I like how Mishima is the only non-PT confidant who isn't an expert at something, but is simply a friend, yet his confidant perks are some of the most OP in the game. He's the embodiment of the power of friendship :D
It seems that Tora's Confidant may be a callback to Persona 3's Social Links where Makoto was not really absolutely necessary, but he was still good for the characters to have around anyway, at least as a listening ear. Such a thing, simply lending an ear rather than actually trying to change how anyone thinks or their lives; giving them the agency and independence to do things on their own and make their own decisions without really throwing in your own two cents; is more important than anyone really gives credit for. Sometimes even giving advice is not as good of a move as just listening and supporting.
Yeah I've always leaned towards just active listening/affirming myself 😊 But to be fair to Joker, I don't think that kind of methodology would've been as fitting, mainly due to how P5's narrative is structured. It's one huge heist game, and in-lore Joker was always seeking something out of his confidants... like he doesn't start off as wanting to get to know these people just because. Though he is a compassionate person in the end. overall he just strikes me as more pushy/get involved in your problems kind of character compared to the P3 protagonist.
@@LadyVirgilia That is very true, he is very much the type to take action, and obviously it is usually very much warranted with the many Shadows he has to take down and change the hearts of. Sometimes it is better to get involved, and sometimes it is better to leave it in the hands of your friends. Unfortunately at times it can be difficult to tell which situation is the best moment for which approach.
The other day I wondered, if I had a Persona... Who would it be? And the name that jumped to my mind as if it had been waiting long for that question was "Don Quixote". And I honestly think it fits. A man who would rather lose himself in worlds of fantasy and longs for a life he will never get to experience. With a short temper and a tendency to mess up, but a desire to be good for those around him deep down. Of course, when I think Don Quixote, I think his Arcana would be the Fool. But I believe at this point in my life, I've lost my chance to be the Fool. I'm the Tower. Trapped in an isolation of my own making. A direct result of my failure to maintain meaningfull connections or listen to my many mentors. I can only hope, one day, the tower will crumble and I'll just be a hermit in its ruins. I'll do my best to topple it, but its hard to do that alone.
To be blunt, all of these characteristics you've listed sound exactly like the description of an overzealous SJW... I mean in the sense of thinking of yourself as a force for good or even an important hero, all the while while doing things that only make you irrelevant or even outright detrimental to the rest of your community. Then again, people with that sort of profile are typically _never_ as self-aware as you're being in this comment, so I'm left wondering how much of this apparent self-deprecation of yours is legitimately warranted.
My Persona would be Sekhmet (a demon from the SMT games that has yet to show up in a Persona game) of the Strength Arcana (Strength is depicted as a woman petting a grown-ass lion and Sekhmet is modeled after a lion in the Egyptian pantheon), symbolizing my gentle dominance over the most feral and unhinged parts of my personality (and also the self-doubt, emotional outbursts, and general lack of resolve that comes with the reversed Strength meaning)
Sojiro saving my ass in the harem route will always be the greatest moment of trust and understanding I've ever witnessed regardless of how wrong the whole cheating situation is.

You have me a better respect and appreciation for Ohya than I did before. I've never been against her and actually liked her, but I did find her plot to be boring. Having you explain it like this and give better context to everything for all of the characters has only made me love the game more, I'm glad there are people out there doing work like you are!
The thing with Ohya is not that her Confidant is bad, it is just comparatively weaker compared to the rest of the cast. Most of the confidants are rather engaging in the story they tell, but Ohya for me wasn’t that engaging. And there are her Confidant perks which in my opinion just suck. They affect the security level which isn’t that big of a deal if you know how to play the game. It isn’t that difficult to avoid the shadows in the palaces. This makes her confidant perks completely irrelevant. You could also make the case with Chihaya since most of her confidant perks revolve around seeing the perks the other confidants give you. Why don’t you just go through those confidants themselves and actually unlock them? This makes the perk irrelevant. In fact you could make the argument that Ohya’s perks go against the game’s own design. Because we are supposed to be *Phantom Thieves*. The entire point is we sneak around, not taking the direct route through something. And that even lines up with the PT’s modus operandi. They use the metaverse as a sort of indirect route to right wrongs because the direct route of doing so (reporting Kamoshida, Madarame, Kaneshiro, etc the police) doesn’t work. Ohya’s confidant perks go against the game’s themes and game design.
Personally, I realized that it dismays me when some people ranked some of these NPC confidants really low on their tier lists, because if I've learned anything from Vanilla, it's "be kind, you don't know what someone is really going through", because I get the vibes that each and every Confidant is being judged/condemned for what the public believes them to be, when the reality is that they're all much more than what people think of them, so I'm honestly disappointed when so much of P5's audience still goes by first impressions with this game, or even worse, they go "I've gone through your whole story, and I still hate you"... Perhaps what everyone else learned from this game is "Don't let yourself be affected by what others think of you"? Because if that's the case, I find it rather odd, hypocritical even, that we ourselves judge/condemn some of these characters just like society in-game does...
I mean, to be fair these are all fictional characters. They don’t have inner feelings to get offended. And they don’t actually have inner battles going on. So treating them like you would real people doesn’t really work.

I can definitely see where you are coming from- -but I prefer Darren's comment because it's not so much about "respecting fictional who don't exist" but "respecting the author's message and intent in creating these characters." In my philosophy, if you disrespect or critique an author's and artist's work, you disrespect or critique that author or artist. This involvess for anyone and anything from movies, comics, books, games, cooking, coffee-brewing, competitions, etcetera, etcetera, and all of their individual components that each person works on. If you so much as say that something doesn't matter or isn't good enough, then that person's work and to an extent that individual themselves at that particular moment in the project's lifetime wasn't good enough or mattered in the project themselves. If that person or their ideas could've been lost for any reason, from the most in charge director or boss or screenwriter to the workforce hands of the animator or actor, then would it have changed nothing to actually improving the work itself? Or would we have lost something integral to the work or something that someone would've loved to have seen in the work? These characters, when critiqued, should not be looked through the lens of "The puppet being moved about or the actor following the screenplay" but through the lens of "the author, the puppeteer behind the curtain who's controlling everything and what they are trying to say and is it something we should objectively or want to subjectively listen to." That is the approach that we are taking, do any of these characters actually matter or help the overall narrative of Persona 5, and Virgillia here gives us a definitive "YES, ABSOLUTELY, WITHOUT A DOUBT" throughout her entire video. Each of these characters matters to the player and changes everything not just in the gameplay rewards but in the narrative experience as a whole.
@@StoryTeller796 I think you have a very skewed opinion of criticism dude. Very rarely when someone critiques a work are they critiquing the author personally. They are critiquing the work the author did. And the purpose of criticism (at least criticism made in good faith) is so the author can improve. It’s not to make it so they don’t matter or feel defeated. I don’t know about all people, but the reason I criticize a confidant like Ohya (easy target I know but bear with me) is so that the confidants of the future can be better. Ohya as a confidant is not outright bad, she is just outclassed by all the other confidants both in terms of how engaging her confidant story is and what confidant perks she gives to the player. You also talk about the confidants contributing to the overall narrative, but you forget that 1. None of the confidants are fundamentally necessary for the game’s narrative except the ones that are unlocked automatically. The game doesn’t stop the story if you don’t do any of the confidants. 2. This is a video game. Its gameplay is important just as much as its narrative. And the fact of the matter is that not all of the confidants’ gameplay contributions are equal. In fact, in Ohya’s case they could be actively working against the game’s design since leveling her confidant makes the stealth part of the palace exploration more and more irrelevant.

I was thinking in technicalities so much, I was getting so bogged down with the "Marvel fan" mentality that I forgot to properly edit my mental approach to P5. Yeah, I have a pretty skewed opinion of criticism. After all, I don't have too much personal experience really 100% giving expert criticism towards others, more just listening to others give criticism and then just trying to pick and choose what criticism I can use to get people to either be better or to better appreciate me and what I'm doing. It's for the most part a defense mechanism, and a way to skew anyone's viewpoint into making my position more favorable. There's the other fact that I didn't have any clue of what I was expressing in regards to how criticism actually is meant to be given in good faith during the time of me writing my argument. There's also the fact that I was just trying to defend the purpose of Vergillia's arguments. 2ndly, yes, I get that most of the confidants don't really affect the general plot and I should've thought about that before I made my statement that they do. Thirdly, Ohya's boons really and honestly are anti-gameplay in every sense of the word and I do agree that an editing of her rewards would've made them better, like an increase in strategies to find treasure demons in Palaces or, you know, something like that. And I can imagine a professional writer criticize Ohya's whole story. Overall, yeah, my argument could've used a whole load more thought into it because, I just wasn't thinking straight and I doubt I ever will for the rest of this argument, but I can try.
Thank you for this! Some of the non-party arcana are a little difficult for me to wrap my head around, especially ones like the Tower and Devil. I haven’t been able to find any write ups that really explain things in terms that are clear to me. I often get the upright and reversed confused because the write ups often use similar or even synonymous words for both. But you explained them in a way that really made sense to me! I can’t pinpoint exactly what worked, but your phrasing just clicked. I think the arcana that fit me are the Temperance and the Hanged Man. I have a bit of a struggle with healthy balances and judging when is the right time to make sacrifices for others. The one that is most interesting to me over the course of the series is the Moon arcana. I think the exploration of the characters’ mental health and occasionally destructive behavior is really fascinating. It makes it more satisfying when they work to sort things out near the end of the link. Can’t believe Persona 5 let Joker have three dads: a Coffee Dad, a Gun Dad, and a Politics Dad. What a game! I also love that you add how the stories apply to your own life. It adds a bit of warmth to these videos. The side notes show just how important a well crafted story is, not just from a basic enjoyment perspective but from an applicability one as well!

Tora is my favorite confidant, as an American millenial and what little i know of japanese culture i feel that the older generations in charge are more concerned about themselves instead of guiding and preparing us to take thier place when our time comes. Thats why persona 5 strikes me at such a deeper core then the others, so when i see tora (fictional he may be) i shed a tear when he gave his big speech at the end and wish our real world leaders could be more like him
I'm personally fond of the Death arcana, both for the P5 social link and for the archetype. Unpredictable upheavals happen. Things change, and there may not be anything you can do about that. Will you try to cling to what you're used to, or will you accept your new circumstances with a smile? Of course, embracing your new circumstances doesn't mean giving up on your goals, values, or identity. Takemi-sensei demonstrates this wonderfully when she continues her research without the university, and even reminds herself why she started her work in the first place after hearing that Miwa-chan is dead. It's important to neither be swept away by the change nor reject it. The Death arcana doesn't mean actual death and isn't something to be avoided-- not that it can be, anyway, since unlike the Tower that one builds for himself or the Judgement that all must face, the Death arcana is completely unpredictable. One might go through incredibly numerous life-changing events in a short period of time, leaving little to nothing of what his life used to entail, and one might go through his entire life without any significant changes. Death is an opportunity for new life, for a new perspective, for a new set of rules.

Thank you once again for the video. In regards to the Arcana, I thought Faith is which I resound with, but I am starting to realize that I may also share some traits with the Sun myself. There was a part of me that wanted to expand my influence in more platforms like Twitter and to gain followers, but I realize that with the change in the algorithm, it isn’t worth it for my mental health anymore. There was even a time I wanted to pursue Acting for camera and voice, but after failing my audition, I realized that it isn’t as glam and fam as people make it out to be. So I’ve decided to take a small part-time job helping a catering company, and I’m in a happier mental state since, even when the pandemic happened, I didn’t frown because I had the help of wonderful friends, family, and even help from a job seeking service. And because of that, I got my old job back when the pandemic slowed down. But anyways, here is a gift of thanks and an early thanksgiving gift. I hope you do well. I know this may be controversial but Mishima is probably my favorite confidant due to how much of him I see in myself. We’re both people who are annoying leeches to our friends and are both great with tech, and as well we both struggle with wanting to be more than the loser that gets left behind. Anyways great video.

As someone who has trouble writing people different than I am, seeing characters through tarot archetypes is a really interesting way to do it: although I don't really think there's a collective unconscious aspect, I do think that trends in stories and people shows that humans do have similar ways to approaching life around the world. Ohya isn’t the only NPC Confidant who approaches Joker before Joker approaches them; Yoshida does too. (You can see Yoshida giving speeches early on, but it isn’t until he sees you working your butt off at the Beef Bowl, and comments on how unjust it is that the restaurant is so understaffed, that you can actually interact with him.)
To be honest I would love to see a Persona game like Tales of Beseria (a game where you are arguably the vengeful villain for most of the plot), like a redemptionless Count of Monte Cristo, of the Oceans movies (where the thieves win and have a happy ending) where the role of protagonist doesn't mean righteous I think it would be incredibly interesting to be playing as the anti hero even straight up villain getting back at society for their revenge and benefit, they may change it and themselves for the better but it was for their own selfish drives. Basically imagine combining Joker and Akechi, you have a villainous protagonist gaming the unfair system with their power but also an underdog story about a Found Family if outcasts coming together and growing as people but simultaneously bringing out some of their most destructive aspects (I imagine this is how the mafia and Yakuza started). The fool is a driving force for change but like for Maruki that doesn't mean it necessarily in a good direction, many of these characters could have been swayed the same way
Having started playing the series with P4G on Vita (I bought a Vita 110x - WiFi/3G - specifically for P4G on-cart), this has been a wonderful watch of you diving in to the characteristics of the confidants in P5/R and how they relate with their Arcana (also; Yoshia has a real strong conviction to keep trying to be elected on his own terms for over 20 years since his fall from grace in the 1990's).
Another thing to match Takemi's Death Arcana and the theme of transformation is her change of VA between the original P5 and Royal. Sure it's just little more than a serendipitous coincidence, but I think it's worth a mention

A small point towards Iwai getting to have his family and including Joker in it, is that in the end, if you completed his Confidant, he uses his underground connections to keep anyone from harming Joker while he’s in juvie. Heartwarming

I just found your channel yesterday, and I'm so impressed not only by your insight but also by your courage in sharing so much of yourself and your life in these videos. It would make me feel a little vulnerable to be so real on the Internet, but that sharing makes the videos more resonant.
I loved these videos, they're so well done. I was also adopted at a young age and have the same relationship with my parents where they're no different so it's always fun to see those stories done in media.
My favorite arcana is hard to pinpoint, but I do find I relate to the Moon often. I use tarot readings as a tool for untangling my own thoughts and wishes, like inkblot tests or like when you flip a coin to find out what your reaction to the choice was, rather than to make the choice for you. However, I believe there was something truly exceptional about the reading that began with the Fool in the "questioner" position as the first card, and contained several other major arcana including the Devil in a sort of "bad future" situation, of what would happen if you didn't take any action. I credit that reading with finally pushing me to work for myself as a freelancer
These Jungian archetypes are certainly fascinating. I see a bit of myself in the Emperor (in my interactions with my best friend/roommate, house guests, and friend group in general, and, in the past, my fellow students), and in my very strict concern for principles. Also in the Hanged Man, albeit for entirely negative reasons, putting off truly dichotomous decisions for as long as possible with not entirely positive consequences (Iwai also happens to be my favorite side character in P5R, but that's more to do with his style, job and general demeanor than it does with his his storyline, the latter pertaining to someone far more accomplished along his life than I am). And in the Sun, with the positive message of relentless hope no matter how brutal the adversity or how dire the situation being an aspect of me that's always existed no matter what else has changed. The negative aspects of the Moon also very much fit my younger self, although I am not certain if I have truly overcome those issues or merely suppressed and hidden them away form my day-to-day thought process (regardless of the fact that I did gain a better understanding of what they are). My mother, meanwhile, has strong shades of the Empress (both the good and the bad), Temperance (...again, both the good and the bad), and Death(the part about moving past loss and constantly beginning new journeys in particular). My father, I guess, may embody some of the negatives aspects of the Tower, which is why can't extrapolate much else in his case. It's so absurdly difficult to get him to open up about anything that is simultaneously serious and personal that I feel like even after decades living around him, I still don't know the man's deeper self at all. The Magician meanwhile is an archetype I don't relate to very much, and in fact it feels like there have been multiple moments in my life where I very much would have needed someone who fulfills this type of role, but either didn't even realize it, and/or could not find such a person. In fact, that may still be the case...
In terms of the NPC Confidants, Takemi's is by far my favourite, and i think she was the first confidant i did way back in vanilla p5 when i was 11-12 (Ik i'm making alot of people feel old rn lmao). This mainly stems from a core memory of mine of being in the hospital on my birthday as a child. I guess 12 year old me just associated her with an, at the time, scary week of my life as a kid. I'll be honest, i don't recall much of her confidant back then other than always going to her for meds and being annoyed when people in game would talk bad about her.
😂 you really got to give it up to Sojiro in the Valentine event this man smooth talked 10 ladies including his own daughter that Joker wasn't cheating despite the fact all 10 confronted him togetherbin no uncertain terms Really adds respect for Futaba's mom to not fall for the lv. 99 skill master that is Sojiro, truly an awe inspiring authority figure
As someome who likes Mishima and is a big fan of Ai, I think the Moon Arcana is such an underrated and relatable one. Sometimes to this day, I struggle with insecurities, but it's having great friends and being myself that got me more confidence. Suemitsu tho... nah... he can kick rocks😅
