In my case I passed the exam in the early 70's but in a car that only had oil pressure and battery charging warning lights. Basic motoring only in those days.

"The check engine light means that the engine is faulty" Ah no. The check engine light can mean almost anything, it can turn on for something as simple as not screwing on your fuel cap correctly and fail to create sufficient fuel pressure.
Fun fact the oil light on most cars is nothing to do with the oils level, it means low oils pressure your car can be full of oil and still have low oils pressure if there is a major problem but if you have let your oil get so low it causing low oils pressure you have done some serious engine damage!
