As you might have thought, many people in this interview are most likely talking about imagining people from the U.S. We understand that when we say "foreigners" it should not necessarily refer to them. The world is more diverse and should be. However, Japanese people tend to think that way due to their educational and entertainment environment, and I was very curious as to why, so I conducted another video interview. In America, we generally think of “foreigners” as tourists, or travelers. When someone is here for educational purposes, they’re not quite so “foreign.” (If that makes sense, Lol!) In the case of someone immigrating from another country to live here, after they’ve been here for awhile, we tend to stop calling them foreigners. Example: A man moved here 3 years ago from Japan and his English is pretty good so he frequently talks to others; we are aware that he plans on getting his citizenship someday. More typically, we would say something such as, “That’s so-and-so. He’s originally from Japan.” So… At this point, he’s no longer foreign; he’s American, just like the rest of us are; but also happens to be Japanese. We would refer to him as Japanese American. (Japanese comes first since he was born there.) My grandparents immigrated from Ireland but as I was born here, I’m American Irish. Our country is a “melting pot” of various cultures and most of us feel that this is one of the greatest things about the US. The diversity makes it a very special country.

Ty for sharing that video ‼️‼️you're very correct about how they think foreigners are only in the US.. 😂 On the other hand 🖐️ I absolutely love Japanese people and I love Japan 🇯🇵 as well but since this video says its from January 2022 which now its April 2022, it doesn't seem that long ago and I'm just wondering if you in Japan don't have to wear a mask anymore? 🤔 Anyway God bless you and your family 😇 🙏 👨‍👩‍👦

The most beautiful thing is that all the japanese friends on the video talked without thinking, spontaneously correct words came along. We also envy japanese people for their clarity and organisation in their thoughts and words, their power is in the details. Full respect!

Interesting insight Shuya. Being an English person, it got me thinking, at 5:25 the lady mentions about being accepted for who she is. I haven't lived in Japan so I can't say from her perspective but the English are extremely judgemental on what you have, your status and how you look. I think the reason she might feel so accepted by foreigners is because when "we" meet someone foreign in England, you completely drop any standards or "englishism" you think should apply to that person because they're not from your country, therefor you don't have any predetermined thoughts except they're not going to understand English as well as you do. I tend to welcome anyone not from England with open arms and not judge who they are. With this mentality (I know not everyone in England thinks like this and this is from one persons perspective that lives in England) I think that's why she might enjoy interactions with foreigners so much :)

I found this to be a very interesting and thought provoking opinion. It is true that in the West, I have the image that status is more important than in Japan. (Although this may be true for some people as you say). Probably Japanese people also do not judge people from overseas by these statuses. I find this very strange. My personal opinion is that this is because there is no common axis of judgment in terms of whether they have assets, where they live, what university they went to, etc. It would be best if more people from different countries could enjoy interacting with each other, accepting their differences without comparing them. I am a foreigner living in England and I’ve never had issues of not being accepted. Yes, I am Caucasian therefore blend in easily. But all in all British people are very tolerant towards foreigners in comparison to many others.

What's interesting is that if you live in London, it's almost impossible to be judged and stereotyped so easily due to the extreme diversity, probably some of the best diversity in the whole world- even better than a large portion of American Cities. But I have felt like that same diversity is far more rare outside of London in other parts of the UK even though it's still quite good. What I will also say is, there seems to be a social meta developing where judgement stems more from your social standing as opposed to your skin or country of origin. For example, people are quick to judge anyone wealthy in the UK, but herald, praise, and endorse those who share pain that stems from poverty and the experiences and humour associated with that. There is also another social meta developing in which unproblematic people who are stereotypically kind and respectful get high praise and plenty of respect, but if you speak your mind too much, have any controversial opinions, or maybe you are just more outgoing and outspoken than the average person, you may be seen as an attention seeker or just annoying. However, within both these social meta, it seems there is still a place for you within society as we are surprisingly tolerant in the UK compared to other countries, the only issue is that if you try to maintain your behaviours whilst moving up in life (making more money, having more of a voice, becoming more credible), it becomes a lot harder for you to maintain your "problematic" behaviours and you will be criticised a lot more regardless of whether said behaviour is actually a genuine issue or not.

I'm British and I totally agree. I think we do tend to drop our standards/expectations when we meet someone who is foreign. I live in Japan and it seems like Japanese people do the same. For example; many Japanese people aren't comfortable with tattoos, but would probably be fine with a foreign person having them.

Sounds quite similar to Sweden. My experience as a Swede and having lived here my whole life, it took me like 18 years to understand why foreigners always think swedes are so nice, while I think most of us are absolute a**holes. We tend to be extremely nice to foreigners and very understanding and accepting. But to native Swedes can be very cold and almost mean.

I think everybody’s talking about the Americans - here in Europe definitely not everybody speaks English, the houses are not that big and some people are not that friendly after all! 😄

Yeah, it makes sense. We don't intend to talk much about people from the U.S. but, you know there are so many kinds of American comedy, drama, movie in Japan. I think that's why Japanese people tend to imagine people from the U.S. when it comes to "foreigner".

Always smiling all the time is a skill that is drilled in to us growing up, we have to look happy even if we are miserable. It's no different than maintaining a stoic demenor.

Cool video! I live in Japan (Mie) and I still don't understand the whole "I'm Japanese so I'm not allowed to have a free mindset" thing. Like, we aren't taught how to do that really in America we just do it? There's nothing beyond just deciding for yourself "I'm not going to care about this set of social expectations that don't make sense and anyone who has a problem with that has a problem with me". Like we know there will be consequences for it, but most people just decide that living authentically is worth the consequences.

Thank you for sharing your thought. I'm really impressed and totally agree with that. I believe that this difference in values is due to education. In Japan, we are taught to conform to our surroundings, and I feel that we do not have an environment that allows each individual to freely express their own opinions and develop their individuality.

Gotta agree, I see people in the video saying things like "I envy how foreigners spend time with their family" and I think, well why don't you? No one is holding a gun to your head and saying you can't, you live a democratic open country, socially people might not like it and there maybe some consequences about it, but if you want to do something as simple as that and you already don't agree with society rules then do it ? Why care so much about what others think? In the west we don't get taught to do as we please but we are encouraged to make our own minds up not fed a one way perspective about how to live

@@shuya-sonoda traditions are a form of education... But the values you attain or obtain in your life arent acquired through intent and thoughtfulness. They are informed by the peer pressure you are immured in. Cannibals traditionally eat their victims as part of a spiritualistic practice... And yet, in general, the world shuns this behavior. Two distinct and different tiers of value, neither of which formal education plays much part in. Shuya, your statement sounds elitist, where you elevate the japanese education as some source that clearly surpasses any other... This is too short sighted a view to accept for someone supposedly seeking truth. Progress, in every venue, has always been a SINGULAR process, and never a "we" one. The masses have demonstrated a contentment to accept the status quo, whereas ONE Einstein envisioned relativity. Galileo, told to recant his heliocentrism or die by the "church". ONE Rosa Parks on the bus, not "We".... What this suggests, and far stronger than "everybody does it", is that mass belief tends to be manipulation of the ignorant, and progress is feared even by us who truly need it.

My opinion is that Japanese, Chinese, Korean people are very well brought up, polite and respect their elders and culture. This is a good thing. I also think they are really brave to go to another country to live as a foreigner and educate themselves without family. We have a Chinese lady where we work and see how hard it is for her to communicate with us. As a matter of fact, she has taken to mixing with us 'brown skins' bcause we accept her for who she is and know the struggle of acceptance. We have taken her into our circle, she comes on holidays with us and comes to our homes for girly time. Unfortunately the 'whites' don't have anything to do with her, but she doesn't care cause she's got us and we got her back.

@@shuya-sonoda as an American in California, nobody cares about nationality or anything. Half my company is Vietnamese and the other is Mexican. I’m white and could care less where they’re from. We are all friends and do things all together and get along well. It depends where you live but most whites don’t care, id say if anything they’re more nice to people from Asian countries bc they’re curious about the culture and differences.

Wow, such wonderful insight. To return the thought, I envy how orderly and polite Japanese people are, there’s little chaos and the social rituals are so interesting. I would love to visit one day.

I envy about Japan how safe it is. I watched a documentary on Japan and it showed how elementary school kids were going as a group together to school, no parents around. My sister would have loved that kind of safety in Canada, but sadly she always had trouble bringing the kids to school until they finally hit High School, Gr. 8. and picking them up. My sister and her husband were both working so it was hard. I must say though overall the crime rate is going down in Canada every year, especially here in British Columbia Canada.

Nice video to give people some insights of how Japanese think of foreigners. However, this video doesn't really apply to Asian foreigners that can speak fluent English. We don't have the same leniency compared to foreigners from Western countries, and seems like we are held to a higher standard, in terms of room to make errors. I grew up in the US and speak native-level English, in addition to my mother tongue and Japanese, my mentality and work ethics are very American (gotta have my breaks, and no excessive OT). Too bad I still look Asian and they are trying to make me follow the Japanese social standards and work hierarchy.

Thank you for your comment. I know that there are actually people of Asian descent in the West (especially in the US), and many of my favorite RU-vidrs are of Asian descent. I think it's very important to communicate properly and try to understand each other, because it's still difficult to understand a person's values through language and appearance.

Hello, sorry 😔, I do to not understand your name...it would be nice to,.some how intergrade both names with a /. Cultural and American. Anyway. You should be proud to be an American ( witch I'm sure you are) and try not to feel bad about the standards. Reason, your true decent is of another culture. As mine, I am also born American but my " true decent is almost full Irish/ Scot and luckily... American Indian. My grand parents came across on the boats from Scotland. Our great granddad married an American Indian. Giving me part of the American gift...so thankful. Also, Irish/Scottish are a great historical influence in the world in history. Though I feel blessed and lucky having 3 of the greatest cultural backgrounds...I was also Born American. Though many people tell me I should be so proud of my heritage here (though I am), I AM STILL AMERICAN, living our ways ! No slack cut no where !! But, I am also proud of that. And I realize, I am a part of some of the best global heritages brought to the American table of cultures. And we are pressured and treated a bit different because that's why our families were gifted to be ALLOWED here !! To bring in diversity !! So of course we are treated as our ancestor's here, that's the whole reason and part of the American dream, diversity, luxury, teaching's, Freedom, ETC !!! Thousands never get in and dream too !!! So be proud we live in pretty much the greatest county.and you know many people of your hertiage envy you. We are a part of the pride and beauty of what America's represent !!

I love how honest their answers are and the girl who said that they accept her for who she is was super nice I know not everyone is like this but that is a characteristic that I'm always trying to work on. To treat people the way you wish to be treated and to accept their faults not because you have to but because as another human being we are all imperfect and we should be aware of such things but in some small way we can better one another because we are all just trying to live and deep down a lot of us want acceptance and to accept others as well. Sorry for my long philosophical ramble.😂

Great video Shuya. I just subscribed. I lived in Japan for a year a few years ago. And I really envy the way that Japanese people get together at parties with close friends and have fun at izekayas. Drinking and laughing together. In America friends go to bars but it's not that same. Your next video you should ask foreigners what they envy about Japanese people.

This was so interesting!I never gave much thought to what foreign people thought of us Americans but I admit I expected to see negative comments! I was so wrong!!!! Every comment was really kind and funny! I think that is a great Japanese point that I envy! A lot of us Americans can sometimes expect negativity when we have no reason at all !!! This was a great experience for me as an American to think about something that had never really occured to me before! What do other people think of foreigners....like what kind of perception they have and Ifind it really fascinating!!!!Thanks so much for this really unique look at someone else's perspective 🤓🤓🤓

The thing with weight is actually really true here in Japan. I personally think a lady looks best when she isn't all too skinny, but in a sense I don't even use that as a criteria to determine if a lady is pretty or not; but in Japan, guys fuss about that so much and this adds to the stress on ladies that try to appeal to just not guys but even their fellow ladies, because ladies would criticize you for looking "ugly" or "fat" first chance they get :p

Absolutely it is true and I totally agree with you. Plus, here is a sarcasm. As you said, boys tend to judge girls based on their appearance and sometimes say "ugly" to them, however, that boy tends to be not superior in terms of his appearance as well.

When Japanese mentions "foreigners" they meant westerners / Africans. I would really like to see their view on South East Asians / Europeanns since we don't look like a westerners but is still a foreigner.

Nice video! A small grammar point: you should say "gain weight" not "get". For example: I always gain weight around Christmas time because of all the sweets." You can use "get" with "fat". For example: "If I eat too much, I'll get fat."

Interesantes opiniones sobre lo que envidian de los extranjeros. Soy de un país latinoamericano y en general somos bastante amistosos, ya que entablamos conversación con gente al azar (por ejemplo, cuando viajamos en autobús). En mi etapa universitaria, tuvimos maestros japoneses (debido a un programa de JICA), al inicio eran bastante tímidos; pero a los 3-6 meses de convivencia, eran más abiertos con las personas. Nueva suscriptora. 👍

I am a foreigner, just american. It's really strange to think that people live in houses smaller than mine in my own country and especially outside of mine. I mean there are apartments the size of my room (10x12 feet or 3x3 meters not sure what Japan uses) it's crazy. Also about the height thing, I don't know about Asian people but I know that especially in America but all over the world really. Generations of families are getting taller and taller. for example in my family my grandparents are around 5'5 and all my uncles and my father are 5'10 - 6'+ my one aunt is 5'7or8 And their children would have grown much taller had they all not have had children with short people lol.

If the interview was the other way around, I would say what I envy about Japanese people is there is little or no street crime in their cities. This is impossible in The States.

cool video, just want to point out that in English you dont "get weight" you "gain weight", everyone will understand what is meant by "get" but "gain" is the native way of saying it/will come across more fluent. keep it up!

I learned in a hard way that here in US, friendly and friends are two different things. Trust me, Americans do not speak up their minds like in the movies. The Japanese perspective is so interesting: In youth to seek freedom and the West has this aplenty in self-expression. Yet, as I grow older, I despair of this in the West, and in contrast the harmony of Japanese culture appeals more and more. There is a balance. I wanted to disagree with the lady around 3:23 --Many Western companies if they have important deadlines will ask the employees to work overtime, offer some sort of incentive etc. Now you could say No, but that can cause issues, so many of my friends accept the overtime and work. My brother works in a healthfood warehouse, he is asked all the time if he wants to work a few hours extra, and press him if they are short staffed. So IMO it's a generalization to say what she did, depends on the company and the work. Ask some nurses, doctors, ambulance drivers, police etc if they work overtime and you will be suprised.

honestly i have nothing against japanese people ( it saddens me that there are some americans that are still racist to them) im american but of irish, german, blackfoot & cherokee descent, and im totally in love with these people, their beauty, their physical appearance, their culture, food, they seem awesome and humble as well as very sweet, hardworking, and dedicated in their passion in whatever they want to do. love you japan, kentucky USA 😍🥰😘💞

On the last lady's concept of beauty standards: For example she might feel she has a certain rating in Japan, but as she is exotic or different, in another culture she would be felt to be 10/10 or top in terms of beauty. The dynamic is different and that is a consideration. That said for long-term family stability, the stats are not very strong and so a clear common ground is needed for that much more important question: To raise children in a happy & functional and thriving family environment.

I know that standards of beauty for women vary from country to country and community and community. I also believe that we should not all have the same standard and compare ourselves with it to determine if we are close or not. There are many people in this world who are simply beautiful in appearance, but what I consider truly beautiful are those who are pursuing what they want to be, and I feel that such people exude beauty from the inside out! This was so interesting to hear (from the USA) as it reinforces what we hear about how Lucky we are in the world and our ways that are different from most other countries. Though we love when foreigners come to our land because they bring a new insight of other countries, ways of living, culture, diversity, schooling, self worth, ETC. They bring to life a different blend of what everyone's future can become together 👍🥰

Thank you so much! I envy about the diversity in other countries. We Japanese people share same culture and value, plus speak Japanese which is incredibly complicated and difficult language. So I think we should communicate with people from other countries each other and accept the difference and values. I believe that changes Japan a lot.

For the record, most Americans (US) are told to be early for work, so that much of the experience is common. In the US, however, things like traffic or personal issues are used as mitigation, so while the threat of consequence is there (being fired for being late or missing a day is typical), in general, we accept the fact that control is more limited than our expectations allow. We say "shit happens" to sum it up.

That's interesting and I know people work much harder in start up company. I think there is a difference in terms of "the way of thinking" towards OT between Japanese and Americans. It doesn't always mean there are fewer OT in the U.S..

English mentality to time is that it’s personal to each person experiencing it so it’s a sentimental currency and we are frugal 😅 some pay for success and some pay for their passions but we all pay with time. Also beer ‘o’ clock prevents us doing overtime 😂

Guilt based culture vs Shame based culture. Thanks to Christianity, the west is individualistic with a guilt based culture. That is, when a westerner messes up they feel guilty first (God is watching), shameful second/third/not at all. Eastern culture was formed around "group think". This assists in forming a cohesive group out of a large body of people (this also assists a ruling class to maintain control over a large body of people). When an Easterner messes up, they feel shame first (my family/community is watching), guilty second/third/not at all. Depending on the situation.

No. But historically after the Meiji Restoration, which cultures do you THINK the Japanese did their research on? Was it South America? Was it Africa? Was it Asia? Or was it Europe and North America. Bear in mind they achieved these gains ALREADY by 1895... a rapid process from the trigger of 1853. Remarkable even. Is this the answer to your question? It might not be.
