Edit: SINCE YOU GUYS KEEEP COMMENTING ABOUT AUSSIE RULES/RUGBY GO WATCH MY RESPONSE VIDEO: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U4HOGYK-8dw.html Yes I know rugby and Aussie rules are different that’s why I said “SLASH.” Often, when a slash is used in a formal or informal text, it is meant to indicate the word or. Also what you don’t see in the video is me explaining the difference to them in the video because I chose to edit it out. LETS GO POWER⚡️
It is definitely best to say that cricket is the most popular, because in winter the country is divided between fans of Aussie Rules (AFL) and Rugby League (NRL), while in summer all the different footy fans will watch the cricket (as well as the tennis, of course).
The US has a pretty bad education system if many people cannot identify Australia on a world map. Australia is physically the SAME SIZE as the US and sitting in the middle of the ocean!!
Ikr I’m American and lemme tell me I’m only a kid and yeserday we watch a video at school of High school students and adults had to point where a country is and they were so like dumb but the kids pointed everything right
The only thing that rugby (league OR union) and AFL have in common is that they know the other is inferior! 😆 Oh, and that U.S football is VASTLY, woefully inferior (No, seriously. I'm an AFL fan, but I'd watch 1,000 hrs of rugby before one hour of U.S football!). AFL is FAAAAR and away the most popular Aussie spectator sport though. Hope you get/got a chance to catch a match.
Fun fact: Canberra was only established under a mandate in the Australian Constitution to appease the competitiveness between Australia’s two most populous cities Sydney and Melbourne and so the agreement was to establish a neutral Australian Capital Territory (ACT) roughly halfway between the two cities which is not under the government jurisdiction of either the states of New South Wales or Victoria. The Australian national capital was to be established inside the zone of the ACT and it was given the name Canberra, which is an Aboriginal word that means “Meeting Place”.
@@kevindodds7529 BUT it DOES have a harbour: Jarvis Bay...WAAAAY away on the coast (obviously), so that our capital also has a port... just, not attached or practical. 🤣👍
I'm Australian and I'm not too concerned people don't know where it is but when people from the States think it is Canada or Europe thats pretty poor. That would be like me thinking the USA is New Zealand.
Notice to Americans: Education is a priority!!! I've always known how internalized the US is but your lack of knowledge about anywhere else in the world is astounding! When Americans themselves admit that they know nothing of Australia, its definately time to change the educational system. Our Country is very close in size to the US but you cant find it on a map!🤦♀️Also, we not only eat kangaroo but cull them due to over-population. Proudly Australian!!!🇦🇺
Couldn't agree more. He should have asked all the Americans if they know the name of the current and former prime Minister of Australia. I bet only a very small percentage of Americans would know that but if you asked Australians who the current and former president of the US is, a large percentage of Aussies would get it right. To be fair though, we have mainstream media to thank for our knowledge, where as the US likely doesn't get much media about Australia.
@@stormb3948 The US media is rather picky about what it chooses to tell the people. They're told of the occasional story but most find out for themselves if they wish too. I understand that Sky News Australia is quite popular with the US. It really makes my blood boil when there is such naivety about anything non-American. I have an acquaintance in Namibia who actually heard about storms that were forecast to hit Victoria and was concerned for me. I was shocked that any news of Australia was even broadcast in Namibia in the first place. They really set out to find the dumbest in this video. Honestly, how can they not know where we are on a map? These videos have a habit of only including the most naive but still there is no excuse for this level of ignorance. I bet they couldn't even name our States despite most of us being able to name the 50 States of the US. Go figure?🇦🇺✌
I grew up in the third world country Philippines and when I was in high school, I already learned world map and world history and most of all I can already identified capital city of every country in the world. This is very bad, this Americans are so embarrassing.
@@pinayladyoz8044 well yea that’s true, but if you never leave where you live then why would you need to know that Italy’s shaped like a boot and in the southern part of Europe or that Sudan exists
Ad Revenue If you go to the Australian states of Victoria (Melbourne) and Tasmania (Hobart) avoid them in the colder months between May and September. It’s wet and miserable in the south east of the country during the Australian winter. Best time to visit is from October through to April when the weather is more sunny. January and February are the hottest months so be prepared for 90°F+ days.
@@FionaEm Yep. America is in straight jacket territory and I'd visit from the Land of Oz but there's a global Pandemic right now. Really. Corona/NFL is not a hoax.
As an older person (who knows who Mewto is btw) that was fun! Very concerning that one girl pointed to Canada(!?) as the location for Australia! LHM! What was the fourth option for national animal; some slang word? (koala, wombat, kangaroo, image of a weird guy?) I know they often have an overpopulation of kangaroos, so it's not surprising they eat them. The wild turkey was nearly our national bird and we eat them!
@elaine turcotte You’re awesome. So cool that you picked up on that. A bogan is slang and I guess would be like....🤔? Seriously, you might have to google it. It’s someone who is as Aussie as it gets. If I start mentioning stubbies, tanks and thongs it could go on forever.
Thanks dude for mentioning our Music. We’ve got a range of great bands from Australian Crawl, Tame Impala, PowderFinger, midnight oil, Pete murrary and so many others.
we eat our coat of arms, the emu and kangaroo... they are also 2 animals that cannot walk backwards, hence they were chosen as a symble of always progressing.
Here is a question from an Aussie. Where was the first international game of cricket played? Answer: on Manhattan Island at the New York Cricket Club. Canada played the USA.
I am from Perth Western Australia and I was born here in Australia and it’s funny how many Americans don’t know that much about Australia unless they meet someone or have been here and by the way it is Aussie rules (AFL) that is more popular in Australia except during summer then it becomes cricket as Aussie rules for AFL or also known as Australian football league is played in winter
Whats the first thing that comes to your mind when thinking about australia? Me: the Australian women's beach volleyball team! Shamefully, that's the fastest I've ever answered a question, EVER!
Honestly, if it weren't for growing up watching American TV shows I would know as little about America as some Americans seem to know about Australia. I was impressed with some of the answers, particularly the guy who mentioned Tash Sultana and I liked that the interviewer didn't take the piss out of anyone.
The highest attendance to an Aussie Rules game is 121,000 + to the 1970 grand final (the Aussie version of the Superbowl) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (home of the AFL) between Carlton v Collingwood the two oldest and most fierce suburban rivals in Melbourne and indeed the Australian & Victorian Football league, there are other rivalries between other state teams but none are as old as this rivalry
The one thing I am horrified about is not anything else they got wrong they were fairly specific questions but on a map majority couldn’t find it on a map.
What about the girl who thinks there are zebras in Australia and that it is where Canada is on the map? Actually the ones who said Melbourne was the capital were half right because it was the capital from 1901-1927. Aboriginal = adjective (as in Aborginal culture), Aborigine = noun (the people are Aborigines). Aussie Rules and Rugby are completely different. You can't sat Aussie Rules/Rugby. It would be like saying American football/soccer. Rugby was invented in England. Aussie Rules was invented in Australia (specifically Melbourne). Aussie Rules is definitely the national sport, not cricket. They don't really compete with each other because Aussie Rules is played in winter and cricket in summer. Aussie Rules has the fourth highest average attendance for a domestic competition in the world. It is true that it has a stronger following in some states/terrritories (Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and Northern Territory) than others (New South Wales, Queensland and Australian Capital Territory), but it is the most widely watched sport overall.
I always get comments saying, “YoU oNlY iNtErViEd x AmOnUt Of PeOpLe, tHeSe OpinioNs dOnT rEpReSeNt eVeRyOnE rEeEEEeEe!!!!” So now I have to explain to them that I didn’t interview everyone 🤦🏽♂️
@@JamesPrime1 I'm a Victorian and am pretty confident (having travelled all over Oz) that it is pretty hard to beat for beauty and incredible nature, amazing towns, loads of amazing things to do and the most dope capital city (Melbourne). But Perth is kind of my second home which I love and Tasmania is gorgeous.
To the two girls who said giraffes and zebras, I suppose if one tipped either continent on its side there is a resemblance. The different sizes may be a bit of a giveaway they are not the same continent.
Many people nailed the pronunciation of Melbourne. Very odd! Also, I liked your disclaimer about not having interviewed every single American. It should be unnecessary to say so, but it’s surprising how many vox pop interviewers pretend their survey is the final word. The political ones just edit out every vox that doesn’t support their view.
The Kangaroo and Emu feature on our National Emblem because 1) they are only in Australia, but mainly because 2) they can not move backwards - only forwards. Symbolising Australia only progresses forward, not stagnant or backwards.
The reason why Canberra is the capital is because Sidney and Melbourne were both trying to become the capital but because they couldn’t come to a decision they decided the only way to settle it is have another city become the capital, so they made Canberra the capital
national animal is kangaroo and emu which are on our coat of arms, both animals do not have a reverse, a symbal to say we are a country going forward, even some aussie dont know that
Yes to the lady who said she likes Vegemite it's a taste you have to get used to I would like to go to America and see how different the cultures are stay safe everyone 🇦🇺
The most popular sport is horse racing or the Melbourne Cup to be precise. Everybody in the whole country stops what they're doing for that horse race. That does not happen with any other sport. That day is a public holiday in the state of Victoria. Other than that, cricket is the most popular. The national animal of Australia is both the kangaroo and the emu. Both animals are on the Australian Coat of Arms. I have to admit, I am surprised that so many there know as much as they do about Australia.
It's 'aborigine' pronounced 'ab or ij i nee' and derived from the Latin, 'ab origine' which means 'original inhabitant'. It refers to any group of people who are, or who are descended from, the first human occupants of any region in the world. 'Aboriginal' is the adjectival form.
@@RandomStuff-he7lu we refer to ourselves as Koorie. Sometimes followed by our Tribe, for instance, Im Koorie - Palawa, my mate, she's a Koorie wurundjeri woman
@sovereignty rules it's not actually. It literally means the first people to inhabit a place dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/aboriginal www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/aboriginal
@sovereignty rules The word aboriginal derives the Latin ab origine. In Latin, the preposition ab means 'from', or 'since'. origine means 'origin'. Together, 'from the beginning'. “Aboriginies” which means “Original inhabitants” English has another prefix ab-, as to mean "away" or"separated from" used commonly only in abnormal as far as I can think, which derives from a corruption of the Greek prefix a-, which generally forms the negative of the unprefixed word.
Sport is a hard one. However it’s a shame that you asked the capital question in Chicago. Canberra was a designed capital avoiding a choice between the two larger cities of Sydney and Melbourne. The city layout was designed by, and the man made lake in it named after its architect, a Chicago native; Walter Burley Griffin. He won a competition to design the capital which actually led (possibly through jealousy), he and Frank Lloyd Wright never speaking to each other again.
I'm planning to buy a bike and ride solo across the outback from one coast to the other. I want to dare all those critters they got there to come kill me. I may do it next winter, we'll see. It should be a helluva ride.
@@peterhughes7868 statwise it actually is. It is also has the third or fourth (can not recall) largest domestic attendance of any sport in the world. I have also lived in both states you have stated. I also am a huge rugby and football("Soccer supporter"). Love sports :-). I think people presume, because Rugby is the dominant sport in those states, however within the country of Australia, Aussie rules have the most attendances and supporters on the whole. Happy new year and hopefully this year is better than last, stay safe.:-)
Koori (also spelt koorie, goori or goorie) is a demonym for Aboriginal Australians from the approximate region now known as southern New South Wales and Victoria. The word derives from the Indigenous language Awabakal. For some people and groups, it has been described as a reclaiming of Indigenous language and culture, as opposed to relying on European titles such as "Aboriginal". The term is also used with reference to institutions involving Koori communities and individuals, such as the Koori Court, Koori Radio and Koori Knockout.
Cricket is our official national sport I think but I feel like rugby and AFL are overall more popular. NSW & QLD are huge rugby states, there is not really AFL here although we do have a few teams. AFL is a religion in Victoria, and is the most popular sport in the other states.
you know AFL was created by the Melbourne cricketers ? these days Cricket ain't much popular campared to AFL/rugby but cricket is considered as the most prestigious sports and the test team captain get honoured most after the prime minister, Cricket environment in Australia is great
Well, we fund our education funded through property taxes, so if the area is full of rich people buying expensive houses and real estate, the school is better funded. If you have money, you afford an education in a University or you can pull out a loan and be 30-120k in debt. If the education system did do a great job for you, you maybe able to get in on scholarships, but it's pretty rare for most people. Also, if you are from a wealthy family and your parents were former Alumni of an ivy league University, you can get into that University through legacy admissions. In fact, you can even graduate from that Ivy League University, still be an moron, but have a fancy looking graduation certificate from a distinguished Ivy League University and appear smart on paper. Just look at our politicians and media pundits. Obviously, how we do our educational system is the far more superior then other countries. I mean, just look at the results, we have a bunch of Einsteins here.
Apart from the middle aged guy in the cap, none of them really knew much and just guessed. I'd say pointing at Canada as an American has to be the lowest point.
Some of the comments you will find below are fine examples of how "hating" has become cathartic to many people and, like a drug, can easily become an addiction.
Cricket is popular throughout Australia however Aussie rules football is probably the most popular. It's the most attended sport in Australia. The only problem is the states New South Wales and Queensland rugby is more popular but in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and Northern Territory Aussie rules is huge.
Aussie rules and Rugby are two different sports and even rugby in Australia is split into Rugby League and Rugby Union. Rugby Union is more popular worldwide but Rugby League is more popular in Australia. Aussie Rules is more popular in the southern states and Rugby League the dominant football in the Queensland, Canberra and New South Wales.
Americans…we aren’t really exposed to much about Australia…here in Chicago where the video is shot… you can occasionally find kangaroo burgers on the menu…other than that it’s…the opera house…kangaroos and . It ends there.
Only eat farmed kangaroos one of the worst wormiest meats of all .. should know you use to slaughter them for dog meat had to boil the meat before giving to our pig dogs . See all the worms come to the surface .
As an Australian, it makes me wonder what do Americans learn in geography at school? Is it American map only? He was asking a group of what it seems like fairly educated people and they didn't even know where Australia is on the map. I'm not saying you have to be a pro in geography but Australia is a continent and a country so it's obvious where it is on the map. Also, I think rugby is the most popular sport. Fun facts, it's quite common to eat kangaroo since you can find kangaroo meat at most supermarkets. At least in where I'm from in Sydney
I wouldn't use interviews like this to represent anything meaningful. The creator could have filtered the responses to ignorant people because he knows people would make condescending remarks in the comments.
Americans who never been to Australia would not know what it is like to wake up and smell the gum leaves and pat a koala is really like. I am sorry I cannot adapt to snow and squirrels and chipmunks. I been to America and I am an aussie!
