Even though Sam's death was the biggest reason why Henry offed himself, I feel like the second was everything he did for Sam, all the people that died because of his actions. The Resistance Leader, the doctor, all the people that died from the swarm. He justified his actions because he wanted to keep his brother alive. Suddenly, all the "evil" things he did, as he described, was for nothing. Heartbreaking

Ellie tying to use her blood was such a great move to make in this adaption. It unlocks so much more to her character. And it also added to the weight of Sam's death. Bravo.

I disagree. Ellie has at least two confirmed encounters with friends’ infection - Riley and Tess. There’s no way she would leave Sam loose like that overnight for him to surprise-attack everyone in the morning. Had she told Henry and Joe, they would’ve had time to face this situation. Henry wouldn’t be put on the spot to shoot Sam, which then broke him. It’s now on Ellie which doesn’t make sense.

@@eatandrun8020 Ellie at that point is still a kid. Just been trusted with a gun, she's trying to mature up, while still being a kid. It's what happens in Winter that changes her into what she is by the end of the game. This scene demonstrates the naive hope she still has in her. She did it to make Sam feel safer, she did on pure faith, she did it cause she has a fully empathic personality. I'd argue this scene is one of many catalysts that drive her to change into who she will be in Season 2.

Idk I like his line from the game more “This is your fault…THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!!” It’s like he was blaming himself for not doing a good job at protecting his brother but was channelizing his emotions through Joel.

For me, Sam being deaf in the live action was the best decision. In a limited time, it was interesting to see their relationship's dynamic in contrast to Ellie and Joel's relationship who can communicate properly and at ease, as well as seeing the idea of what it's like to survive AND have a disability in a post-apocalyptic setting. Their deaths were even more heartbreaking in the series

This wasn't their back story though. Sam was Ellie's age, wasn't disabled, and didn't have Leukemia. Henry left Joel for dead, and even blamed Joel for Sam right before taking his own life. But HBO made up a sob backstory for Henry and Sam to dramatize things, just like with Bill and Frank. Their mission seems to be making people cry in each episode. They've been taking a leaf out of Korean formula for dramas/movies like Squid Game and Train to Busan where no matter what the genre, the goal is make people cry because Koreans have figured out that crying = $$$, ratings and word of mouth.

smiling is actually subconciously used when a person is nervous as an emotional regulator1 :] I do it a lot too in situations where I'm nervous I'll smile, though the fact that he already knew what was going to happen and his partner didn't may be the reason too :) tho I do agree its super offputting when everyone else looks so defeated XD

Seeing this reaction really helped me realize why this scene hit me the way it did in the game. It didn't click for me why it was sad. You are coming to terms with Henry having to shoot his brother. You are still in shock and rationalizing what happened in your head that you are just not mentally ready for another hit. It's not the sound of a gunshot or someone dying that made these people jump. It was realizing it's not over.

The way some of them react when Henry gave a warning shot and some thinks he was gonna let Ellie die. But legit, what do they expect. He is witnessing and hearing that his little brother has become one of them. And was lost until he shot Sam. After that shot, he just lost himself and blaming himself for not able to protect his little bro. Man…seeing Henry just lost and confused. It was hard to watch him commit suicide. I just look back and all I heard is a shot as Joel screamed “Henry No!!” And Ellie whimpering meaning Henry just killed himself
