I started with a traveling studio with 2 godox ad200’s. Then one after the other my whole studio is battery operated with 3 ad600’s and 2 ad200’s, and my ad1200 pro when I do dance portraits or with any movement. The one thing is nice is I can use these lights inside and for outside portraits. I am slowly starting to focus more on studio portraits. But 90% of my work is outside portraits or weddings. But out of everything you order I’ve been working with. Flashpoint/godox and glow softboxes with great success. It takes time to figure out what you want for studio equipment, and I never sat down and ordered everything at once. It was always one piece at a time. Until I had enough to do studio work. And I only have a little section in the front of my friends business for a studio. It’s probably 14 feet wide by 25 feet long. So I am limited at times. But what you ordered will definitely get you started doing studio work.

I’ve bought several Glow EZ-Lock softboxes. They’ve always included the egg crate grids.

I`m an ambitious hobby photographer who started in the 1980s ... until now I`m using several TTL system speedlites all bought second hand and a matching TTL radio trigger system, Nikon i-TTL in my case ... I now have a total of nine i-TTL speedlites that I can use in three groups of three if the situation or my taste requires it if you`re a beginner or on a budget I would always recommend bying second hand or trade-in gear, I've only had good experiences with it and saved a lot of money over the years ... if something breaks, which can always happen, even with newly purchased gear, replacing doesn't hurt the wallet that much

This was the one I needed before I started buying gear So my suggestion for a tutorial would be making sure we acquire and maintain big enough clients to pay New York rents. Because if we can pay those, we can pay it anywhere!

Westcott rebranded a Jinbei AKA Orlit 400 watt light a couple of years ago so that brand might be worth a look.

I'm always bewildered a bit when photographers say pros use Profoto - but why. Tell me what Profoto does that a Godox AD600 wouldn't do of comparable Ws. And I don't mean just peaking at specs - more about real output as a final photo. I would think that modifiers would be integral into this equation because many of us do not shoot bare bulb/reflector straight from the strobe. Personally I CAN afford profoto, but I don't see a compelling case to shell out that kind of money. Convince me otherwise. I'm not trying to start a brand war --- what does Profoto do that my Godox ecosystem cannot do - when we consider the final output. Thanks for considering this point. Great content and thank you for sharing.

Thanks Daniel for the video. For my two bits; most of the photographers you see on RU-vid have been doing the job a long time and when they looked for a complete system there was only Profoto or other similar brands. I do not know any professionals in my area who use them - they all use Godox if there are younger and maybe Elinchrom if there are a bit older. For Daniel, Jinbei is a major competitor to Godox in China but less known elsewhere. I find their individual lights better made to Godox but they lack a well integrated range of lights.

I shyly started with 2 speedlights (Godox TT600)to learn flash photography at the beginning, then bought 3 Strobes (all Godox MS300) Then also bought a hybrid ( strobe/continuous) Godox FV150 light and also 2 more continuous lights (Godox SL60W & Godox VL300) All for about 1,250$ ( some new, some second hand)and I'm covering all my personal needs in lighting so far, shooting mostly products and some portraits. Of course I also got a bunch of stands and modifiers to go with that although I'm still missing a larger softbox (48-60") to complete my personal needs set. The reason I purchased Godox waa mainly for budget reasons and stayed all in the same family for compatibility reasons and must say so far quite content with the product I chose.

Oh wow, great video Daniel Norton! Nice to see how you broke down what a basic very versatile studio set should include. This will give someone thinking about doing this a great layout to go by, and you are right if one chooses to go with a big brand it will be more because the cost of the light units. I will add a 4X8 high gloss white Formica sheet for the floor, in order not to go through the paper background too quickly. Thank you Sir for always providing good advice and perspective, it sure helps a lot!

Photoflex three section crossbars are ok. Too bad da-lite doesn’t make them anymore. You would save money by picking one of the bajillion different lines of godox AC strobes instead of the battery powered lights. Personally I’ve set myself up with the two lowest tiers. The MS200/300 and the SK400II. I’ve always seen 400ws as the sort of general purpose ws range. I also have those strip boxes and I could swear they came with a grid. For someone without a fixed studio space, the importance of easy assemble soft boxes cannot be overstated. Also… don’t forget umbrellas…in e-commerce type hi key setups where you want light to go everywhere, umbrellas shine. (Pun intended)

The Godox SK and DP lines are good choices for inexpensive studio lighting. Jenbei is the OEM for inexpensive Adorama and Westcott lighting..Batteries are not needed indoors. I have two different friends who each have the Neewer $199 300-watt battery-powered strobe, they both have had theirs for over 5 years each. Still going strong.

This seemed to be a "lower half quality" setup that more people can afford. Great that you provided that setup to your audience. I am European / German and I often ask myself how those (obviously) high end chimera softboxes that you use affect the quality of light compared to a cheaper version. I've read so many different statements on that topic that I would really like to have an educated opinion from someone who is capable to test this. You can hardly get chimera over here in Germany - DedoWeigertFilm has just stopped importing the brand due to lack of demand. But if they make a visible difference I would try to get one. So, a comparison between let's say Chimera, Profoto, Westcott, SmallRig, Flashpoint, Godox... would be great 😉

I have standardized on Profoto with a deep parabola from Westcott and some cheap Chinese thing that folds like an umbrella and is like a beauty dish. First you pay for the brand. Second the difference in cloth they use is huge. Part of the higher price I pay for Profoto is in that. What is rally important to know is that most softboxes generate the same light circle at 2 or 3 meter distance. Irrespective of shape. What differs is the quality of light. Some of the softboxes are not particularly heat resistant and cannot be used with constant light. Some have cheap matte white internal lining, others textured silver Then there is the inner diffuser, the outer and both. As a Profoto flash head has a recessed into a reflector flash tube, the head's light beam is rather focused. Put such a head into a softbox without diffuser and from some distance photograph into it. The flash from the strobe may not hit the walls of the reflector. The same softbox will give a different light quality when you put a strobe in it with an exposed flash tune (broncolor, some God Ox models). The Profotos look sturdy and well made, but the baleens are a weak point. At some point the thin rod may come loose from the thicker end on one side and at that moment it is good to have some superglue or 2 component epoxy for metal-metal connections But you can buy spare parts for several Profoto softboxes and that is fine. What you need to keep in mind is that it helps to stick with one brand or you might end up with tint differences. Also, when you buy into strobes/speedlights, there are a few parameters to have at hand in comparisons. Folk talk about Watt.seconds (W.s=Ws=J - the miniature version of kWh) and forget that the number indicates electrical energy consumption in one full power flash while it says nothing bout the mount of light popping out. We can compare light output by looking at the guide number but this again may not be straightforward. ISO 100, a flash angle to cover the frame of a 35mm wide angle lens, and then the f/number needed to correctly expose at 2m distance. Imagine the correct exposure with all this is with f/16 and this then makes the guide numbers (the meter version) 2m*16=32m. God Ox may specify the guide number with the angle of a 120mm or 200mm lens as a way to get an unrealistically high guide number. So false. The best speedlights from God Ox (Holy Cow) are not so surprising - about 50 Ws. Top models from Nikon and Canon about 75 Ws (0.5 EV more). My experience with the Profoto 3'*4' (90*120) softbox is that I can shoot most cases in the studio with one speedlight in it (I have a dozen Nikon SB-910 with optional SD-9 battery pack) but for speedy recycling I put two of these into that softbox. And a single on in a 1'*4' (30*120). The speedlights can carry colour filters, a snoot, etc. as separate lights or in softboxes. I started to build my setup as mobile as possible when monoheads were not as common as today. The biggest pain in the anatomy is recharging 144 AA batteries. That does not work with classical "blind" charge devices so I had to invest into chargers that are processor controlled and display status per battery with 16 at a time. A mono-head with lithium battery will be a lot easier. What I miss the most from the old professional studio days when we used a big generator and control pack with several heads connected? The proportional modelling light. That meant each head's modelling light was proportional to the flash setting of that head, and the pack managed proportionality between the heads. In short, we could see what we were doing already before the flash - mid 1970s. So, my kit is expensive. Very important with flash heads, strobes, speedlights is their consistency in two qualities: (1) colour temperature when flash levels vary, (2) flash duration. Last time I looked at the full power flash duration of cheap Chinese was 1/200 sec. That may have become better in the past two years. You can do a lot with cheap umbrellas, but it boils down to how much control you get over your light and shadows - chiaroscuro. If you want to experiment a bit, buy a couple umbrellas and cheap speedlights and write them off as learning money in 0.5 to 2 years.

Thanks for another great video! You jokingly (or not?) referred to the Godox AD200Pro as an "electric razor." Is this because it is only 200 Watts and too small for fashion photography? Or do you have another reason for not liking them? I've been looking at them to step up from my speedlights. I'm learning portrait photography to hopefully finance my wildlife and fine art composite photography. My "studio" is a 10'x12' spare bedroom and I like the size and portability of the AD200Pros.

Daniel, I think that you have done a good job of explaining what you selected but I don’t think that you have indicated why you chose certain items. I think that the kits for the lights made a lot of sense and I think that the v flats are necessary but what about using two large 6 color reflectors in their place the 2 meter by 1.5 meter reflectors can be tied together or hinged with Velcro. They hold up well and offer white reflector, silver reflector, gold reflector, soft silver reflector, black flag and white diffuser panels for about $90 per two reflectors. Also, am wondering if you think the small Octadomes are a good substitute for a beauty dish? I think that the idea of buying new GODOX is a great idea for how to get started at the low cost end. I also think that you can do it with some of the older higher grade professional Monolights like Photogenic DR 2500 and 1250s for a bit less. Lots of ways to skin this cat and I would love to see you do something like this for some of the newer LED lights.

It took a while to build my kit. I do pet portraiture. I invested into Interfit which apparently is going out of business. So I'm stuck with a dud for lights. I managed to save up for Flashpoint Xplor 400 lights. I already have Flashpoint speedlights with the remote so I didn't have to purchase the remote. Those speedlights and the Xplor 400s are going to have to do for now. It stinks that Interfit has just abandoned their customers but nothing I can do about it but move on as best I can. You can get a Savage backdrop stand kit with a roll of their white paper. I believe that may be more economical than the polls and hardware you have listed.
