So, just because I know many will dislkie this take, I stand by it, you will get my unfiltered thoughts, even if you will sometimes disagree. I still stnad by it, this was one of the most tone-deaf and asinine things I have ever seen, though keep in mind it is just my opinion. If you liked it, all th emore power to you! =)

You're not wrong. I had the same reaction when I read the comic, and even stopped keeping up with it for years after this chapter. It really made me angry, and the people I knew who were also reading couldn't quite understand why I was so angry about it. Your reaction feels validating, so thank you.

you aren't wrong, i started reading the manga from somewhere in the middle of this season, when it was being released, i saw some jokes like this here and there, but they were cut out in the anime, so i thought the anime would take a more serious approach to it, which is completely fine. But then i saw this episode and it threw me off.

I think you overestimate different people's ability to remember, especially for situations like this. He was 6, the only ones with a bond with him or his immediate family and those on the ship. Those on the ship definitely told everyone what happened we saw that, but if you remember when leif told them "ill get him back no matter what" nobody really believed him, and Ylva cried for both of them and said that the men are gone now. They all just assumed he's dead, and went on with their lives. the people on the ship 100% stopped talking about it and maybe brought it up once or twice as a story, and people always forget those/ dont take them seriously. The humor might serve to contrast Thorfinn’s changed perspective with his family's unchanged, ordinary life, Either way everyone just assumed from day 1 that they died except for Leif, and went on like that for 16 years, Ylva was around 15 when we first saw her so thats already more than half her life. Of course she knows she had a little brother but thats enough time to pass for someone to be unrecognizable and coupled with Leif's every 3-5 years of random people as thorfinn stories and he brought back bug eyes as one, they probably thought the story where he met him that one time he was around 16, was just him mistaking someone for thorfinn again, not to mention 6 more years passed after that before we get this scene right now. Its extremely reasonable for people to forget people, and if they dont by stories, forget their facial features is extremely common if not all of them, since he went through puberty. and Ylva thought that thorfinn was just lying to leif too which added an extra layer People in real life don’t always respond to emotional events with the intensity or solemnity we expect; sometimes, they react in ways that are surprising, humorous, or even inappropriate. The show might be using humor to emphasize that life doesn’t always play out in dramatic, cinematic ways, and instead, things are often messy and awkward.

I know they have to be voted for, but I would like to recommend the following series: Overlord: * 4 seasons with 13 episodes each for a total of 52 episodes * 1 canon movie already out in Germany & coming this Nov. 8th in US/Canada AND Re:Zero * 2 seasons with 25 episodes each and 3rd season currently airing with 16 episodes for a total of 66 episodes * 2 canon movies AND Youjo Senki: * 1 season with 12 episodes * 1 canon movie * season 2 is in production but who knows when it's airing

I think you kinda misunderstood Ylva here. It's not that she forgot who thorfinn is, she really thought her brother died in battlefield or whatever because he was just a 6 year old boy, and it's been 10+ years. A 6 year old went missing for 10+ years, last seen with a band of pirates, anyone would think he's dead. That's why she thought that Leif made that story up about seeing Thorfinn in York to cheer Ylva and Helga up. Here she genuinely thought he was just a random dude who was impersonating thorfinn in order to inherit his family wealth or whatever. I agree, this was portrayed in a very comedic tone but her actions are kinda understandable in my opinion. It was after Helga confirmed it really was Thorfinn that Ylva recognized him. I get your point about it being jarring but calling it "shit" without even understanding her thought process behind it was a big jump to a conclusion, dont you think? But ofcourse this is just my personal opinion and I truly respect yours as well. It was really fun tho to watch you rage during the punch xDDDDD, i was laughing my ass off for 5mins straight. I enjoyed watching your reactions to this show, thank you

the content was not shit, the portrayal was. There is set up and payoff. Though here it was hjust set up and a middle finger. This show excells in meaningful charater moments and they pull this "hey, so funny" crap. Not my type of humor. :D I rage sometimes, though it iss rare :D

Ylva became the breadwinner for the family when Thors and Thorfinn both went missing, so she had to "grow up" faster than anyone should have to, much less a grieving child. She couldn't afford to entertain the fantasy that a young child ran off with their father's murderer and lived this past decade and a half, only to show up out of the blue on her doorstep. And to someone forced to "grow up tough," crying is seen as weakness, but anger is "tough." So someone like Ylva who grew up like that would struggle with a wellspring of emotion, and channeled it the way you see. Later on she is calmed down, so in the conversation after she's not as abrasive. She's every bit as much shaped by her experiences as anyone else in the show, even if I understand that you didn't enjoy what that meant for her character.

I have no problem with that, I would have loved them to portray that in the serious way it deserves, though. it kinda undermines those themes I think =(

Your sister recognizes you after 16 years because you are a grown up human and after 16 years your appearence wont be much different but seeing your child brother after 16 years as a grown up is a huge difference. That isnt an argument to get you to like this scene but the scenario you give is not the same i think.

The mother was always sickly and Ylva always had to help the dad with work, remember? After they disappeared, it's easier to accept one's situation and believe Thorfinn was dead and simply move on, since she basically had to take over Thors' job and take care of herself and her mother. Judging by the oldest son, she married Ari much later too. Also, one thing that's not explicitly shown was how Leif brought Bug Eye Thorfinn, so, him telling her and the mother and even Ari (who feels responsible for his kidnapping) that the child is still alive, brought hope into their eyes, but it's likely Ylva preferred moving on and accepting reality than have hope. Her prejudice or belief clouded the possibility of Thorfinn being alive hence, she couldn't just accept it. Also, she had just been scammed by a merchant, her mood was probably the worst. So, it's not really comic relief. It's like how you decided she's a tsundere and couldn't enjoy or see anything else but being a comedy moment, although it did cause real concert to Thorfinn. As for serious/comedy whiplash... well, Ylva is also Thorkell Grandniece. Someone did already mention to you a panel in the manga where Ylva cuts his hair and comes to terms that wasn't shown here (hopefully season 3 start?). I found that a real beautiful moment as it shows that Ylva took some time to really believe/realize her brother is alive.

Thats a shame, you seem to be really stuck on simple small things to the point that it effects everything else. When in reality it's really not as big as its made out to be in the mind. So many beautiful scenes shouldn't be ruined because a reasonable act that was in character from his sister. We saw how she gets over things and runs from emotion to distract herself.

No, I stand by it, it was ridiculous mood whiplash that suddenly turned a very grounded anime into a very stupid outing of anime tropes that were unneccessary. Weakest point of the anime by far for me, such a shame as well. But if you did like it, I am happy, I would have liked to love it as well. =(

@@storieswithstyle Its done similarly but with a bit more continued conversation between Thorfinn and his sister in the manga. She has always been a hot head (being the Elder daughter who is the head of the family taken over from her father) so her response was not too far off. I understand the break in tone but Iceland and his family dynamics always had this vibe. Also it was widely understood that a 6-10 year old child in the battlefield would have died for sure and the ones returning back to Iceland after Thors death did not know where he had gone since he escape suddenly following Askeladd. I was just hoping for them to show the scene with his sister cutting Thorfinns hair and they talk to each other. Maybe they will add that in the start of season 3.

That sounds a bit better. People have said they cut other comedic relief, which really did this a disservice because it made this one time extra jarring :( hope we ger that other scene, that sounds more like what i wxpected :)

To be honest, I understand that whiplash very much. The thing is, the comedic elements of Vinland Saga is something actually more prevalent in the manga. I quite enjoy it personally. However, the anime portrays a more rough and heavier tone throughout and this episode is one of the few episodes that remain more faithful in the manga. Which would have been fine if they were to have maintained this way more in this season (kind of like in season 1). Though, of course, there are scenes where I really did not enjoy with the comedy. For example, in the manga, for the departure of Thorfinn and Einar saying goodbye to everyone on the farm (chapter 99), his face was so swollen from the 100 hits that the way he talked was supposed to be as if his mouth had been stung by a thousand bees. And he talked that way the ENTIRE FUCKING SCENE. Really glad they changed that to be more wholesome than comedic. I still quite enjoyed the way this episode was handled. Mainly because, with how the previous episode was handled, episode 23 felt like the final episode of the season to me. So this episode was more of a epilogue. Admittedly however, not a fan of how Ylva was handled (though just more indifferent, not as passionate as you 🤣).

Thank you for having watched the anime, it was a tremendous emotional journey, with a great message, I'm sorry that you didn't like some things and that some people don't understand that we don't all have to think the same about everything, I respect your opinion, maybe I don't. share it completely but it is very valid, I consider that everything seen in the work is far superior to the negative things it may have. I hope you react to the future season 3. Because what is coming is very beautiful. Thank you! and see you soon. ^^

I agree with him completely, although I can say I wasn't as... PASSIONATE about it haha. But yeah, it was extremely jarring to see the sudden change of tone after EVERYTHING that happened just beforehand, it almost ruined the reunion with his mother for me. It still got me very emotional but I had to try very hard to really ignore the comedy and keep my attention to what actually mattered. Anyone saying it isn't a jarring switch of tone is honestly just biased because the anime as a whole is freaking amazing, but they did do this last part dirty, lets not pretend it didn't.

Gutted to hear Arcane is next, I thought it was going to be Violet Evergarden replacing Vinland :( Personally it didn't bother me. Its absolutely a bit over the top, but I'm pretty well able to disconnect jarring scenes after many years of watching anime. I'm fairly well able to enjoy 90% of an episode, think 10% is really meh. By the time Helga appeared, I was already in the more serious mood so felt the weight of that scene well enough. I have noticed that when you have negative reactions to scenes, it tends to be very strong and lingers with you for the rest of the episode, so its totally understandable why it effected your enjoyment of the episode as a hole. And don't take that as a critism or a slight, we all have our own ways of experiencing things and that is yours, its totally fine to feel the tonally jarring scenes had a big impact on the overall episode. I think its meant to show how hardened she has become. Leif has mentioned to them the times he found Thorfin. Shes probably got her hopes up in the past, only to have them dashed, so she is now hardened to it. Even with the truth staring her in the face she refuses to except it because she has to be strong. She has to protect her mother, and her own family. She can't afford to be vunerable. She actually kind of shows 4 of the 5 stages of grief. Denial, Bargining (when asking him what he wants), Anger and then when she is talking with him about Thors, Acceptance. We don't see depression, but its a very short time frame, its kind of reverse grief so not exactly applicable and you could also argue we saw depression back it season one (as well as denial) I do think that they probably go a little bit TOO over the top with some aspects of it, but I don't think her reactions are completely ridiculous. Are they textbook, absolutely not, but people aren't textbooks and often react in unpredible ways. Helga of course approves because she and Thors did the same thing. Thier community in Iceland basically was "Vinland" of sorts. They did what Thorfin wants to do, ran from the grips of a kingly tyranny to build a village of peace and freedom. They just didn't go far enough away (because there will never be anywhere far enough away, just far enough away for now). I think its a good episode. Its a shame that the Ylva stuff really spoiled your enjoyment of it.

Completely agree with you on the tonal whiplash. A full two seasons of build-up to a family reuinion, and it's interrupted by a slapstick gag? Also, who is Bug-eyes? Why is it important that he interrupts this huge moment? This episode would work much better if it felt confident enough to be sincere the whole way through. It's the Starwars writing problem where surprising the audience and subverting expectations is prioritised instead of actually executing the emotional payoffs they've spent years developing.

I didn't mind the comedy in this episode, especially since it came after all the depressing and dark stuff. The manga is probably worse in this regard because it has way more comedy in scenes that are more serious in nature.

I think Ylva's reaction was accurate to his character, it's just the portrayal and the vibe given by the anime, that i think was wrong. The humoristic tone bothered me too. May be not as mush as you because i was able to continue watching without being angry. But i agree there were weak points to that part of the story. Apart from that, this anime is very good. But SNK was better in my opinion, may be because there were more themes i like in it, like the theme of freedom and free will, the theme of truth and the fact that there are no good solutions to every problems, making it accurate to the portrayal of "truth depends on opinions." If only those who understood that theme were able to see that everyone has their own truth. It's ironic. Also, i still didn't see your reaction to SNK's endings, for finals episodes, on your channel.

Considering how she acts in the first few eps of the show, it's kinda how she is. And this episode is also made to provide some levity after the heaviness of season 2. He's definitely entitled to his opinion, and it's valid, but it feels like a big overreaction imo.

@@tomasmoreira1592 I agree he overreact. Personnally it bothered me on the instant but i speedy forgot it. And as you are right it's accurate to her character, i desagree that it was necessary to make a joke or a humorstic tone at this moment. Even if her character is funny, this scene was not meant to be funny in my opinion. You can't make scenes that important so humoristic. It broke the tone of the scene. If they wanted to put humor, it was not the good way to do it, and no the good moment.
