What Dating Was Like In the Victorian Era

Dating in the Victorian era in America and in Britain meant navigating through a fog of modesty, prudence, ritual, corsets, top hats, calling cards, and your inner voice feverishly whispering etiquette book platitudes: "There is no propriety in voluntarily prolonging your ride, with a young gentleman, till after dark!" "Nothing can take the place of true genuine manhood!"
Etiquette books were all the rage at the time, advising men and women on Victorian courtship rituals and what it means to be a proper lady or manly gentleman.

Quite the opposite, once you did all of the vetting on your potential partner you didn't waste time. Most high society girls and women would be married within 3 years of their debut into social society (going to events, dances/balls). That's where the term "debutante" comes from (not sure I spelled it right).

Let us know how to respect the Almighty Who sits on the throne of Heaven. Him Who is superior over everything. Using the name of God in vain mindlessly is disrespectful. It is holy. You can ask yourself this question, "Why do I take the name of the most Powerful God in vain to express an emotion?" The third of The Ten Commandments states, "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain" (Exodus 20:7). Using "Gosh" "Jeez" "Gee" is also taking the Lord's name in vain because it is an alternative word to not sound offensive. But it is still wrong as it comes from a Holy Name. "God" and "Jesus"

Watching this I realize my husband is a gentleman; he always makes sure I'm on the inside of the sidewalk when we're out on walks, he's very discreet so he doesn't kiss me when we're around a lot of people in public, he's never given me cause to be jealous (and vise versa because I very much appreciate and love him), and even when he was in high school- he didn't flirt with every girl he met. He's seen as old fashioned by all his friends and family, but it's why I love him. Dating doesn't have to be full of spiteful mind games and it's a great relief when it isn't! And the whole thing about overly flirting and how it lessens people- I've always agreed with that.

Same! My hubby has this adorable little 'grrr' that he does if I try and open my car door. Sometimes I'll start sneaking my fingers towards the door handle just to hear him do it. XD A lot of people have commented (quite negatively) on him opening the door for me, and both of us are in agreement. He doesn't do it because he thinks I can't open the door; he does it because he loves me. It's the little things that he does that many people deem 'old fashioned', even when we're alone, that he uses to show that he is paying attention to me and looking out for my well-being. And I try and do the same for him. And now, he's teaching our son to do the same at 5 yrs old. The kid looks so proud of himself whenever he gets the door open on his own (we have an older car with stiff handles). How could I take away that feeling of accomplishment and joy of doing something just like daddy, just because I'm capable of opening the door myself?

Great to hear. As a guy, here's another thing that I've noticed works over the years: DON'T start a relationship with flirting, EVEN IF you know the girl would enjoy it. One, it can look bad to others; Two, you want to be this person's friend, not just develop erotic feelings. Start with a simple friendship FIRST, if deeper feelings later develop, THEN do true romance stuff. You'll save yourself a lot of heartache and pain for both, OR know for sure they're genuine (would you love that person equally when they were 89 years old and full of wrinkles?). Of all the elderly couples I've had the wonderful privilege of seeing, I'd say 85% of the ones married 50 years or more began with this friendship, NOT with flirting. It's truly beautiful to see the love has not diminished after all those decades, and many call their spouse "their greatest friend".

remember some people dont want that, and there are no rules against it to do it the way you want, though it might require openly stating your wishes, or asking someone before a date if they would be up for it. i know it seems weird to try and 'dictate' how a date should be, but chances are the person is actually interested in doing it, too. its bad to impose a general rule on everybody like they did back then, not everybody fits into these rules or like how they work. today is fine, because everything is allowed as long as there is consent, and feelings and boundaries are considered. you can do it however you like it, if you find someone who agrees with it. someone could probably make a dating site or even role playing site out of it, if the need is large enough. maybe it already exists, i have not checked

These stereotypes are still prevailing among Indians and that's why I compared Indians and the people who lived in the Victorian era in terms of dating and falling in love. There are people out there who still follow basic courtesy. Keep your standards high and you'll find them. :) My hubby has this adorable little 'grrr' that he does if I try and open my car door.

I was taught by my parents to give the inner side of the pavement to a more vulnerable person, like an elderly or a child (even if only passing by). Of course, people were people, and weren't always behaving themselves. I've done some research for 1890--1910 . I found some articles admonishing young ladies to not have pictures of themselves taken in various stages of undress to send to their boyfriends, as the photographers always make copies of the pictures to sell in the saloons. I would say that would be the Victorian version of sexting. Naturally, there was a significant amount of illegitimacy as well. The papers of that era have numerous articles of Miss so and so charging Mr so and so with seduction and bastardy. At that time with no DNA testing or even blood typing, a man so charged would have to prove that he 1) didn't even know the woman 2) was nowhere near her at the time conception would have taken place 3) that he had been in the hospital or under doctor's care at the time. The main tactic was to smear the woman's reputation by getting several other men to come forward to say that they had had sex with her and that she was a loose woman. If the court found the man guilty he was usually ordered to pay $2 a month until the child reached age 18. If the child had already died, he was usually ordered to pay $100 to the woman for having put her through pregnancy, birth and death of the chold.

People these days are wild. I think these Victorian era etiquettes should come back to modern life. Nowadays it feels like manners only matter to women, men really don't care about women's feelings or follow basic manners. There is no proper flirting dating or anything, even a short single conversation with a straight male friend indicates signals for sex, even friends/colleagues ask for benefits lol. I sometimes wish I could go back to the times when you had to marry to have sex, ride a horse for miles just to have tea with the woman you love. Since it became way too easy to reach someone's bed, no one wants to marry until their thirties or at all. Today dating is a headache for religious or simply conservative women/men like me who want serious relationship which leads to marriage.

Hahaha... You don’t want to accept a gift from a guy at all. The angle is this: if a guy loves himself and has high feelings of self worth, being gentle, warm, friendly, jovial, and kind to a woman is ALL he needs to give. If men are mean to women, they are also mean to themselves, and if men are mean to themselves, they are also mean to women. Men that don’t believe in a woman’s love will gift a woman and feel low and angry. Men that do believe in a woman’s love feel happy! And men that do believe in a woman’s love are also friendly to other men, because they don’t see them as a threat. All men know this deep within, but people don’t trust each other and are always afraid. This is why love is strong - it’s a leap of faith and trust in other people. Fear, aggression, and anger is ALL doubt. So if a guy is buying gifts to get a woman’s attention, he doesn’t love you or love himself. He is too afraid. This is wise advice.
@OOBEJuanKenobi
@OOBEJuanKenobi 3 года назад
And also I have to say: accepting gifts from a guy you don’t know well promotes anger and low feelings (or hatred) between men and women. If men aren’t friendly to other men, avoid them. They will never be kind to you, either. If men think they have to give things to women to get sex (which is not the truth), they will always feel hatred. Love is always free.

Such a huge problem to do is men feeling “friend zoned” aka entitled to a woman’s body just because someone did a few niceties or offered kind friendship. I’ve even had a boyfriend in high school, that wanted or felt entitled to my virginity because he bought me lunch every Monday. I broke up with him. I do not accept things from people to this day for fear of having anything misconstrued. A gift means you expect nothing in return you do it because you want to. My body is not worth Japanese food no matter how good.

A lot of this advice really aged well. Naturally, others didn't, but generally, it's way more precise and useful than just saying, be nice, courteous, and honest.

Exactly All these comments wanting these rules back, and none realise why these rules were placed in the first place. Sure many are basic human kindness but a lot of them are rooted in the idea that women are men' property, who men need to win over as a prize. Also it kind of does injustice to the women, where they can't be the first one to approach a man.
