Melissa is back!! This week Mel and I went to the cinema to watch Emily, the new film biopic of the life of Emily Brontë. We were Showcase Cinema "insiders" so got to see the film a week before it came out at the cinema. I highly recommend becoming an insider as it's free to register and you get money back when you buy tickets!
What did we think of the film? You'll have to watch the video. We've tried our best not to put any spoilers in it, but obviously some of the things we discuss you'll know - such as Emily's death (not a surprise).
Take care & see you soon :)

I enjoy reading and watching all things Bronte (more biographical), but I have read all the books. While watching Emily I found myself in a love-hate situation; it would be a shame if people knowing very little of the Brontes started here and looked no further. "To Walk Invisible "is a beautiful film and one should watch that first. Then read other bio books befor watching Emily. The film uses a considerable artistic license, which I was happy to go along with, however, this film would not have inspired me to take the Bronte journey I have been on and still follow.

That's such a great review of the film and excellent advice for finding out more about the Brontë sisters - thank you for sharing!

*To Walk Invisible* is the best!

The movie is beautiful, but I am confused as to why they didn’t stay closer to actual history. The true story of the Brontë family is more dramatic than what they changed it to with their artistic license.

So true - I think sometimes writers think they have to overdramatise history when in truth, the ordinary can sometimes hit much more than anything dramatic.

I was looking for a review and this one popped up. You two are like a comedy act, it was a great video, really well put together, thankyou! I'll definitely give it a try. In truth I probably know too much, Emily was quite ferocious in real life. It's worth visiting the parsonage at Haworth if interested. Oh, I was brought up by women too but saying that I am a middle aged man, lol.

I wonder why Frances O'Connor had decided to connect William Weightman with Emily Bronte, instead of Anne Bronte?

Yeah it's an interesting one isn't it? I read Agnes Grey recently too and I think O'Connor could have really done a beautiful film about Anne Brontë and the crossovers with Agnes Grey

Pains my heart that you love Jane Eyre but haven’t touched Wuthering Heights. I have a love hate going on. I love it for the dynamics but hate how readers and critics often lean on the romantic aspect and not the theme. Love is wild, dangerous, and can be madness it has consequences.

I have read Wuthering Heights - my sister hasn't but I kind of like that because it gave us two very different perspectives on the film. Love your last statement - very true!

The movie was a 7/10 to me. Emma Mackey was almost perfect as Emily Brontë. I didn't like the main love interest (William Weightman), though. I understand that the film tried to portray him as a conflicted character torn between his affection for Emily and his vocation, but he came off as a real jerk, in my opinion, when he blatantly dismissed her after them having multiple instances of sexual intercouse.
