Jesus said at John 18:36 that his kingdom was not of this world. If the thief on the cross knew that, then he was asking to be remembered in another world.

Yeah, he had overheard some of Jesus' claims. Simple.

I think in the presence of Jesus, Emanuel the spiritual truth would be present. All one would need is to be open to it. I think the thief was repent full, and new in his spirit that Jesus was the Son of the most high. My two scents. None of us will really know till that day.

You also have to remember that the Bible has like 3 seconds of conversation between the thief and Jesus. Them fellas were hanging out for awhile there together. Who knows what else Jesus could have said to him.
