I love your wooden boats. I've built a couple plywood skiffs and a strip plank canoe so I get why someone wants to build rather than buy a boat. My current project is refurbishing a 1970 Oday Mariner 19. One change I'll definitely make is adding a tabernacle to help me get the 24' mast up easier by myself. I'm 70 and currently building my third house single handed so I've little time to tinker with boats these days.

Hi Paul, Yours is a great channel to watch as we chill through the UK winter. Please can you share the approximate sizes of your anchor buddy? Silicone tube can be expensive here, so I would like to base a purchase on trial and error. I guess that's some sort of electrical cable wrap as protection. Keep making those vids for us dinghy cruisers! Thanks in advance, Peter
@SailingKateLouise
@SailingKateLouise Год назад
Hi Peter yes Silicone tube is not cheap. The anchor buddy is 12ft long stretching to they say 50 ft. It's about 12mm in diameter with a 2mm wall thickness. I couldn't find any knock off alternatives to Anchor buddy here. In Australia 12mm tube is about $30 per metre so it's cheaper to buy the original from the states at about $100 including postage and tax. cheers Paul

Here's my take: there are absolutely awesome free boats everywhere if you spend a little time. You can find a great glass hill and deck of any side you want, if you spend a bit extra time you will find a very acceptable boat with all the rigging, sails, trailer, everything that just needs mostly a lot of cleaning up to be ready to cruise for under 1500. bucks .... It's fun to go check out a bunch of old boats looking for a diamond in the rough.... To each his own but I would not own a wood boat ... Glass is almost completely maintenance free and literally last forever.
@SailingKateLouise
@SailingKateLouise Год назад
Very true and yes there are many fibreglass boats in good nick that owners no longer love and just want to get rid of. But there are also a lot of free boats, that are not free after the expense of renovating, fixing, repairing hidden problems etc. As for timber boats they often have that certain something that makes them appealing and worth the effort of revarnishing etc. that glass boats just don't have. I've had both and though glass boats do last forever but they don't have that je ne c'est quoi that I love, thanks for watching, cheers Paul
@shempdoll
@shempdoll Год назад
There are so many almost free boats on Craigslist in the states. New sails for the last 17’ boat I bought were less than $700. Trailers always need a few repairs, tires, and registration. It is so much less expensive starting with an old boat and spend time modifying and customizing. Build a custom cuddy, or sew a custom tent.
@SailingKateLouise

Thanks Mike, yes there are quite a lot of cheap boats here but not many classic looking timber boats mainly grp and I agree it's fun modifying etc. thanks for watching, cheers Paul

I have a question. Talking about building boats minus the cabin, and looking at Josh's boat afterwards, when he mentions capsizing, made me wonder... what if a boat like Kate Louise, with a cabin, goes over and the cabin fills with water? Is it possible to right it without help? Does all that water in the cabin hold it inverted?
@SailingKateLouise
@SailingKateLouise Год назад
Hi Luke , I hope not...there is built in buoyancy under the bunks and in the transom and according to the designer it will not sink...but I don't want to put it to the test. There is a bulkhead between the cockpit and the cabin which is about a foot high (like the Hartley) and that should stop any water getting into the cabin area, cheers Paul

Smart money is to buy second hand. I live in a boat-rich environment here in the PugetSound area of the US. There is a rather lage commnity of small boat enthusiasts and self builders. It's not unusual to find nicely crafted small boats for sale by owner/builder, or by third owner. Often at much lower cost than it took to build them. That said, gone are the days of DIY to save money. Everything has skyrocketed. If you are a retired doctor or engineer, that doesn't apply so much to you. Retire as a truck driver: Keep reading. Cheap, capable boats can be had, but they are NOT wooden self-built. Pretty much any run of the mill 1970's 1980's fiberglass trailer sailer can be bought for under $3000. I've owned several, a couple of them were very good designs. More expensive glass sailboats, such as the un-matched Montgomery 17, is going to run you from $3000-$5000, and they will be rough, but still as capable as a 1970's Jeep CJ-5. As to cost of ownership? I've had a couple wooden boats, and a slew of glass ones. Best advice for a wood boat off season: 1)Store it indoors, sails folding loosely with good ventilation. Have it on a cradle or a trailer that cradles it evenly. Avoid heating the place, but have a fan running gently all the time. That's for the Pacific Northwest. 2) select a sail plan that is as simple as possible, requiring as few gadgets and goodies as possible. Every time you buy something thatsays 'boat' on it, you lose. Consider cleats of self carved wood instead of stainless or bronze hardware. Small sails don't require the expensive smooth blocks for hoisting or sail mangament. Simple alternatives exsisted long before there ever was a synthetic block or tackle system. Glass boats are virtually indestructible, unless you run them onto the rocks at high speed, or they are from an area of very hot sun exposure AND subsequent rain exposure. It is not required of you to cut out and patch every point of deck rot in order toget enjoymet out of small boat cruising. Stresses that would rip apart the hardpoints on a 30 footer simply do not exist on a sailing dinghy. As long as your chain plates, and decking hardware are fairly well attached, just go sailing. So don't spend your valuable time and money putting lipstick on a pig. ...okay, ive done that, but I'm jus' sayin' Polishing the hull is always allowed. A badly oxidized fiber glass boat can be brought almost back to new shine with a couple hard days of work for almostno money. But you won't want to do it twice. Trust me.

ahhhh, you can buy a yacht far cheaper than building one. The hull is "cheap" but the sail, mast and associated rigging? My Hartley TS16 cost me $2,800. On trailer. The build? around $15,000 without trailer. Mind you. There is FAR more pleasure in building .

Some people like sailing. Some people like building. A subset of those enjoys both. I know several people that enjoy building more than sailing a boat. If you just want to get on the water and enjoy having a boat, buying second hand can be the fastest route there and often cost less than building one yourself.
