st ed carefully and you'll see it is really about what a character does and thinks in light of the code of conduct or way of life -- alignment -- the character follows. Gary flubbed it in places by being wordy and verbose and creating some confusion but really, that's what it always boiled down to, as any grognard from that era can tell you. That's why orcs are always chaotic evil -- that's the side they are on, and they will conduct themselves in accordance with that ethos. Only humans and demi-humans get a choice, and the world of humans and their demi-human allies trends towards law and good. Given what we know of Po and the Furious Five, they are ALL Lawful Good. Lawful Good people can be flawed. Lawful Good people can fail to live up to their ideals. Lawful Good people can make wrong choices, but they remain Lawful Good, because that's their code of conduct, that's the side they are on. They can also be funny or serious, kind or stern, humble or proud. Po, Master Shifu, and the members of the Furious Five all seek to protect and defend the peace and good order of their people, and their actions are guided by the need to do this, whatever other motivations they may have. They are classic heroes. Po is Lawful Good from the beginning; his dreams are dreams of being a great hero in the fight against evil. He's not Chaotic at all. When he tells lies, it is because of insecurity and a misguided attempt to avoid disappointing others, not because he doesn't want good order or seeks his own good above the good of others. A flawed and imperfect individual can still be Lawful Good. So what about Tai Lung? Tai Lung wants to be the Dragon Warrior because of his sense of entitlement and lack of regard for others. He is the strongest, in his view, and strength is everything. He believes he has the right to be Dragon Warrior based on that strength, and is prepared to destroy everyone and everything that gets in his way. Even Master Shifu, who is effectively his foster father, is to be sacrificed to his raging ego. He kills out of rage and anger if thwarted. This video seems to miss that point for some reason; he's very much a representative of the might makes right school, and regards others as beneath his contempt. If he spares a life, it is for the purpose of causing humiliation and fear. Chaotic Evil. Lord Shen is quite different in his motivations. Whereas Tai Lung is a rage-filled destroyer, Shen is civilized and cruel -- but not so cruel as Tai Lung, who was prepared to kill his foster father, but Shen does NOT destroy the Soothsayer, and is clearly shocked when he hears that his parents died of grief after banishing him. Shen is a conqueror, not a destroyer. He is ruthless and genocidal, but whereas Tai Lung was perfectly capable of mass murder simply out of rage, Shen kills with purpose and calculated intent. Nonetheless, it is clear that he favors order and civilization, albeit also having a desire to conquer and control Lawful Evil Not Chaotic. Often, the best villains in media are Lawful Evil. They are also often the most dangerous villains. Trying to determine a character's alignment by isolated acts is dicey, especially if those acts aren't very significant and more so in judging actions in a comedy, where certain events or actions are really about a joke to amuse the audience. When it counts, how does the character choose? Tai Lung chose rage and destruction seeking after power when frustrated, even briefly, in obtaining that which he desired. Shen lusted for military conquest and committed mass murder to avoid the consequences of a prophecy. Po? Po risks his own life and safety to help others and protect the defenseless, even though he has every reason to believe that he'll fail. That's Lawful Good, all the way.

How are monkey and crane just neutral? They're obviously neutral good

I personally love all three movies, but I love the second one the most.

I would argue that Wolf Boss is True Neutral but skewed towards Lawful Evil

I think is interesting where the whole Kung fu master being a badass hero comes from, you said it was an Popular American depiction of Kung Fu... but it all, came from China, with the Kung fu movies, and the reason is because, because of all the World War 2 traces it left, China sufered a lot of assimilation from British and Japanese armies, cause they were considered an easy targets, so after all that, the stigma still stayed, that's why we have a lot of Kung Fu movies of one sole man, defeating an entire dojo. It was kinda the same reason why in america they created Superman, a powerful hero capable of defeating all the advercities that America were suffering during that time.

I don't know how requests are done (as in if they are plucked from comments or it's like a vote somewhere), I kinda like popping in when a game or character I find interesting is being talked about. Was wondering if you may consider doing something for the 3 Dark Souls games. (Only thing is some character views and motivations are hidden in item descriptions and other hidden lore) It'd be subjective in some parts and come down to head cannon in some places, but it seems like a series perfect for this show.

I love the scene where Po finds inner peace, but my #1 Dreamworks scene has got to be Hiccup realizing he needs to fly by instinct in the first How to Train Your Dragon Movie.
