This video only shows how crazy the record by Hoogland is. Hank went for rolling start from the top of a hill and got the help of the camera car for wind resistance, and he was only 4 seconds faster than the world record. No wonder you need 900 watt (average) and 2700 watt (peak) to get the record.

I’m fairly local and have ridden that descent multiple times, and while it is quick it’s not one I would choose for this challenge. That bend at the start is steep and you’re having to hold back the speed a lot to get round it, plus it’s a pretty busy road. You could definitely do better on a better suited road

Cold air is more dense than Warm air. Likewise, higher elevations have less dense air than lower elevations. Ideally you want to be in LESS dense air in order to reduce aerodynamic drag forces being felt on the body / bike. However, there is a performance penalty on humans / engines that operate in high elevation environments. You / your engine (cardiovascular system) will be unable to intake better levels of oxygen when up at a less dense environment (high altitude) compared to when at lower altitudes (high density air) of which has more oxygen per unit volume of air used by your cardiovascular system. In a magical controlled experiment, If you wanted to see the fastest velodrome times, you would want to have an indoor velodrome up in the Himalayan mountains but, the velodrome cyclist would need to have a positive pressure oxygen mask on when he rides. 😁

Brilliant video! Great chemistry between these two, and it's always good to see Hank at speed! Some of us enjoy speed and have the abilities required to descend quickly. People imply that I'm crazy for my descent speed too, but it's all relative. This is a skillset of mine, and it comes naturally to me. I don't go around calling other people crazy for doing things that I'm not proficient at, like chefs or synchronised swimmers. We can all choose whether or not we ride down a hill quickly. If you don't think you can do it, don't do it. You shouldn't need someone (e.g. GCN) to warn you that it might be dangerous. Assess it for yourself and make your own decision based on your competence and risk appetite. You know, like an evolved human.

Grab yourself a BARGAIN and decent spec 1st road bike or winter spare. Yesterday I ordered a new 2022 Giant Contend 1, rim brake bike from Winstanley Bikes of Wigan. With 40% off the RRP of £999, I paid just £599. I spoke to staff on phone who said its on its way from the warehouse. With Shimano Sora 50/34 and 11-34 cassette, Sora levers and Tektro rim brakes at around 9.5kg I think whilst this is a starter road bike spec, it represents great value for money and receives good reviews. I have no affiliation with Winstanleys, suggest you check availability over phone, as I did.

What's everyone else's fastest 1 km? I Just checked my Strava files: my fastest 1km was downhill, downwind, in the summer - 46 seconds, Av 83.7km/h, fastest 91.1km/h Great video, very entertaining but looked a bit, um, sketchy! Chapeau!

I adore you skinny guys. As a large guy weighting 100+kg that can do 150kg squats for a warmup, generating 1500W for a 10s burst or sustained 1000W for 1min is a peace of cake. I typically need 10s to reach 60km/h on a gentle downhill slope. However, I'm always last on the climb :D.

I'm curious if a heavy eurobike is faster than a aero bike in a downhill...
