Becky talks about how big your pasture needs to be to keep horses, how big her water trough is, what kind of shelter she built for her horses, and also how she built the gate for going in and out of the pasture.

Before anybody goes and gets a horse take the time to learn about horses. Take lessons, lease a horse. It's not all just "so much fun ". Boarding and keeping your own horse at home require different amounts of work. Now that I keep mine at home about 70% of "horse time " is really "picking up poop" time. It's a ton of work and almost requires a lawn mower and or tractor. I don't have either and it can be back breaking and exhausting at times to try to keep up with things. I still think it's worth it to give my guys a safe and permanent home, but when it's raining and muddy and you're pushing a wheelbarrow full of poop up a hill with water leaking into one or more of your boots, not everyone will feel that way. So know what you're getting into because once you bring home that animal they are relying on you to keep them alive and healthy and safe.

Leasing isn't always necessary, but I agree. Horses are a lifetime commitment and they are quite expensive and time consuming

Why don't you connect the horse to a plow to pick up the poop?

sam jest you don’t need to know how to ride in order to own a horse. Horses aren’t just for riding, they can be just companion animals or used for driving.

This video is very good, but I wouldn't use barbed wire, it's one of the cheaper options, but with horses that aren't trained or with foals it can be dangerous as they can cut themselves

My horse pasture gate swings both ways, and every pasture that I boarded at had gates swinging both ways. The public boarding pastures would have up to 25 horses in them, and we got in and out without any problems with horses pushing on them to escape. I much rather have them swing both ways and being able to get out of the pasture rather than be pinned against a gate I couldn't open against their weight. I, like you, like you, like to fill up the water trough manually so I can monitor the water intake. However, when I boarded, automatic waterers were always used for the water trough and tiny waterers in the stalls, are great labor savers and horses drank just fine. My horses lived for years in large pastures without any built shelters, and would use the topography and trees to find the most comfortable place to be for them for different weather conditions.

Becky, hello. My first view of your work. VERY nicely done. You are a RARE horse woman because you talk WITH your views, not at, nor OVER them. So many horse women seem to give off the appearances of "nose in the air" to other 'lesser' horse people who may not have as many horses, as expensive of a horse, or ranch, or gear and I find that attitude 100% against the entire notion of what a HORSE is. A horse is curious, he is not better than the rest of his group, she is not better than the lower ranking horses. They all love and appreciate each horse for what they can offer to the herd. Well, we equine ladies are all part of a herd of horse lovers and kindness, support, balance, and empathy should abound. Thank you for your very balanced offering of info. :)

nice. we keep 2 Paso Fino mares in a small paddock about 150 x100. they are happy, healthy and tame and friendly. the two things i would add to the health aspect in keeping down cost is Learn how to give your own vaccinations and deworm yourself. feed lots of hay (we have a dirt paddock)and feed the best quality feed you can afford! i say if i can't afford to feed this certain feed that is very high quality to the amount of hosea we have, then it's time to down size. we had to downsize 3 years ago because we moved and feed prices and hay went sky high. we're in mobile Alabama. and the only problem we have with shelter is the large amount of rain. so we do just a rain shelter. i love your channel. we're on a little under 2 acres and looking to get a few goats to raise to sell to others for meat. and chickens for eggs. i love that you are in Florida because we can relate as far as weather goes. we did get lucky in being in one of the few non flood zones in our county, i can't wait to grow our little place! I'll be watching more. best wishes Becky!

Keeping the drinking water moving also keeps the mosquitoes from laying eggs. My friend's water tank has a filter system and self filling water valve... It's great until the first freeze...His shed is like yours but bigger. The boards slightly spaced to keep it from getting too warm inside... Rain only comes inside when the wind is blowing at about 15 to 25 MPH...

I think the water in the water trough should be a bit cleaner. I thought you made the horse shelter pretty good, but I'd make it a bit bigger and more open. I think the extra flop on the gate latch is so frikin smart! I can't tell ya how many times new people to the barn would leave slack and the horses investigate and bad things happen...

How to handle water when it's freezing ? Also I rent an open lot to someone who has horses, and last time I visited, there was no water, no food, all 4 horses came toward me, which is unusual... I know he comes every few days, moves the horses between different places, so I suppose he feeds them and gives them water at the other place now, where the stables are (less space to move around there, the reason he rents my place), but how long are they comfortable before suffering from hunger and thirst ? There is no grass left, only some trees, and they are starting eat some pine needle on the trees.

I would like to add that it’s probably not the best idea to get horses unless they are your passion as they are a lot of work and can get very expensive especially it there’s a problem. How you’ve managed to own horses for 20 years and never had any problems is hard to imagine. I would like to add however that yours do look happy and healthy. 🌸
