The attitude was "that's just how it's done"; men buy ladies dinner and gifts. Not only is this unfair to men, but in accepting the gifts an expectation is created that something will be given in return, continuing the displays of affection until a formal relationship evolves. I was never able to be upfront with my feelings, so not accepting favors or gifts from people was a clear way of setting boundries. Lesson learned: Don't accept gifts if you do not intend to repay the kindness (that'd be rude), and don't encourage someone to believe they can buy your affection.

For sure, as a guy I've seen WAY too many girls just use men to get what they want or at least make the relationship tilted one way. Of course, my fellow men ABSOLUTELY need to clean up their act in some ways as well (such as their attitude and ESPECIALLY their language, for graciousness sake!), but I long for days when more couples actually cared about each other MUTUALLY and were willing to at least try to be there for each other whenever possible. Depends. When you were 14, would you have appreciated 21+-year-old men trying to open relationships with you? Because that's generally what happened when the age was lowered to 14 in 1823. Oh and before that it was 16 (with parental consent) and 21 without it. This resulted in parents getting involved in their children's dating life and "introducing" them to suitable (far older) men they felt would make a good husband. Of course, most women didn't marry until they were 16 (working class) or 18 (middle/upper class), but rest assured the relationships would start young to make sure the woman was thoroughly under the man's control. Oh and also no laws against beating your wife (once you were married, of course). These books leave out a lot of rather nasty details at he time, such as the above.

I mean,sure women were were still treated as "lesser" than men in a lot of ways...but in a lot of other ways,you'd hardly even notice with things like gentlemen rules and even at one point there was a law made that allowed woman to stab a man with a hat pin (keep in mind that these hat pins where HUGE) if they were acting "ungentlemanly" (read: being a flat out sexual predator). Sure women were seen as lesser,but in a lot of ways it was pretty comfortably so.

Great to hear. As a guy, here's another thing that I've noticed works over the years: DON'T start a relationship with flirting, EVEN IF you know the girl would enjoy it. One, it can look bad to others; Two, you want to be this person's friend, not just develop erotic feelings. Start with a simple friendship FIRST, if deeper feelings later develop, THEN do true romance stuff. You'll save yourself a lot of heartache and pain for both, OR know for sure they're genuine (would you love that person equally when they were 89 years old and full of wrinkles?). Of all the elderly couples I've had the wonderful privilege of seeing, I'd say 85% of the ones married 50 years or more began with this friendship, NOT with flirting. I’m not saying falling in love or maintaining a relationship is easy, but a pretty face and an outgoing personality definitely puts you ahead of the game. Some people struggle with personality or behavior disorders or are just quiet or shy in general. If it’s easy for you, I wish you all the best. That’s just not a reality for everyone.

I mean ignoring how Chelsea just being mean at the end, yeah, in history we just tend to see the bad side. Sure women had weird expectations...like only being allowed to shop all day, not talk to men and honestly, upperclass women sound like they had boring lives, but they also had some perks, being upperclass and all.

I have a lock of my husbands hair ties with embroidery thread ,the curl is inside a picture frame of him from the 90s , he had a much longer hairstyle back then. Young & so handsome ❤️

@@HeyLady2319 because photography replaced the practice. Not everyone one could afford to have a miniature portrait done to give to a loved one, but you could give a little bit of your hair. :)
