This cake was popular for over 300 years? You can find receipts (or recipies as we now call them) for similar seed cakes spanning from 1591-1920! This dessert changed a lot after the invention of baking powder and soda but let's see what it looked like all those years ago. This is a cheap recipe that uses 8 cups of flour to 1 cup of that expensive sugar. By this period white flour was common though it had a higher moisture content than today's flour.
