WHAT DID THE ROMANS DO FOR US?? Pont du Gard, the stunning World Heritage Site!

The Pont du Gard is one of the great sights of ancient Rome. It is the second-highest building built by the Romans. The Pont du Gard is part of a Roman, 26-mile water course, carrying water to the city of Nimes. Not put off by temperatures of 38-39°C, I decide to go for a 10km walk to another part of the aquaduct route, and nearly regret it. This was the closest I'd come to experiencing heat exhaustion, and it wasn't pleasant.

Whew. That one was a tough one to watch. That heat!! We've had a hot summer here (Ontario, Canada) but on days like you experienced when it's humid and in the 40 level, we are not hiking about. Thank you, as always, for taking us along on your journey. This series has been terrific. We had no idea about the ancient history of that area of France. Take it easy...you deserve it.

I love doing walks through foreign countryside, but from past experience, anything over 25 degrees is pushing the boundaries of what I’m capable of. I near came a cropper in Portugal walking between towns, about 16km walk through countryside with just about enough water in 30+ heat, absolutely nothing but countryside the whole distance, absolutely stunning walk, plan was to walk there, get some lunch, and walk back, I got there and got an Uber back, I defo enjoyed throwing myself in the pool when I got back.

We live in Portugal where the temperatures are about the same, We don't leave the house between 12.00 and 18.00 let alone go hiking. You must be very fit, very brave or very mad. But the results are worth it for an unfit, timorous but sane person like myself :>)

Oh my that was tense viewing! It’s the first one of yours I’ve watched after the challenge with Steve Marsh (that’s how I found you!) I’ve been there twice, once was 30 years ago and then about 5 years ago, both times were super hot and I moaned like hell just walking from the car park to the aqueduct 😂

Nice video. When I was there in 1989 we walked across the upper deck of the aqueduct - no guard rails or anything. { and I've got a pic of me looking over the edge to prove it]Very high and pretty scary.

Great video Scott but the fact that there was hardly anyone else on the paths is not surprising. It's unadvisable to be out in the sun between 2pm and 6pm around Nîmes as it's the hottest part of France every summer.

I know you like to walk and explore but do you advise someone - a friend, colleague, someone in the place you stayed the night before, etc. - of your daily plan(s) and your anticipated hour of return? Or do you have a contact somewhere in the world with an anticipated time to make your (daily?) checking-in phone call? Your remark about hikers possibly finding your body two weeks later, or the vultures getting their feed first, while humourous might also be scarily possible. I enjoy your videos despite my concern.

I know how hot it can be in France at this time of the year. I also recognise the remoteness of such an environment in France. And you walked far too far. Buying the blue map of the area would have given you a much better information . I hope you're okay and I hope that in the future you treat extreme heat with the respect it deserves.

Although Scott, I’m sure a lot of your subscribers will say you shouldn’t have done that in that heat, I’d say you knew it was going to be hot the day you went or the next few days coming up and you only live life once, make the most of it, great content and glad you found what ultimately you were liking for, hope you had a few cold ones to celebrate and great idea of staying in Nimes and visiting what it had to offer.

In those sort of conditions, when you come across some water (be it a fountain or a pool etc) get your hat really wet, and ideally your shirt too. Even if you cant drink the water, Evaporative cooling is pretty effective.

I was holding my breath while you were chattering away not far from dehydration. Certainly not a sensible decision on your part to do this hike in such terrible conditions . I'm sure the Griffins are cursing their luck . I drank a pint of water at the end of the narrative. Very interesting though . Imagine being part of the crew detailed to construct this stone marvel . Roman holiday .

Don't you ever do this again! I live in a desert. The heat is no joke, and a video isn't worth you risking your health. I spent half the time worrying about France's rescue services having helicopters. Consider yourself duly chastised. 🤨 (That village was gorgeous, though.)
