2 yr white belt here. I'm competitive with pretty much all other white belts at my school (and can even get a submission here and there from other white belts at my level), but I still get my @ss beat from the color belts. I still got a long waaaay to go. Oss!

Great Video. We go from White to Green in Nova Uniao before Blue. I think it's an interesting intermediate belt that I haven't seen other schools do. Green is that White Belt who has the survival skills and is very preliminarily starting to understand positions/position before submission and has 1 good sub from guard/mount/back/side. Blue in our schools is definitely that first "putting it all together" belt where you decide what you want your game to look like, you experiment a bit, while tuning up your fundamentals. Our Blue to Purple belt timeframe averages around 3-4 years.

In our school purple belt is considered expert level rank. Our purple belts are really good. Honestly our white belts are savages after just 2 to 3 months rolling 3 times a week.

I'm assuming that your gym has everyone doing a lot of drilling. Based on my experience repetitious drilling is the main factor for practitioners who have constant success compared to others who have good moments but always struggle with timing and fluidity because they haven't spent enough time drilling their techniques.

Yeah same. Bro the other day we spent 50 min drilling and 10 rolling. We usually roll 25 or 30 min (I go morning and night) but theres days where we just drill too. One or two full class sparring a week. 15/20 blue belts were just given out. 10 of us remain training consistently lol. 6 purples all train consistently. I feel like theres gonna be a bunch of color at my gym in the nxt 2/3 years

Is it possible for a white belt to already know which guards and positions are best for him and develop that early on? Would that help or stall my improvement overall? I know all the things a blue belt can do, I just haven't earned my blue belt due to the pandemic ( year and a half studying/training at home). I actually feel like a new blue belt working towards my purple belt. Sounds strange I know, but I have a weird time line of training due to the pandemic. Two and a half years training at the dojo (we switched ownership midway) and then a year and a half studying/training at home with my brother.

You cant really know which guard works best for you until you have tried and successfully used them against an upper belt (purple and up) things that work and white belts and blue belts might be your favorite move but might never work on a high level guy. So short answer... no
