Great video, Shuya! What I really like about your videos, is that is seems that the people you interview are actually giving their honest opinion. (In contrast: I have watched similar interviews with Japanese people where you see that they are too polite to give their honest opinion). I also really liked your own personal views at the end. Keep it up 👍

Thanks,Tristan. What a compliment! I was actually wondering if the part of at the end of the video where I give my opinion was necessary, but it was cleared up:)

It's funny some things they don't like are things many foreigners like about Japan. The point about "over" politeness of staff is a lot better than the indifference or outright rudeness you often get in the west. And caring about your appearance and weight is a positive compared to the normalisation of obesity in the west. Body positivity is all well and good, but promoting unhealthy bodies is dangerous.

Thank you for your comment! That totally makes sense and things always have both pros and cons. That's why I think it's important to see a thing in a positive way.

Nothing to hate about Japan. You have one of the most orderly and successful societies on earth. Be proud. Fascinating cultural. Your English is excellent Shuya.

Thank you for your comment and compliment:) I think that is actually true. What is bad for Japanese people may be trivial or sometimes even good for people from other countries. It was very interesting for me to understand this through this video and your comments.

Even in their expression of wanting to be less identical in thought and presentation they all presented the same thought. I guess they're all right :D

It's interesting that a common theme seems to be the belief that the country is too collectivist. When they're actually one of the least collectivist countries in Asia. Still way more so then Amaricans or Australians and I suppose those are the countries they compare themselves to a lot.
@shuya-sonoda
@shuya-sonoda 2 года назад
Oh really? That's interesting point. Maybe Japan is not a collective country but comparing company...? Anyways thank you for sharing your thought!
@myself2noone
@myself2noone 2 года назад
@@shuya-sonoda I think you still fall on the collectivist side of the scale, but much less so then say China or India.

Honestly: I've spent about 7 years working in Care Industry and Education Industry. In both of these I have to put my individual needs aside in order to SERVE others: To HELP others. Doing that continuously: It has changed me. What do I wish my society did more of? I wish my society was more thoughtful and considerate of others in public and in groups and NOT so individualistic and egotistical or simply HEEDLESS of others situations. My culture constantly pumps out "Me, Me, Me!" individualism and I don't think it helps make people feel better or be better people. I understand the burden the Japanese talk about: It's not easy ALWAYS putting others first and feels sometimes very exhausting. But equally, even in their criticism of this system they are moderate, considerate, articulate and come across very well! And that is because of all the things they criticize! Equally, I have to deal with systems that say they do one thing but end up doing another or not working at all or being really bad at what they say they do! In Japan the idea of people performing a service seriously is amazing in comparison. The only area I think Japan does badly: The Over-Time is excess. Balance of Life + Work is a better sustainable model and more in keeping with human or biological cycles and tempos and rhythm. The OT concept is incredibly CRUDE treating humans as mechanical which is a much less complex system than what humans are made of! That's a big mistake.

Interesting video. This was a good insight. I think the more people speak out about these things, the more likely things’ll change. Every country has its pet peeves and Japan’s no exception. I do hope things get better and more flexible in terms of mindset.

Why change something that is good. There’s something I wish westerners will change, that is to stop imposing their values on other countries and accept the differences.
@benjackson7872
@benjackson7872 2 года назад
@@darkcastle1489 It can always be better. You can almost apply that with anything. Some westerners do force their beliefs, but that’s not what I meant. Sometimes cultures have to change certain beliefs, or how they look at things, no matter where they are geographically. Both the East and West can learn from each other. Sometimes you need to speak out and other times, you just need to be quiet to keep the peace.
