*Also: I realize I didn’t actually review the skating but here is my 2 cents: 1. Learning how to skate from equations is ridiculous. 2. Who choreographed the routines before the final performance? How did she learn footwork from science? I have a lot of questions...

Fun fact- Michelle Trachtenberg actually did competitive ice skate as a child and did a decent amount of the work on ice in this movie. I learned that from a Buffy interview with her and Sarah Michelle Gellar (who also was a competitive ice skater before she got famous) where they speak of their skating history and how they used to skate together a lot.

great commentary! you're realistic and give great insight, yet it's also apparent that you like the movie! Honestly, so many similar feelings here :D I was a non-competitive figure skater, precisely because of the cost, and, frankly, I didn't want to be in a club, which leads to even more costs. My parents and I lived in switzerland then and everything was regulated somehow through clubs. Also, everything is more expensive there... I loved training but obviously a part of ice skating was missing. On the other hand, I got to make up my own routines. When I watched this movie, there was a tiny part of me wishing it were true and as easy.

Wow, so interesting to hear a perspective from so far away. It’s similar here I believe, we have clubs and stuff and that’s how you are able to compete so definitely similar. The older I get, the more I realized I loved the art of skating over competing, I’m not a anti-competition, just had way more fun making my own moves/routines. Thank you for checking this out, I think I’ll be doing my skating movie critiques for sure! Do you have any fav skating movies?

@@PorshaLauri I got to spend 4 weeks in a town with a frozen pond in the middle. It was glorious to be out "training" all day and making up routines :) There is definitely a lot to be said for the art and beauty of skating just for the sake of skating. I also enjoy the lightness and a good edge during spirals and foot work more than i do the jumps when I watch figure skating now :) As for the movies: the original Ice Castles! The Cutting Edge, and another cute disney movie: Go Figure, although that one is more about friendship and team spirit (and ice hockey ;D)

Yes! I was just talking about Ice Castles with my bf, it’s definitely something I want to cover. I’m down to do any skating videos, I also love like Brink (DCOM) cause people always confused my roller skating with blading/skateboarding so I’ll try to do a mix of any skating. Also love the Mighty Ducks series so I’m sure I’ll like Go Figure! Thanks for the suggestions 😌

I was a figure skater too growing up, and I agreed 100% with your whole review on this movie! I especially agree when you said that there is a lack of diversity in this movie, and you hope future movies like this will show more diversity. YASSS to that!

With the quarantine going on, I’ve had a lot of time to look back on old photos and videos and it’s glaringly obvi that movies do not show true diversity within this sport particularly. I really hope that changes in the future. What type of skating did you do? Roller or ice?
