What Did John Snow Know About Cholera? - with James Grime

Physician John Snow famously figured out the cause of a cholera outbreak using maths and statistics, and thereby helped to disprove the miasma theory of disease - that people get ill from 'bad air'.

James Grime is a mathematician with a personal passion for maths communication and the promotion of mathematics in schools and to the general public. He can be mostly found doing exactly that, either touring the world giving public talks, or on RU-vid.
James has a PhD in mathematics and his academic interests include group theory (the mathematics of symmetry) and combinatorics (the mathematics of networks and solving problems with diagrams and pictures). James also has a keen interest in cryptography (the mathematics of codes and secret messages), probability (games, gambling and predicting the future) and number theory (the properties of numbers).

Earlier in March this year before the world locked down, we teamed up with our friend @singingbanana to find out what John Snow knows. We then waited for a good time to release it and well... we realised we might be waiting for a long, long time yet. So here's our final short film of the year. And now to mix metaphors - Victorian physician and medical pioneer John Snow: what did he know? Did he know things?? Let's find out.

I teach GIS and stats at university level, and devote a lecture to John Snow--a true hero. If you run a weighted centre of mass-type average position over time, the pump is never more than 10-15 metres away from that point. (there's an animation on YT somewhere)

Shut up, please. This video was filmed before that one. This story has been told in dozens of books and documentaries over hundreds of years. The fact that this is not the first RU-vid video published on the topic is not a surprise.

@@lindhe I agree. Though I learned very little here that I hadn't already learned from Map Men, I at least found it enjoyable to watch.
@Huntracony

@@oliverwilson11 I know. Yet, usually, they try to avoid releasing videos on the same subject with the same level of detail too close to each other. But sometimes that doesn't work out, which is why I said, "the agonies of parallel creation." That is an acknowledge that they were made in parallel meaning neither stole from the other, it's a recognition that it's a pain, mainly for the creator, when that happens. It's a reference to CGPGrey's video on the subject.
@oliverwilson11
@oliverwilson11 3 года назад
@@Huntracony What do you mean "stole", it's completely legitimate to learn something from a book or film and repeat that information in your own work. That's how the vast majority of published information works. I think you are wildly overestimating how many people will see both of two modestly successful RU-vid videos. The RU-vid comment saying only that another channel has previously made a video on the same topic is a classic annoying and unhelpful type of RU-vid comment, particularly on channels that focus on a certain niche where there is a limited range of video topics available.

Pretty wasteful to boil clean water. If the pipes are bad where you live then go ahead but in most cities there's no need, water supply systems have improved since the 1800s
@kwanarchive
@kwanarchive 3 года назад
@@oliverwilson11 No, like I said, even water systems in developed countries have momentary breaks. No system is perfect - that's why maintenance is required. No first world water system is maintenance free. The whole point of the first world is that we can afford to pay for people to do regular maintenance - not to skimp on it. But maintenance is not perfect. Things still break and take some time before they get diagnosed and fixed, not to mention the time it takes to notify everyone affected (if they even get the message in time). Having reliably clean water is great. If I'm in a hurry then I can be reasonably sure I'm safe. But it's not a guarantee, so even with modern clean water systems it is still better to be safe than sorry.

We agree, and if we were to film it again now, we'd definitely be wearing masks. (Although not at this very moment as we're under Tier 4 regulations.) This was filmed back in early March 2020 when we were first hearing about the virus and when Public Health England advice didn't yet suggest mask wearing.
