A Stamkos deal around ~6.5x4 sets a really nice precedent for hedman to take a similar deal for the same term. Both guys are aging nicely and nice round 20 year careers all with one team sounds like an absolute dream. Stammer retires with the Team, Hedman gets to wear the C for a year, and if he so chooses, he can go home to Sweden and retire from Hockey after spending time with Modo.

@@yellowsnowman9157 He's making 8.5 right now. The last year of the contract might be rough, but he still clearly has plenty left in the tank. If you think we're able to acquire anyone who can match the importance to the team + his production for that cap hit, you're actually a buffoon.

I think you’re way off on Stammer like you were with Vasy. I Think the no contract talk with him hurt his performance in the beginning. No mater what they say it plays with their head. Headman your right in they had no defense core to help him.

with Stamkos i think it's not the numbers he puts up, it's his leadership that is the most important for the team. i can't think of anyone else that could be the leadership and face of the franchise. that said if he wants to stay in tampa im happy if they offer him less to get the team defensively sound. this years 5 on 5 was bad, and that's something they can work on with a bit of cap space. i feel like Hedman is piece we can not afford to lose. we've seen how the team plays without him or our other top blueline guys. it's a tough call, i'm not sure the team will play the same losing any of the veteran core. i don't want to see Stamkos go but if he decides to get a big paycheck somewhere else for the last few years of his career i can't blame him.

Weve all seen whats happened with ovi… there comes a point where a roster spot and ice time gets handed out because its “what they’re owed” theres no reason so follow suit with that garbonzo. Give them medium level contracts for a few more years. Let them stay rooted and play for what they’re worth at this point in their careers.. or let them walk to make more money where they choose. JBB will probably be generous though. If he’s handing out stacks to the likes if cirelli and cernak then the stars are going to get taken care of. Its time that we make people earn their money though. We got lucky with hagel playing up to his potential. But he needs to stop throwing the bag at a player the second they play slightly above average.

I think they will trade Cernak. They could fetch value for him. The guy is a tank, he’s only 26 and has plenty of hockey left in his career. Plus he’s got two cups and that experience is invaluable when adding that into your top 4. Could see Utah grabbing Cernak… that gives us cap relief for Hedman and stammer

Can only hope. Cernak is a turn over machine and makes so many mistakes. Plus he isnt healthy almost all of the time. That contract is brutal

Why not pay them almost all their money in signing bonus so it doesn't count against the cap? Vegas just did that with there new star. Hedman is playing great. You are way off on him.

It all counts against the cap. If signing bonuses didn't count against the cap then the cap would be meaningless. The cap hit is just average yearly earnings across the contract. Hanifin getting 1M base salary and 8.5M signing bonus first year with a 7.35M cap hit because he only gets paid 5.7M the last four years of the deal. His cap hit is still the same 7.35M those 4 years.

@@snowman653 100% false. Hanifin contract is 58.8M over 8 years with half as signing bonuses and half salary. 58.8 / 8 = 7.35 which is his cap hit. If signing bonuses only counted as a 10% his cap hit would be (29.4 + 2.94) / 8 = ~4M.

I just remembered an even better example to illustrate the point :) Stammers current deal is nearly all signing bonuses. He got 68M over 8 years. Only 1M base salary per year and the rest 60M in signing bonuses. Still his cap hit is, or was, 68 / 8 = 8.5. :)
