Aleister Crowley coined the phrase, 'do as thou wilt, is the whole of the law'. Crowley was a satanist, but many people now live by this law as we often see day to day. Whilst they may not believe the same thing, this is why God will cast them into hell because it was their own choice.

I'm certain that even defending oneself is against the calling of God upon us. If what he meant was, even when someone does you wrong, fo them no wrong in return, then he would have said that. But he points out the common phrase, eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth. People STILL use this today to justify, as Christians, no less, the right to defend themselves if someone hits them or attacks them. Jesus attacks the hypocrisy at the source. The law, that is the laws that are prosecuted by man, and vengeance are not ours. They belong to the higher powers.

Even when Jesus let Himself be mistreated, He stood up for Himself and pointed out the wrong: "Jesus answered him, 'If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?'" (Jn 18:23) Stand up for yourself, but be a person characterized by Christlike mercy and forgiveness. Slow to anger (Jam. 1:19). Not reviling in return (1 Pet. 2:23). Enabling abuse is not okay, including when the victim is yourself.

@mdsoyabaktar Hi, Thank you so much for commenting. I would like you to consider three things as you continue to pursue truth: #1: this verse. ⬇️ 📕 Galatians 1:8 "But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!" #2: Jesus' favorite term for Himself was "the Son of Man." The religious leaders of His day went livid at this label because they knew where He had gotten it from: 📕 Daniel 7:13-15 "I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, and He came up to the Ancient of Days and was presented before Him. And to Him was given dominion, glory and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations and men of every language might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which will not pass away; and His kingdom is one which will not be destroyed. As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me." #3: Consider how Jesus used I AM statements to validate who He was, referencing Exodus 3:14 ("I am"). One example is here: 📕 John 8:58 "Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.'" If you sit with Genesis 3, Isaiah 53, and other texts detailing God's plan of redemption, it will be difficult to sleep due to the awesome glory and majesty of the God who saves sinners. Shalom to you. ❤️ Praying for you.

@mdsoyabaktar Hi, I like that you brought up the example in Ezekiel. The term "son of God" also refers to good angels in the Bible, like in Job 1:6. So I like talking about this. We have to note the definite article "the," of course. There are many "a" son of God in the Bible, but THE son of God refers to only one person: Jesus. Since you're quoting the Bible, I would just like to point out that places like John 1:1-14, Phillippians 2:6, and Heb. 1:8 clearly indicate Jesus' deity. I think even Muslims would agree on this, which is why many of them don't quote the Bible. But I commend you for investigating the Bible! When we bring preconceived biases into a text, it is called eisegesis. I used to do it, too. I would simply like to bring your attention to this fact, since you seem to be picking and choosing parts from a text instead of taking it as a whole. Muslim theology is very different from the biblical one. I dont think you need to keep quoting its admonitions at me since I know them too. (: Please feel free to know how I can better serve you in my comments as well, anything that bothers you, etc. If we let the Bible speak for itself, it is a treasure like no other. I have to go to bed now. I will try to comment again when I can.

Turning the other cheek has to do with not being easily provoked into violence. Similar to when someone is challenging another to a duel with a sword or pistol. If a person is not in physical danger, then avoid violence by walking away. However, if there is the threat of violence and being harmed, or the need for actual justice, this a totally different situation.

Turning the other cheek is a little easier when offended by the lost world. When it comes from people in your church that claim to be followers of Christ it somewhat harder. You expect better from them. We attend a church where some people are loving and kind but some are just down right snotty. They treat you as if are less than them. We had a young woman who appeared to had suffered a hard life come to our church who made a profession of faith and joined our membership. My wife and I made a point to speak to her every Sunday but the earlier mentioned people never accepted her. She left the church shortly thereafter. My wife has suffered because of a church gossip. She did as the word and kindly confronted her. She acknowledged what she did but never apologized. We are running out of cheeks.

To start things off in most translations Jesus doesn't say turn the cheek. He says if someone slaps you on the right cheek then turn your left. This is shown in the scripture that this Pastor quoted . However, he's correct when he says on the insult & we need God's help to do so(Romans 8:7). It was definitely metaphorical because in Matthew 5:29-30. It says your right eye & hand causes you to sin to cut them off. When Peter denied Jesus 3x, he didn't cut his hand or eye.

One has a right and need to defend himself and others against sustained aggression. As to honor: A man may choose to forego avenging his honor; he would likely do well in all cases to follow that rule. However, if a woman or a child is involved, nothing less than a full recompense will do.

Jesus specifically said "If anyone slaps you on the right cheek..." If you're hit on the right cheek by someone facing you, then likely it was a backhanded slap, since most people are right handed. A backhanded slap is not a serious attempt to injure; it's a provocation. I think Jesus is saying don't let someone tempt you into fighting them. This is what I was taught.

Right cheek = Left hand. The left hand then was for bathroom activites. Being touched with it was worse than the right hand. He was telling people to make them harm you with their other hand. The proper societal hand. That is being a revolutionary & daring them to escalate their behavior. It is about forcing someone to show their true hand/side by repeating the action with the admirable hand. What was being said was, ‘I dare you to turn this into a real battle as peers’ Turning the *other* cheek is offering them a chance for the right hand to be used but if they do use the right hand, you are making them show the world you are not below them & you refuse to be made a subject to them. It is a battle between truth & hyperbole. He is asking people to not allow themselves to be treated with disdain with the bathroom hand. He is telling people to stand up to tyrany and make those people understand they are not better but equal. He is saying, ‘this is how you teach them they are not above you’. When acting like this, you are teliing the tyrant, ‘if you want to harm me, I will only allow you to attempt it, as my peer’. This is a how to show you will not be pushed around by anyone that thinks they are superior. It is not a passive story. It’s a warrior story. This is, ‘if you think you can treat me like I’m worthless, think again because we are going to be brawling if you do it again because we are peers and I can strike back’ If the Right hand was used, it would mean the person being harmed has an equal right to strike back and doesn’t not subscribe to the idea they can be harmed as an inferior.

Thank you for this, I needed some clarity for where the line was drawn when it came to violence. As a martial artist who even trained under a Christian master, I’ve always wondered, is what I do ok, and this gave me clarity. There is a fine line between turning the other cheek to just letting people slug you and walk away without a care, as I can assure that not everyone will care what you say, and something will have to be done to get the message across. And there’s the fact that some people when you say to slap again will think you’re a masochist and maybe just leave in disgust, which works too but I don’t recommend if you don’t want a dead reputation so yeah, thank you.

@@-JesusisGod- This passage doesn’t need an analysis of ancient Jewish culture, and today’s culture is completely irrelevant to it. As I said, the text literally says that Jesus is referring to an assault because He says if someone strikes you on the cheek. That’s beyond an insult. Furthermore, the disciples exampled Jesus’ words because they were assaulted for the name of Christ and turned the other cheek. Acts 5:40-41 says, "…They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name." Jesus said that whoever rejects you (His people) rejects Him (Luke 10:16). This tells us that we are not to take any attack on us personally. God said, “Vengeance is mine, says the Lord, I will repay” (Romans 12:19). Obviously, God wants us to turn violence perpetrated against us over to Him. This verse also teaches us to turn the other cheek. In Acts 14:19-20, they tried to kill Paul. They stoned him and he responded nonviolently. We need to study the Bible to understand the Bible.

I believe this is something to ask HIM after all "HE is a very present help in time of trouble " "HE will not leave us as orphans in a storm" Remember this to will pass. I wouldn't let someone just beat me I would fight back it really depends on how dangerous the situation is. Some times it's wiser to look for an escape. GOD will make a way of escape. There is more to "turn the other cheek". It is actually quite a subversive reaction, and rather defiant form of non-violent resistance. Under Roman law, a master could reprimand his slave with a backhanded slap on the cheek with his left (unclean) hand, but only once. The expected reaction is for the slave to cower in submission. In public, this presented an opportunity for the slave to dare the master to slap him again by turning the other cheek. If the master did so with his open right hand (making it unclean), he risked being fined because it was illegal. Of course out of this the slave has asserted his own dignity looking at his master as an equal, and the master is forced to halt further violence to avoid being humiliated himself. If the slave had hit the master back in retaliation, more violence would ensue and the slave would lose an opportunity to communicate the love of Jesus Christ to the master. Do not resist the evildoer, which can be taken to mean do not respond with violence.

It literally says, "if someone strikes you on the cheek..." That is not merely an insult. Dr. Martin Luther King demonstrated this. He was preaching this very passage and it was also about loving your enemy. Someone from the church pew walked up to him while he was preaching and punched him in the face. Dr. King did not retaliate. His entourage subdued the guy. Dr. King told them to let him go and never pressed charges. He continued his sermon.

@@statesman6379 I think we all agree that M.L.King did the right thing. His message surely was much stronger that way. Hitting someone to cheek, is not much. The Bible speaks many times about different, severe violent attacks. Surely Jesus knew how many carried a sword and knife. Staffs were also in use. Weapons carried to defend from thiefs, bad guys and wild animals. Then he said "is someone hits you to your cheek...". Jesus also used alot of metaphors etc. I think most likely interpretation is that this was, atleast partly, about insults. Jesus was telling his disciples to buy a swords. So, surely there were times when self defence was right thing to do.

@statesman6379 4 месяца назад
@@mikemental8285 Jesus didn't reveal His reason for telling them to bring swords until later on. At no point did Jesus ever say, "Defend yourselves with the sword." You only infer that is what He meant. Jesus later used Peter’s drawing of the sword incident as an illustration to teach, “He who lives by the sword dies by the sword.” Have you ever considered that the reason Jesus told them to bring swords was to teach them this very principle? Jesus knows the future. Had Peter not had a sword to draw, then Jesus would have not had the illustration to teach us this principle. Furthermore, the Bible explicitly says, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds” (1 Cor. 10:4). This was Jesus' point of telling them to bring swords. Jesus wanted to show His disciples that Christians are not to fight the way that the world fights. If the prop wasn't there then Jesus wouldn't have had the illustration to teach this. God said, “Vengeance is mine, says the Lord, I will repay.” Obviously, God wants us to turn violence perpetrated against us over to Him. Consider the Apostles’ response to violence perpetrated against them. Acts 5:40-41 says, " His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name." In Acts 14:19-20, they tried to kill Paul. They stoned him and he responded nonviolently. And also, read Acts 16:16-24. Christians are not to fight like the world fights. By offering the left cheek one has challenged the aggressor, who wont do it. The other two following tips are equally stretegic as well. Not saying the speaker here is wrong, just adding that there is more to it as well.

I think other passages that go along with this concept are the ones about shaking off the dust if you are talking to someone about the gospel and they will not listen. There is an obligation to walk away if they reject, not beat someone about the head and neck with a large print KJV bible, lol...which is the attitude ive seen from believers over the years. Preach the word....and know when to walk away. Fitting to that, is dont cast your pearls to swine or give what is holy to the dogs, lest they trample it and tear you apart....again, know when not to talk...when to walk away. These are instructions about the believers behavior...what TO DO in these cases.

In those days, when one was wronged financially or materially, the court would order a financial judgement and then allow the plaintiff to literally slap the defendant on the face. The Christian life is not difficult but rather, it is impossible. It takes a miracle to live according to the standard that Christ set for his followers. That is why we must continue to live IN CHRIST just like we did in that first moment when we threw ourselves onto his mercy and grace and we realized how desperate we were for God’s forgiveness and Christs amazing grace. Christ was beaten, tortured, and died a miserable death that included separation from God. Christ did that so we wouldn’t have to. When we remember the seriousness of our sin we can begin to understand the grace and love of God and our saviour Jesus Christ. I believe that we need to have this at the forefront of our hearts and minds if we are to live with victory and in the spirit of Christ.

According to Walter Wink, the left hand was considered unclean, and would not be used in this situation. Striking with the right palm showed that the aggressor thought the victim to be his equal. The only way for someone to face you and hit your right cheek is for them to backhand you; thus, you would be “beneath” them. If you turn your other cheek, you assert your equality. They can’t use their left hand (unclean), and if they use their right, palm forward, they acknowledge you as an equal. Jesus was showing wisdom here.

Turn the other cheek as a civil obedience exhortation, to simply not sweat the details... In other words, people getting your face with nonsense and it's for the most part trivial, and they're just blowing off steam - that's where you have to be meek, which is not weak, it is power under control. Turning your cloak and grabbing a blade on the other hand, is when things are outside of your ability to control and, as a man you have to discern when you need to protect yourself and your family. Well, its all about jewish culture, Jesus is not saying that you should get beat up. You see, Slapping someone in jewish culture was done simply to embarass the person. Important detail is that by culture you were supposed to slap someone only with one and only with its outside. So turning the other cheek to the person bulling you set you in position where if that person will hit you again, he will punch you with the inner part of hand which is equal to starting a fight. So turning the other chick is like "When someone humiliate you, dont humiliate that person, but confront her openly"

Literally: in the first century in a courtroom situation, the equivalent of the prosecutor would employ a slap in the face by way of accusation. The advice is simply to not retaliate against a false accusation/official misconduct or overreach by hitting back. Sort of like not fighting back against police brutality. Same with "going the extra mile". LITERALLY Roman officials could compel a Jewish subject to carry their luggage fir them exactly one mile and no more, by law. Many Jews had mile markers set up near their houses in order to "enforce" this law. Jesus said to volunteer to go two miles instead; because this is what morally defeats the oppressor, if you do him good because you want to, not because you are under compulsion.

He said this after he said eye for an eye tooth for a tooth. So it means exactly what it saids it’s literal not figurative. It’s all for the sake of the gospel. It’s not eye for an eye anymore. It’s keep your peace and let YAH fight your battles. When you turn the other cheek that’s actually showing strength to the person who hit you. This will actually show a person how strong you are. And he or she will think twice about the next slap in the face. Not saying just stand there and let someone keep hitting you. If you have time to turn the other cheek you’re actually showing the person how strong you are and I believe they either walk away or feel bad that they hit you. This will allow you to be a witness of the gospel to them and you actually can win a soul this way. Restraint is strength.! YAH will avenge!

I think Jesus just meant do not retaliate physically. But we could defend ourselves verbally and protect ourselves and loved ones. That’s what Jesus did when He was slapped. Apostle Paul defended using his Roman citizenship. In the case of bullying, I still think it’s better to defend oneself physically sometimes. In the case where people wants to rob you of your house, give over the title deed, it makes no sense to give in. In the case of people knocking at your door asking if there is a J so they could take and m them, we do not give in. In the case where people wants to take away your sons and daughters do they could do something to them, we do not give in. Believers are called to fight evil, defend our family too.
