Prions are what scare the beejeebus out of me. My professor said they are proteins fold a certain way, prions fold the opposite and take the spot of the normal ones. Then you are left with unfunctional proteins. He said its like the difference between the left and right hand.

to me the worst part is that they take a long time to break down in the environment and can't be eliminated through any traditional means. think about our big pathogen boogeymen: hiv falls apart in hours if it's not inside a host cell, c. diff spores are still susceptible to industrial cleaners but is actually best thwarted by handwashing, toxic black mold can be scrubbed out with paper towels and vinegar from dollar general. but the best we can do for prion diseases? test, report, avoid, and hope it doesn't spread to other animal populations.

Sometimes this time of year, young "button bucks" or buck fawns get very energetic and will run, jump, and "mock fight" other deer in the group. They are almost as big as adult does but don't have any antlers, so it's likely what you saw was a buck fawn. To our knowledge, running is not a sign of CWD. In the reverse, deer with CWD become more lethargic over time.

The problem with CWD is its a prion. What is that? In my biology class my prof explained it this way. Stay with me. He said what is alive? That's hard to explain. He then answered it this way. What is a dog? If you cut off its ears, is it still a dog? It's nose, is it still a dog? It's legs? It's tail? It's a funny looking dog, but still a dog. Well, you cut off It's head. It's dog meat, but still a dog. Or is it now not a dog? At what point is it no longer a dog? Then he circled back to what is alive and prions. Viruses, bacteria and prions will all make you sick or kill you. A bacteria is a bug. It has its own cells, it is its own creature. It has cell walls, enzymes, it's own DNA, cytoplasm, everything. It's easy to kill because it is its own creature. It lives next to your cells, its a neighbor. It built a house on an empty lot. A virus on the other hand is different. A virus lives in your cells. It uses your cells to reproduce, your cytoplasm, your cell walls. It's just some errant DNA that gets injected into your cell and takes it over. It's like a squatter in a house in your neighborhood. You are the city and the houses are your cells. They are more difficult to get rid of because you would have to destroy your own cells, and your cells look like your cells whereas the bacteria look like invaders. You can't tell them apart until they pop and send the viruses off to other cells to infect them. You can catch a messenger traveling between cells, but once they've infected a cell, you can't evict the squatter. So now prions. They act like a virus, they live inside your cells, use your cells to reproduce, but are they alive? How do you kill them? Mad cow is prion. It can "live" outside your cells indefinitely where a virus can't live outside your body anymore then 20 minutes. If you took a cow infected with MCD and slaughtered it, took its corpse, incinerated it to 2000⁰F for a day, where anything known to "live" would be dead. It is now considered sterilized. Take that finely burned ash, inject it into a cow and it would immediately get MCD. Take that dirt from a field that had a cow that had MCD and inject it into a cow, now positive with MCD. How do we kill this? Is it even alive? Mad cow and this are both prions. I'm open to suggestions.
@icspn
@icspn Год назад
I want to continue your metaphor and explain why it's so hard to eliminate prion diseases. If bacteria are unwanted neighbors and viruses are squatters, then prions are horrible, MC Escher buildings. Imagine a house that looks like a house outside, but inside it's useless and unrecognizable. It's twisted, and wrong in some way. Maybe there's a staircase that goes nowhere. There are rooms with no doors, or doors with no rooms. In some way, the house is fundamentally wrong, and useless as a dwelling. The building stands, but it can't do anything, it just takes up space. And to make matters much, much worse, it's infectious. The houses next door start to twist and change, then the ones next to them. There's no way to fix the houses once they're twisted up, they have to be destroyed. But because they look like normal buildings outside, no one notices that the city is dying until it gets really, really quiet. And worst of all, it can spread between cities. Where did it come from? How does it spread? No one knows. If this sounds alien and horrifying, yeah, it is. Prions are super scary, and not well understood. Don't mess around when it comes to CWD, or rabies, or mad cow disease, or any other prion disease.
@Joiner113
@Joiner113 Год назад
You're correct about the soil remaining infectious. However, this paper states that incineration using temperatures above 1000°c destroys prions implicated in CWD. doi: 10.4161/pri.2.4.7951

Big question is what are these deer being fed? Antler growth supplements? Could GMO crops be a contributing factor? Hard questions nobody wants to look at. We know mad cow prions came from feeding herbivores feed made from other herbivores. Who was the genius that came up with that idea? If we’re not looking long and hard and talking about the possible causes will never contain or eradicate this problem.
@paulrun111

@falineistired

even though deer are herbivores they've been known to eat carcasses of dead animals, including other deer. cwd can persist in the environment for years and is thought to be spread by not only consumption of infected animals but also through bodily fluids like saliva and urine. an infected animal could be spreading the disease everywhere it goes for months to years. i would hazard a guess that after the deer dies it spreads cwd to the soil / water where it died, putting all the deer who eat and drink from those places at risk.

Why don’t we do this, why don’t we finance scientists to find a cure, or preventative measures for CWD? And introduce it to Corn, I ain’t saying give it away, but a cost effective, quick way to ensure deer in your hunting area are treated would be through a food source. Just a thought, and as far as those areas that are “no bait” zones, we could use the feed in the Spring or Summer months when hunting season is out… just a suggestion.

Manitoba has been without a case for years til last year so they have opened up mulies to hunting, which was prohibited before due to consistent low numbers (tags are just $5.50 each) on the border zones touching the US or Sask. In exchange we have to submit the heads for testing, but honestly I'm looking for meat and also fighting that disease is more important than a head to me.

CWD is a misfolded protein disease AKA Prion Disease. They are hardly understood and they really need a lot more research. Trying to manufacture a vaccine for a disease that is just misfolded proteins without targeting normal proteins can be very difficult.
Год назад
we can vaccinate against viruses, bacteria, other such pathogens that enter the body. but prion diseases are caused by proteins in the body replicating incorrectly. they fold incorrectly, then make other proteins around them fold incorrectly, until proteins in the brain are folded incorrectly and build up leading to death. we cannot vaccinate against any prion disease because it is not external pathogens causing it, it's the body's own cells replicating incorrectly.
Год назад
vaccines trigger an antibody response so the immune system can fight against alien pathogens. we cannot make a vaccine that fights against prions, because it's the body's own proteins folded incorrectly. we can't make immune systems distinguish between healthy and unhealthy proteins.

The answer to your question: They have and are putting forth the effort. Many different groups of researchers are actively looking at the CWD problem and seeking solutions. Our organization has been active in trying to get more financial support for those research efforts. But one thing to note: The "solution" or "solutions" that we eventually find may not come in the form of a vaccine (which would be difficult to deliver to wild deer anyway). @@michaelwells1783 Even without eating fish or animals it is still a fantastic hobby to enjoy in your life. Let alone hunting or fishing for food. Being in the presence of nature has shown to have fantastic health benefits for people, both physically and mentally. If people are encouraged to live and outdoor life and they educate themselves on the public health aspects of the natural world they reside in, it furthers the chances that they will support conservation efforts, whether local or on a larger scale. The NDA is almost more of a conservation organization then it is a hunting organization. They have a large range or resources educating people on how to manage property, remove invasive species, and determine what a healthy deer herd looks like. You should check out their articles and see if you can encourage the young ones in your life to conserve the natural resources around you. If you don't they might not be there for the future young ones to enjoy.

It is what it is, nothing anyone can do about it! And maybe those deer supposedly testing positive we’re building immunity to it as well?

I am here to learn. Just sick that humans mostly hunt the biggest, most beautiful animal for trophy instead of just a healthy one for consumption. Kill the ill and survive by only taking what you need

When the WHO is involved and recomend something you better do the exact opposite... i will still eat it with or without CWD ..they just wanna find a reason not to hunt and eat healthy meat ...

Bottom line - is it an actual issue? Or a money grab?

It is an actual issue. No one is profiting off CWD. It is a major drain on agency funds and manpower that could be used for better things.

That's a lot of deer you have killed.. Understand if they are ill but don't see the fun in killing a healthy deer I think it's sick

Most people tend to kill a deer for the meat. I’m the south, we hunt and process the meat to place in our freezers for use throughout the year. It helps cut down on my meat costs and it’s more fresh than most meat you’d buy at the grocery store. Many people process their own meat or know of people that are reputable in processing their meat.

Humans evolved as hunters. Its in our nature. It isn't "fun", it's necessary

Unfortunately, humans have killed off a lot of the predators that would keep the deer population in check and destroyed a lot of land the deer (and other wildlife) lived on. Now that the deer populations can grow without restrictions they can starve to death come winter time, which is why hunting is unfortunately necessary.
@BillionairesArentYourFriends
Yes, an overpopulated animal that has destroyed other animals, but because they're not the ones being shown and addressed by the generic public, no one cares about them. They graze and destroy so much in their path. I'm not a hunter myself but I have absolutely no issue and support hunting during season, and think it's very necessary. Most people hunt for their meat that hunt. They're not the guys hunting in safaris and hanging up these massive lion heads above their fireplaces...they cut up the meat and eat it. Usually very resourceful about the deer as a whole when dressing them.
