But how does R2-D2 know Anakin is Vader? Obi-wan and Anakin started fighting and that's the last time he saw Anakin. Obi-wan returned, Anakin didn't. Obi-wan thought Anakin was dead, he learnt that Anakin survived a few years later in a pub on Tatooine. There's no way that R2-D2 knew Anakin became Vader.

So from everything we've seen R2-D2 doesn't know Anakin survived Mustafar and become Darth Vader and that's a good thing! Because it would create a massive plot hole in the original trilogy.

Incorrect about R2 not doing any head spinning when Padme revealed herself to Boss Nas. In the original theatrical release and on the VHS copy of the film you can hear him freaking out. There's enough motion in his head to know that the character was meant to be saying something. But since the Bluray releases that has been removed.

R2 DEFINITELY knew who Luke was when they first met. He was with Anakin and Padme when they went to Tatooine in Ep.2 and was there as the Lars homestead. So some kid who is named Luke Skywalker living with Anakin's stepbrother is obviously Anakin's Luke.

I'm not aware of anything from canon that points to R2 knowing Anakin was Darth Vader. So, unless I'm missing something, all he knew was Obi-Wan and Anakin fought, and maybe not even that because Anakin told R2 to stay with the ship.

At 8:20...wait R2 last saw Anakin on Mustafar with Obi one. So when Leia gave R2 the message for obi, R2 didn’t know Vader was Anakin yet or how did he find out? Obi one could have told R2 I killed him or left him on mustafar, he couldn’t have known the emperor took him back and put him in the suit, right?
