I talked to a number of people in the Philippines on my last trip there about what they think of China and the Chinese people. I talked with foreigners and locals and they all had the very same thing to say about China and it was not flattering. Why do they have these views and where do these sentiments come from?

As told by Prof Martin Jacques in a talk show in Manila, Philippines knows more about US even more than their Asean neighbors. They love to be in US earning USD as drivers, maids, etc. In summary, their mentality is still entrapped in their colonial past despite calling themselves as free and democracy. It is going a roller coaster of flip flopping between the two superpowers if you followed their politics. Let Phillipines be the sick man of Asean first, Anyway there are many other important matters to deal with their rest of Asean nations. That's the power of western media despite having the best universities, think tanks and freest media channels in the world. Even the Americans themselves are brainwashed with misinformation and so called alternative facts about the world, more so about US's formidable competitor, China, they ever encountered in the past century. 😂

There is a bit of envious racism in SouthEast Asia about China because if you look at the who's who in the business world in these countries, many are Chinese owned, ie Chinese who are citizens of those countries. That plus the media makes it easy to villanize the Chinese. Having said that, these same countries are asking China to help them with their infrastructure. Even the RP was about to grow its rail infrastructure with China under Duterte, but no longer under Bomg Bong Marcos. Marcos is now asking Japan and the US to build and fund these projects. We shall see. I lived in the RP on and off for about 35 years because my first wife was a Chinese born in the Philippines.(20 years ago). I now live on and off in Shenzhen, China and Los Angeles. Philippinos are very friendly but corruption, petty thefts, murders, and drug addictions permeate their society. Many Americans married a Pinoy girl and retired in the RP. Twenty years ago, there were about 50,000 American expats living in the RP so Americana was a lifestyle that was looked up to and a lot of the entertainment and movies had an American bent.(Obviously American occupation of the RP was also a factor) Those that got a good education, migrated to the US so the US has a big Philippino population, an estimated 4.5 million. One of the RP biggest imports from the US are dollar remittances from these American Philippinos to their relatives in the RP.

For those keen on history, here are some: 1) When Philippines was colonised by Spain, the territories of Philippines did NOT include South China Sea; 2) When US defeated Spain took control of Philippines, the territories inherited from Spain did NOT include South China Sea; 3) When US defeated Japan in WW2, US returned the sovereignty of South China Sea to China (at that time it was GuoMingDang party that ruled China). as China was the legitimate owner which was recognised internationally include US and UK. When Philippines gained independence (the Philippines country was formed) after US withdrew, the territories of Philippines did NOT include South China Sea. When the housing speculation burst they said China is in trouble but when the housing prices goes down they also paint a doomsday scenario. When there is inflation and everything is expensive and unaffordable they said China economy is going bust. Then when prices of goods drop they say the same doomsday narrative. Inflation is bad, deflation is also bad, housing prices low is bad, high is also bad. So if everything is bad in whatever situation then there can never be good. And that's what they would have you believe. There us a good advantage here for the naysayers, they kept their populations oblivious of how bad actually their own situation is.

Chinese really don't care about what Philippines say. We all know that Philippines are acting on behave of US. The conflicts are artificial. Just following orders. But in couple years, when US asks another nation to make conflict with China, Philippines will suddenly become China's friends again. They will blame their previous President for bad behaviors and now they are willing to "set aside the differences and work together." China will smile and gladly accept the gesture and will work with them, just like working with Australia who had conflicts with China several years back. It is a never-ending-game of conflict and propaganda. US needs to stay in Asia under the narrative that it is protecting the region against "Asians themselves." The "acts" of having conflicts are important to support such a narrative. For China and Chinese, they just don't care. They have seen through the acts. In facts, most people in Asia and the world have seen through the acts. But we are living in the world of "make believe." So, let's play along.

Just today, Japan's NHK International again reported on an ethnically Chinese former mayor of some place in the Philippines who was extradited from Indonesia. The report made her out to be some Chinese national infiltrator pretending to be a Filipino national who was enabling gambling and people trafficking. Whether the claims against her are true or not, if this was exclusively the kind of news I heard, I would think the same way as the expats and locals there, too. NHK also mentioned China's plans to place anti dumping tariffs on Canadian canola oil like with Australian wine some years ago. I wonder what Canadians think about this
@winterchill5501
@winterchill5501 10 дней назад
Yes it is wild how they treated that mayor like a mass murderer the way they hunted her down and made her the focus of every headline, and the funny thing is, the government agents who went to Indonesia to arrest her just treated her like a C-drama celebrity, having selfies taken with her. A lot of Filipinos I asked about this think it's all a charade and diversion that the incompetent government puts on so nobody notices that the food prices have shot up, and the lazy president does not go to visit disaster zones that were struck by heavy floods. If they can't solve the problems they'll just keep the people entertained and preoccupied with other news.

Remember Jake Sullivan visited Canada before going to China to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi? After Sullivan left, Canada announced a total 106.7% tariff on Chinese EVs, and some % on Chinese steel and aluminum effective October 1, 2024. Why put tariffs on Chinese EVs when there is no Chinese cars sold here? BYD was just planning to find a Canadian partner to import BYD cars next years. And the usa has confirmed the effective date for tariffs on Chinese cars. So why does Canada puts tariffs effective before the us master? GM cars company is jumping for joy saying that they totally support Canada on this Chinese EV tariff. Right now Canola producers in Canada are calling the government to solve this problem. They are complaining that they get the hits while others industries get the benefits.

China’s government has a different approach than what people in the West are used to. It’s not just about being authoritarian; it’s more about making sure the country stays stable, safe, and prosperous. There’s a kind of understanding between the government and the people: the government works to improve the economy, build good infrastructure, and maintain security, and in return, people follow certain rules, like limits on political speech. This approach is rooted in Confucian values, which focus on the collective good, respect for authority, and keeping things running smoothly. Most people in China today, especially the younger generation, don’t feel repressed- they live with a strong sense of security, affordable living, and modern comforts. The surveillance and censorship are there to prevent chaos and keep things stable. While some might see that as restrictive, many in China feel it helps guarantee the kind of freedom they care about-like being able to live without worrying about instability. So, it’s less about the government just controlling people and more about finding a balance where everyone benefits from a stable, growing society.

I lived in Taiwan for 10 years and visited China a few times. BIG difference - perhaps not in day-to-day life (going to work, eating out, putting kids in school, etc...), but politically and socially, the Taiwanese people are engaged in their own government - they don't just watch while some ruling party decides for them what they will do as a country - they have a say. They vote for all levels of government. They have total free speech - they can openly criticize their government, their leaders, their political parties, etc... It makes a big difference in how they feel about their country. At the same time, their economy is doing great, crime is very low, it's just as safe walking the streets at night as it is in Japan, etc... Oh, and they have complete religious freedom - the government does not involve itself in religious affairs in any way. All reasons why the majority of Taiwanese people don't want to be ruled by the PRC, ever.

I'd be more interested is asking what Singapore thinks of China? The PI has moved itself to the lowest status of the SE Asian countries, however nice and beautiful the people are. But Singapore, they got it going on. But then again are managed by ethnic Chinese. Go figure.

As a Singaporean I would say ASEAN should proceed sign the South China Sea code of conduct without Philippines. Quite a number of us know Philippines is doing all the shows in South China Sea for US and Marcos Jr himself trying to protect his family’s billions of corruption money withheld by US and he is sacrificing his people’s lives (so far only one finger lost but not caused by China). Interesting to me that westerners love Singapore despite its autocratic gov style. And recently have been crazy over Vietnam, never complaining it is communist. So clearly the issue with China is not the gov but something else. The sense of losing in an economic competition is all I can think.

Putting things in the right perspective, the negative Filipino perception of China is not on the people but it's CCP govt's aggresive behavior of grabbing parts of Phil territories ( China is arbitrarily claiming the entire intrntnl South China Sea w its dash line encroaching on EEZ seas of Phils,Vietnam,Malaysia,Indonesia & Brunei. Aside from that,during the China-friendly posture of frmr Phil P Duterte's time,China had free access to Phils' EEZ sea but devastated it w its destructive-to-sealife & ecosystem excavations for its militarized artificial islands,harrassments of Phil fish/naval boats ALL in Phils' own EEZ sea.Add to that China's attempt to grab islets,reefs,shoals of the Phils.Reaon why now Phil P Marcos is taking a strong stance,overwhelmly agreed to by the Filipinos. Thus the current conflicts w China not only w Phils but other cited nations which seas also are encroached by China's dash line claim yet all still maintain healthy trade w China.
