I understand what she means as her being an elder Chinese person thinking its "harmless", but the younger ones saw this in a different light as unfair. It sucks that this stuff even still goes on but please keep in mind that they are blissfully unaware of the negative repercussions that black face with white people presented for black people throughout history here in America. If they only knew, I wish someone sat them down and showed this to them and even the way Asians are perceived by white people and everyone else in American media..maybe it'll wake them up to whats really going on.

when I was still living in China, we had an African American teacher who taught us English. He was the first foreigner I've seen, and all my classmates were so curious about him and followed him everywhere. We would play with his hair and cling onto him because he was super tall and always smelled really good. I think many people in China have never seen foreigners, and it's important to be educated so we don't disrespect them and their culture.

@LetMeSeeThis99 I was born in a Post Soviet Union Country and I can confirm it is ABSOLUTELY true. In the 90s and early 2000s, people were doing sometimes black face on TV. However, it didn't carry the same historical baggage than in the Western Countries. Actually, I don't even remember black people being portrayed in a negative way. It was usually done to show them as exotic, as the only point of contact we had with people of color were african students comming to study in the country. In that regard, American Movies did a lot more harm, as even without black face, they usually showed african-americans as criminals. I find it a bit arrogant how people assume that history of the World is equal to the history of the Western Countries. However, it is the prevalent way of thinking and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

The African American lady hit the nail right on the head! A lot of racism in China comes from ignorance. It doesn’t come from hate, like it does in America. As a Chinese American who came here as an adult, I grew up in Hong Kong and could not imagine having a black friend back then. Now my best friend is a black woman. Ignorance is not always hate.

@Pteromandias
@Pteromandias 3 года назад
This is where this goes nuts. You make a lot of assumptions. "Racism in America" isn't quite the certainty you make it out to be. Getting shot while literally shooting at police, running them over, fighting with them, committing some violent crime, or being a general antisocial a-hole isn't an example of racism. It simply isn't. Unless you believe that the very existence of laws protecting peoples' lives and property is somehow racist toward blacks, but that says more about you than anything. Like, what, you think they find it inherently more of a struggle to resist murdering and stealing than other people, so that laws against those have a harsher effect on them? The second great leap you make is that any of that is motivated by hate. Are you a mind reader? First I don't trust your intuition of what racism even is. Let alone what your intuition into what is going on in other peoples' minds. But let me speculate about your motivation, where your bigotry comes from. Is it ignorance? Or just plain hate to accuse people you know nothing about of "hate."

@Paul Smith ask yourself how you would feel if you are constantly subject to racial discrimination. My best is black and we both exited a store once and the alarm went off. A saleswoman called out after her, not me, despite the fact that we both exited at the exact same time. This happened in California, a very diverse, inclusive and liberal state. I can only imagine what goes on in the rest of America. And I have nothing against white people. My pastor is white and I owe him my life for standing by me when I was severely depressed. We should always be aware that good and bad people come in all shapes colors and sizes.

I saw that the older Chinese people were more inclined to be more prejudiced and not as open-minded but still had a little willingness to understand more about Black people. The younger people were immediately more open-minded and looked beyond most stereotypes and expressed that communication and getting to know people better could reduce and prevent misrepresentation of Black people and all people and cultures. Great video!

WARNING: THIS POST IS NOT SOLICITING ADVICE OF ANY KIND!!!! IF YOU HAVE ADVICE DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT POST IT HERE UNLESS YOU ASK FIRST!!!! This was very enlightening as a black American. I’ve began looking at different countries to visit and see where I may want to live in a couple of years. I loveAsian culture and was excited to possibly visit China one day but after watching several RU-vid videos of several black female US Expat’s all but one say to steer clear of China because it is extremely racist. As a black American female the absolute last thing that I want to do is move from one generally racist country to another. This video did seem to help a bit and as with most things I’ll just have to go and figure it out myself. I agree with the young black lady that it did appear that many of the Chinese may just be ignorant but to be honest I’m exhausted from “educating” people. I just want to be free and live my life as an educated, humanitarian, woman of God who is open to experiencing different cultures and environments. I do understand that sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know and sometimes your intent was not to be insensitive because you just didn’t know. I’ve been guilty of saying things that everyone I knew said similar things but when you get around someone new or someone younger it may not be Ok to say or feel that way. Life is a journey and let’s all learn daily to love each other more than the day before.

I just want to clarify something. China is not "extremely racist." Some Chinese are just ignorant because Chinese had never gone through the "enslave African" history that European colonist had, Chinese also never had the blackface culture when African were discriminated. It may look extremely bad from the African American perspective, but that is just the complete disconnect due to culture and history. If you ask about blackface history, Most people in China would not know about it. From the short clip, it sure seemed like it was ill-advised but intended to be humorous...Also, youtube is probably not the best place for finding out how things are. Please ask through your social network for someone who actually lives/has lived in China, and ask directly, as I have seen too many bias things that I just want to debunk, but got my comments deleted not for speaking against them, but merely questioning them (sure showed where freedom of speech is on youtube).

It is often biased, just like when George Floyd was murdered on the street, I search everywhere on youtube, and in the first few days, I couldn't find the full video on the incident. there is an agenda behind it, trying to paint it in favor of the police, and labelling the victim and the onlooker as trouble maker. what I said was don't trust youtubers, trust people in your social network, people you know, ask them directly about what they know about China. Thank you for giving us her subtext. ;) There's always going to be mediocre and bad theatre and film productions. The weird thing with racial caricatures is that they are *always* naive. Sometimes, knowingly so - like in comedy. Sometimes, just naive by ignorance. And sometimes, because the actors trying to do a role just aren't very good. In this case, I think it was that last one.

The double standard makes me think that Westerners are hypocritical. Russell Peters should have something to say about this issue. I've seen many of his talk shows, and when Mr. Peters "mocks" Chinese people's racial characteristics, Chinese people just decide it's funny, and no one thinks it's a discrimination. And Mr. Peters has also "mocked" the big asses of Latin American women. The issue of race has become an ideology in Western countries and in the minds of people, seemingly because of the shameful racial crimes they have committed.

I found that a lot of them asked me about my race and then told me that it was good I was mixed race not fully black... so yeah. Also someone literally said they preferred that I had a white side. That's when I realised that a lot of chinese people see black people in a negative light. It was so weird seeing the performer are not actually African people, but then it goes the same with other countries as well(such as Russian dance). I don't think the reason behind this was discrimination. However, lived in America for years, and learning about the cultures here certainly makes me feel different when looking at the show.

To the Chinese people who think it is just entertainment, so did I. I am black and I too didn't understand the offense. But after learning the history of degrading a race for "entertainment," it can no longer be entertainment if the people who are being impersonated are offended. Ofc the Chinese wouldn't be offended if somebody imitated them, since they didn't have to go through years of dehumanization by these exact actions. Why would the directors make her imitate a black person if there are black people available? It's obvious they were trying to belittle black people or else why would they feed stereotypes and hire a Chinese woman to play a black person's role?

The reactions from Chinese were probably what expected from my experience in China. When I was working in GZ there were quite a lot of Africans and other foreigners like me there and I remember asking a bartender how come they so nice to foreigners no matter what colour and she said that foreigners bring money into the city and create jobs. They generally don’t cause any problems ( although she mentioned some problems with some Americans). It was also interesting there seemed to some “discrimination” against Chinese from outside of Guangzhou… probably because they competed for jobs. That African American lady at the end of the video was a very clear thinker, insightful and very cool! What a great perspective! Interesting and thought provoking video. Keep it up! 👍👍👍

This video in particular was enlightening for me as a Kenyan whose flag was used in the skit's background; the railway project depicted is a Kenyan project called SGR. The video has been watched here and was considered offensive by several Kenyans because we tend to be generally familiar with world history and know a little about the history of 'Blackface' as it was done in America. Others have not taken offense to it and have brushed it off as silliness/comedy. The reactions vary depending on how much history the person knows. Thanks again for the great content.

I’m a Chinese living in the US and I grew up in China. To be honest, Chinese people have a narrower beauty standard due to the country being largely homogeneous. People often prefer fair skin to dark skin, in their own history prior to the influence of the western media. I was even “discriminated” ( commented on, or made fun of)occasionally for having darker skin when I was young. But Chinese people generally care more about a person’s education, profession and financial status more than the skin color, or religion. I remember having my first foreign English teacher from the US who is black, and really nobody seemed to hold any negative opinions of him, in fact everyone was very excited to talk to him. The Gala show having a Chinese with heavy make up to appear black, is IMO very inappropriate. But it seems to be more of a stereotype, which isn’t necessarily discrimination, however it is what leads to discrimination sometimes. But the differences should be noted here. And without watching more of that Gala show, I don’t want to be presumptuous about the plot portraying racism. It could be and it could not. Though I agree this can make some feel uncomfortable and sets up a bad example.There ARE racists in China, like all other countries. But IMO most people could be ignorant rather than racist. They haven’t been in contact with any other races. One interesting thing to share as well, is that white people can be discriminated in China as well. It is due to the fact that some of the earlier white immigrants being undereducated, arrogant and nasty that built up a notorious reputation. For those who haven’t been to China and simply assume that many Chinese people are racists, I would encourage you to live there for a while and collect some first hand experience by yourself. Like one of the interviewees said, most of the misunderstanding is caused by lack of communication/interaction. We should work on breaking stereotypes of all races.

I worked for an ESL language school in Asia and was told on more than one occasion when I was screening applicants not to forward applications from black teachers because parents didn't feel they received as prestigious an education if their teacher wasn't white. Anti-black racism is widespread in Asia but it certainly takes a different form than it does in the US.

@@ifeeltiredsleepy I worked in China for 15 years and I can attest to what you are saying. Many black native English speakers were often overlooked in favour of whites from Northern European countries who often were then encouraged by their Chinese employer to say they were from the USA, UK etc. I myself witnessed such discrimination first hand at a university in Beijing where students were milling outside a classroom waiting for their law lecturer to arrive. A few minutes later a black guy arrives and one of the students told him he was in the wrong classroom. So the black guy left. A few minutes later the black guy entered the lecture hall and the Chinese guy (and his friends) who told him to leave were mortified to find out that the black guy was in fact their law lecturer!!

That lady in the turtleneck and glasses was the most important part of this video. She had a strong belief, didn't think it was offensive in comedy, also considered sensitivity, but then when compared to her specific reflection, she said it's a huge problem and not okay after she thought about it like that. Now particularly, I'm not going to focus on the subject but rather the fact we saw a human empathize and turn back on neglectful thinking with a sense of empathy. What you just saw in that little clip is the switch we will all have to flip to fix this. Awesome. Crazy about the Superbowl comparison lol

I noticed a common theme of "I believe this because I saw it on tv." If black people weren't always portrayed as criminals or poor on television other counties wouldn't view us like that. People need to keep it in mind that other counties don't have the same racial exposure as we do in America, their only exposure to black culture is from media. Thats why I'm grateful for movies such as Black Panther or other creative projects that add another dimension to the black perception.

It's really interesting hearing the chinese people's perspectives. western media tends to portray chinese people as rather arrogant on a cultural level. But many of the people seem pretty fair-minded. I was a little surprised that the person who seemed the most culturally progressive/liberal actually had the most negative impression of black people. As an Asian American it's very interesting because, like how the african american woman said there is a difference between african americans and africans, I feel there's a difference in mentalities with chinese in China and chinese americans or overseas chinese. I thought the opinion of the guy who said he 'believed in China' was interesting because he reminded me of an average middle aged american patriotic moderate white guy in that they just have a pride in their country and belief that it stands for unity and good. It was interesting to see how china is in some ways actually more progressive than America in terms of welcoming other ethnicities into their nation as a whole. In that respect it seems to me more similar to French people in that as long as you are willing to become French then you are accepted as French. I feel America is less culturally accepting in that sense. Anyhow, a very educational video.

An American won't feel the same sorrow towards Chinese cultural revolution as a Chinese would. And that's ok. Just like Chinese do not give a shit about American 9 11. Joking about 9 11 is considered offensive to some in the US, just like talking about the Chinese Cultural revolution might offend some Chinese too. You will be most likely be offensive to at least some people around the population of the entire planet no matter what you do. It is all merely cultural differences. To make every action that people do to be "reasonable" is inconsiderate and disrespectful toward their culture. Furthermore, it is also impractical, since it wastes personal energy, hinders the speed of information transformation and harms freedoms of speech and expression. Therefore, I think a better way to deal with hate speech is to not take offend.

As Chinese I have to admit that racism is in Chinese culture, most of us are not aware of it though. It's very common for a Chinese to make a racial comment, reckoning it's just for amusement. But as the black girl at the end of the video described, Chinese's racism has nothing to do with hateful feeling, it's more from the lack of manner and knowledge. That's why I hope the new generations with more education can improve on this. I'd personally apologize for any of discrimination ever occurred to other races because of what we Chinese did.
