Thru hiked last year, so I'm mostly here to watch and relive my own memories, but I'm super excited to watch others enjoy the trail I love so much too. Have fun, live every moment you can, take pictures with tramily, even if it's awkward, just do it so you have them later.

Hey, congrats on your thru!! I love a good awkward picture haha that’s such great wisdom.

Trekking poles often get loose but Leki has an easy way to tighten them. First unlock the loose part, spin that plastic circular thingy that has little ribs along the edge clockwise, tighten the flick lock. If it's too loose, unlock then tighten some more or vice versa if it's too tight. Leki made the smart choice of not needing tools to tighten it since they just get loose over time. Enjoy yhe trail!

If that doesn’t work you could probably get replacement flip lock from leki

Oh my gosh, this is great. I asked someone at the NOC and even emailed Leki about it and neither told me this! I’m going to try it. Thank you!

This is a good idea too. I haven’t been using them for day hikes but I’ll play around with them today and tomorrow!

Just a suggestion. If you're carrying AAA batteries for the headlamp, consider buying the Pale Blue Earth batteries. They are USB rechargeable and don't require a separate battery charger. They come with a 1 usb to a quadruple micro USB cord, so you charge all 4 batteries at once with just a single USB port on the battery bank. The micro USB cords plug directly into each battery.

Interesting, I’ve never considered that! I’ll look those up!

Thanks for the gear video! Adding a hose to a water bottle is brilliant! I like drinking out of a hose while hiking, but I rather have a bottle on the outside of my pack for refilling and for at camp. A bottle with a hose would solve the bladder vs bottle problem. So smart! Would love to see a vid on how you rigged that up. I'm also going to get a brush like that for my young girls who've shed many a tear after hiking all day and getting tangled hair. Thanks for the tips!
@LizardLopes
@LizardLopes Год назад
That’s great!! You’ll have to tell me what you think of the tangle teaser brushes. I have 4 now (one everywhere) and they’re so gentle but effective. The hose really helps! I think the visual of seeing the boss encourages me to drink more too. It’s super simple but I’ll share!

The sawyer blue coupler is a great new item that you might wanna think about.....It makes the CNOC bag to filter to bottle so much easier.
@LizardLopes
@LizardLopes Год назад
I’ve heard that! I have typically carried a 1L Nalgene and filtered into the wide mouth of that, then transferred to my smart water bottle. Since I’m only taking a 16oz Nalgene this time, that might be the move… 🤔

I'm hoping to do my hike in 2025. I was hoping for 2024 but I have to get surgery at the end of this year and my doctor recommended waiting at least 6 months and I don't want to start in June or July. It's a bit of a blessing because I have more time to save and buy lighter gear than I may have if I was trying to go on a budget. I'm loving these gear videos because I get some great ideas. I did buy a budget pack, a Teton Scout so that I can just put some weight in and go out on day hikes for training. I can't wait to watch your hike!!

This was good. I am only watching out of a general interest in hiking kit. I am never going to do a long hike but I like to have the least kit I can get away with on car camping. Getting to campsites by car, then quickly setting up is my thing. Then I go biking or sea kayaking. My car is a Golf, so not a huge amount of space for all my sports kit plus tent stuff, so I like to find smaller more compact kit. Scotland is often cold and wet, so reliably weather proof gear is important. Good luck with your AT adventure.

I'm in the same boat as you- I gleaned absolutely everything I could from reviews, gearlists etc on the internet before looking for gear as I don't have any family etc that have done any backpacking either. Nonetheless, I'm finishing up the last touches on my gear, and i'll be hitting the trail in about two weeks. Good luck out there! May we both safely make it to Katahdin :)

Oh my gosh I just got the Frogg Toggs UL rain suit last week, tried the pants out while picking up after my dog in my backyard, and the SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME. Literally less than 5 minutes after I unpackeaged it...huge rip as soon as I crouched down lol. Gonna give the rain jacket a go this year and hope it works out 🤞
@LizardLopes
@LizardLopes Год назад
Hahaha I’m glad it isn’t just me! Or maybe I’m sad it isn’t just me? I would love to cut the weight but rain gear, especially this time of year, isn’t something I want to risk failing. You’ll have to let me know how the jacket does for you! I definitely wouldn’t be against swapping the jacket around May.

I love the drink tube idea. How did you make it? On my previous thru-hikes the one thing that annoys me most of all is reaching back for the water bottle. I've tried a shoulder strap bottle holder and that didn't work for me either. Thanks and good luck. I'm sure you will crush it.
@LizardLopes
@LizardLopes Год назад
Super super easy! The tube and mouthpiece attachment are on my Amazon link under AT kitchen items! I just shoved the tube through a Smart Water “sport cap”/flip top cap, then screwed it onto the bottle and put my bottle in the backpack pocket, tossed the hose over my shoulder, cut it where I wanted the length, and added the nozzle. It comes apart and washes with my Dr Bronners soap ☺️

Wishing you all the best on your AT adventure. Curious if you come from a large group of "Gerigs" and if you might be related to any of us Gerigs in Oregon. There are at least two non-related Gerig groups out here (many in and near Salem, and the other near Albany, Oregon). My group came from what is present day Alsace, France in the late 1800s. Looking forward to your AT videos. Don from Oregon
@LizardLopes

How funny, Don! I married into the name almost two years ago and have met so many Gerigs. He does have cousins in Oregon, so possibly! My Gerig grandfather-in-law was also named Don!

Do you have an affiliate link to the sauve and muscle creams? Seems good at 1/2 an ounce.
@LizardLopes
@LizardLopes Год назад
Hey, I wish! I’m not affiliated with Super Salve, but I do have it linked to my Amazon storefront under AT hygiene and a few other places: www.amazon.com/shop/kelseeyoulater Thanks for asking! I am starting the trail with the super salve original, the calendula salve, arnica muscle salve, the outdoorsman cream, and the comphrey chapsticks. It’s basically all I take besides toothpaste haha I’ll swap to just the original salve, chapstick, and spf salve once winter weather is gone!
